    Blow-up analysis of conformal metrics of the disk with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures

    This paper is concerned with the compactness of metrics of the disk with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures. We consider a blowing-up sequence of metrics and give a precise description of its asymptotic behavior. In particular, the metrics blow-up at a unique point on the boundary and we are able to give necessary conditions on its location. It turns out that such conditions depend locally on the Gaussian curvatures but they depend on the geodesic curvatures in a nonlocal way. This is a novelty with respect to the classical Nirenberg problem where the blow-up conditions are local, and this new aspect is driven by the boundary condition.Comment: 31 pages, 1 figur

    Se plantea en este trabajo la necesidad de concebir el constructivismo como una teoría epistemológica y didáctica válida para describir y orientar los procesos de desarrollo tanto del profesorado como del alumnado. Para ello, se describen brevemente algunas características básicas de las concepciones de los alumnos en los procesos de aprendizaje científico, de la evolución y cambio de las mismas, así como de las concepciones de los profesores en aras de una construcción significativa del conocimiento profesional. Desde esta perspectiva, se pone el énfasis en aquellos estudios que se han preocupado por analizar las concepciones de los profesores acerca de los procesos de pensamiento de los alumnos en ciencias, para finalizar con una serie de posibles implicaciones.This paper aims the peed to conceive constructivism view as an epistemological theory and suitable didactic to describe and line up the development processes for teachers and students. Some basic characteristics from the students' conceptions in the scientific learning processes are briefiy described, also the developmentand changing of these features. Similarly, the teachers' conceptions are analyzed to get a meaningful making of the professional knowledge. From this perspective, those studies that were concerned to analyze teachers' conceptions on students processes in science are emphasized. Finally, some potential implications are discussed

    El empleo de índices que consideran como criterio de ponderación la capitalización bursátil, presenta el problema de que, al sobreponderar los valores sobrevalorados e infraponderar los valores infravalorados, perjudican la rentabilidad del índice. El “Fundamental Index” (FI) trata de evitar este problema utilizando como ponderaciones parámetros más fundamentales del peso de cada empresa en la economía. En el presente trabajo se compara la rentabilidad del FI frente al IBEX—35, empleando datos de la bolsa española durante el período 1992 a 2009. Se obtiene una mayor rentabilidad del FI durante dicho período y un significativo mejor comportamiento durante los años bursátiles bajistas

    Analytical ray transfer matrix for the crystalline lens

    We present the formulation of a paraxial ray transfer or ABCD matrix for onion-type GRIN lenses. In GRIN lenses, each iso-indicial surface (IIS) can be considered a refracting optical surface. If each IIS is a shell or layer, the ABCD matrix of a GRIN lens is computed by multiplying a typically high number of translation and refraction matrices corresponding to the K layers inside the lens. Using a differential approximation for the layer thickness, this matrix product becomes a sum. The elements A, B, C, and D of the approximated GRIN ray transfer matrix can be calculated by integrating the elements of a single-layer matrix. This ABCD matrix differs from a homogeneous lens matrix in only one integration term in element C, corresponding to the GRIN contribution to the lens power. Thus the total GRIN lens power is the sum of the homogeneous lens power and the GRIN contribution, which offers a compact and simple expression for the ABDC matrix. We then apply this formulation to the crystalline lens and implement both numerical and analytical integration procedures to obtain the GRIN lens power. The analytical approximation provides an accurate solution in terms of Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Last, we compare our numerical and analytical procedures with published ABCD matrix methods in the literature, and analyze the effect of the iso-indicial surface’s conic constant (Q) and inner curvature gradient (G) on the lens power for different lens models

    Intracapsular accommodation mechanism in terms of lens curvature gradient

    The intracapsular accommodation mechanism (IAM) may be understood as an increase in the lens equivalent refractive index as the eye accommodates. Our goal was to evaluate the existence of an IAM by analysing observed changes in the inner curvature gradient of the lens. To this end, we fitted a gradient index and curvature lens model to published experimental data on external and nucleus geometry changes during accommodation. For each case analysed, we computed the refractive power and equivalent index for each accommodative state using a ray transfer matrix. All data sets showed an increase in the effective refractive index, indicating a positive IAM, which was stronger for older lenses. These results suggest a strong dependence of the lens equivalent refractive index on the inner curvature gradient

TM in PHEVs is crucial to ensure good components performance and durability in all possible climate scenarios. A drawback of accurate TM solutions is the higher electrical consumption due to the increasing number of low voltage (LV) actuators used in the cooling circuits. Hence, more complex control strategies are needed for minimizing components thermal stress and at the same time electrical consumption. In this context, NMPC arises as a powerful method for achieving multiple objectives in Multiple input- Multiple output systems. This paper proposes an NMPC for the TM of the High Voltage (HV) battery and the power electronics (PE) cooling circuit in a PHEV. It distinguishes itself from the previously NMPC reported methods in the automotive sector by the complexity of its controlled plant which is highly nonlinear and controlled by numerous variables. The implemented model of the plant, which is based on experimental data and multi- domain physical equations, has been validated using six different driving cycles logged in a real vehicle, obtaining a maximum error, in comparison with the real temperatures, of 2C. For one of the six cycles, an NMPC software-in-the loop (SIL) is presented, where the models inside the controller and for the controlled plant are the same. This simulation is compared to the finite-state machine-based strategy performed in the real vehicle. The results show that NMPC keeps the battery at healthier temperatures and in addition reduces the cooling electrical consumption by more than 5%. In terms of the objective function, an accumulated and weighted sum of the two goals, this improvement amounts 30%. Finally, the online SIL presented in this paper, suggests that the used optimizer is fast enough for a future implementation in the vehicle.Accepted versio

    Citrate and Polyvinylpyrrolidone Stabilized Silver Nanoparticles as Selective Colorimetric Sensor for Aluminum (III) Ions in Real Water Samples

    The use of silver nanoparticles stabilized with citrate and polyvinylpyrrolidone as a sensor for aluminum ions determination is proposed in this paper. These non-functionalized and specific nanoparticles provide a highly selective and sensitive detection system for aluminum in acidic solutions. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Surface plasmon band deconvolution analysis was applied to study the interaction between silver nanoparticles and aluminum ions in solution. The interaction band in the UV-visible region was used as an analytical signal for quantitation purposes. The proposed detection system offers an effective AND wide linearity range (0.1-103 nM), specificity for Al(III) in THE presence of other metallic ions in solution, as well as high sensitivity (limit of detection = 40.5 nM).     Spanish personal name variations in national and international biomedical databases: implications for information retrieval and bibliometric studies

    Objectives: The study sought to investigate how Spanish names are handled by national and international databases and to identify mistakes that can undermine the usefulness of these databases for locating and retrieving works by Spanish authors. Methods: The authors sampled 172 articles published by authors from the University of Granada Medical School between 1987 and 1996 and analyzed the variations in how each of their names was indexed in Science Citation Index (SCI), MEDLINE, and indice M6dico Espanol (IME). The number and types of variants that appeared for each author's name were recorded and compared across databases to identify inconsistencies in indexing practices. We analyzed the relationship between variability (number of variants of an author's name) and productivity (number of items the name was associated with as an author), the consequences for retrieval of information, and the most frequent indexing structures used for Spanish names. Results: The proportion of authors who appeared under more then one name was 48.1% in SCI, 50.7% in MEDLINE, and 69.0% in IME. Productivity correlated directly with variability: more than 50% of the authors listed on five to ten items appeared under more than one name in any given database, and close to 100% of the authors listed on more than ten items appeared under two or more variants. Productivity correlated inversely with retrievability: as the number of variants for a name increased, the number of items retrieved under each variant decreased. For the most highly productive authors, the number of items retrieved under each variant tended toward one. The most frequent indexing methods varied between databases. In MEDLINE and IME, names were indexed correctly as "first surname second surname, first name initial middle name initial" (if present) in 41.7% and 49.5% of the records, respectively. However, in SCI, the most frequent method was "first surname, first name initial second name initial" (48.0% of the records) and first surname and second surname run together, first name initial (18.3%). Conclusions: Retrievability on the basis of author's name was poor in all three databases. Each database uses accurate indexing methods, but these methods fail to result in consistency or coherence for specific'. entries. The likely causes of inconsistency are: (1) use by authors of variants of their names during their publication careers, (2) lack of authority control in all three databases, (3) the use of an inappropriate indexing method for Spanish names in SCI, (4) authors' inconsistent behaviors, and (5) possible editorial interventions by some journals. We offer some suggestions as to how to avert the proliferation of author name variants in the databases
