Reassertion of esteem for the hospital library's role during the covid-19 pandemic: a case study
The Móstoles University Hospital Library in Madrid, Spain, conducts a yearly survey to determine user satisfaction with its support for caring, teaching and research endeavors. In 2020 the yearly questionnaire also contained items on the new services introduced by the library to help users deal with the effects of the health crisis faced by the hospital. The results revealed that the library continued to be among staff"s most highly esteemed providers of high quality information. Librarians have been key players in a time of uncertainty, enabling healthcare professionals to find the information needed during a scenario in which decisions could not be adopted lightly. This study was funded by the Comunidad de Madrid, under the Excellence Project 202000350/001
Design and Implementation of a Test-Bench for Efficiency Measurement of Domestic Induction Heating Appliances
The operation of a domestic induction cooktop is based on the wireless energy transfer from the inductor to the pot. In such systems, the induction efficiency is defined as the ratio between the power delivered to the pot and the consumed power from the supplying converter. The non-transferred power is dissipated in the inductor, raising its temperature. Most efficiency-measuring methods are based on measuring the effective power (pot) and the total power (converter output). While the converter output power is directly measurable, the measurement of the power dissipation in the pot is usually a cause of inaccuracy. In this work, an alternative method to measure the system’s efficiency is proposed and implemented. The method is based on a pot with a reversible base to which the inductor is attached. In the standard configuration, the inductor is placed below the pot in such a way that the delivered power is used to boil water, and the power losses are dissipated to the air. When the pot base is flipped, the inductor is immersed into the water. In this case the losses in the inductor also contribute to heating up and boiling the water. The induction efficiency is calculated from the boiling rates in both configurations. A commercial inductor was tested under real working conditions with consistent results
Integrating the hospital library with patient care, teaching and research: model and Web 2.0 tools to create a social and collaborative community of clinical research in a hospital setting
Background: Research in hospital settings faces several difficulties. Information technologies and certain Web 2.0 tools may provide new models to tackle these problems, allowing for a collaborative approach and bridging the gap between clinical practice, teaching and research.
Objectives: We aim to gather a community of researchers involved in the development of a network of learning and investigation resources in a hospital setting.
Methods: A multi-disciplinary work group analysed the needs of the research community. We studied the opportunities provided by Web 2.0 tools and finally we defined the spaces that would be developed, describing their elements, members and different access levels.
Model description: WIKINVESTIGACION is a collaborative web space with the aim of integrating the management of all the hospital’s teaching and research resources. It is composed of five spaces, with different access privileges. The spaces are: Research Group Space ‘wiki for each individual research group’, Learning Resources Centre devoted to the Library, News Space, Forum and Repositories.
Conclusions: The Internet, and most notably the Web 2.0 movement, is introducing some overwhelming changes in our society. Research and teaching in the hospital setting will join this current and take advantage of these tools to socialise and improve knowledge management
Artichoke By-Products as Natural Source of Phenolic Food Ingredient
Nowadays, the transformation activity of the food industry results in the generation
of a huge amount of daily discarded vegetables wastes. One of those undervalued by-products
are produced during the post-harvesting and processing process of artichokes. In the present
research, the potential of artichokes’ bracts and stalks have been evaluated as a natural source
of phenolic compounds which could be used as bioactive food ingredients, among others. In
this study, the bioactive composition of those wastes has been evaluated using recent advances
in extraction and analytical technologies, concretely, pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) followed
by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled to electrospray time-of flight mass
spectrometry (ESI-TOF/MS) analysis. To achieve this goal, first, the extraction process was evaluated
by a comparative study using GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) solvents (mixtures of ethanol
and water) at different temperatures (40–200 ◦C). The second step was to deeply characterize the
composition of individual polyphenols by HPLC-ESI-TOF/MS in order to establish a comparison
among the different PLE conditions applied to extract the phenolic fraction. The analysis revealed
a wide variety of phenolic-composition, mainly phenolic acids and flavonoids. The results also
highlighted that high percentages of ethanol and medium-high temperatures pointed out to be
useful PLE conditions for recovering this kind of phytochemicals, which could be used in different
applications, such as functional food ingredients, cosmetics, or nutraceuticals
