Effect of ta additions on the microstructure, damping, and shape memory behaviour of prealloyed Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloys

    Get PDF
The influence of Ta additions on the microstructure and properties of Cu-Al-Ni shapememory alloys was investigated in this paper. The addition of Ta significantly affects the green and porosity densities; the minimum percentage of porosity was observed with the modified prealloyed Cu-Al-Ni-2.0wt.% Ta. The phase transformation temperatures were shifted towards the highest values after Ta was added. Based on the damping capacity results, the alloy of Cu-Al-Ni-3.0 wt.% Ta has very high internal friction with the maximum equivalent internal friction value twice as high as that of the prealloyed Cu-Al-Ni SMA. Moreover, the prealloyed Cu-Al-Ni SMAs with the addition of 2.0wt.% Ta exhibited the highest shape recovery ratio in the first cycle (i.e., 100% recovery), and when the number of cycles is increased, this ratio tends to decrease. On the other hand, the modified alloys with 1.0 and 3.0 wt.% Ta implied a linear increment in the shape recovery ratio with increasing number of cycles. Polarization tests in NaCl solution showed that the corrosion resistance of Cu-Al-Ni-Ta SMA improved with escalating Ta concentration as shown by lower corrosion current densities, higher corrosion potential, and formation of stable passive film

Influence of zinc incorporation on microstructure of hydroxyapatite to characterize the effect of pH and calcination temperatures

AbstractThis work was focused to study the existence of Zn2+ in structure, chemical composition as well as particle and crystallite size of hydroxyapatite (HAp) to characterize the effect of pH of the solution and calcination temperature. Non-stoichiometric HAp (nHAp) powders containing 4at.% zinc fraction were synthesized via solution–precipitation method. In order to characterize the effect of pH (values: 9 and 10.5) and two calcination temperatures (550 and 1000°C) on chemical composition, molecule internal bonds, particle and crystallite size of the synthesized powders, XRD, EDS, FTIR and SEM techniques were utilized. The results showed that zinc cations could be incorporated in the HAp atomic structure to form low crystalline single phase of nHAP. The pH adjustment to 10.5 caused the formation of powders with smaller particle and crystallite sizes. The results also indicated that calcination temperature up to 1000°C caused decomposition of zinc doped nHAp to β-tri calcium phosphate and tri zinc calcium phosphate phases which are used to control the speed of biodegradation

A viable caesarean scar pregnancy in a woman using a levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device

    Get PDF
__Background:__ Although the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device (LNG-IUD) is one of the most reliable methods of contraception, it is associated with an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy in case of unintended pregnancy. A rare form of ectopic pregnancy is the caesarean scar pregnancy (CSP), with a high risk of serious maternal morbidity, such as uterine rupture, massive haemorrhage and resulting infertility. This report describes the first case of a viable CSP at 13 weeks of gestation in association with the use of a LNG-IUD. __Case-presentation:__ A 36-year-old Caucasian woman was referred to our outpatient clinic because of suspicion of a CSP. The pregnancy was unintended and was diagnosed during replacement of the LNG-IUD after five years. The patient had undergone two caesarean sections in the past. Ultrasound investigation showed an intact pregnancy of approximately 13 weeks of gestation located in the uterine scar. Because of the size of the gestational sac, a laparotomy was performed under general anaesthesia using a Joel-Cohen incision. The procedure was complicated by a total blood loss of 1500 mL, mostly caused by diffuse bleeding from the placental bed. __Conclusion:__ Unintended pregnancies in women using a LNG-IUD are frequently ectopic pregnancies with a preponderance to nidate outside the fallopian tube. Therefore, early diagnosis and location of the pregnancy in women using a LNG-IUD is essential

    Get PDF
We report embolization of a bioabsorbable immediate-release patch for closure of atrial septal defect into left atrium with forward movement into and out of the mitral valve during each cardiac cycle. The dislodged device was ultimately explanted by a surgical operation and the defect was closed. We discuss causes and recommend tips to prevent such a serious potential complication. We also suggest some modifications to the device for making it more safe and effective

Background: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector borne disease predominantly found in tropical and subtropical countries, including Iran. For more than 6 decades, pentavalent antimonials have been used successfully worldwide for the treatment of leishmaniasis, but over the past few years, clinical resistance to these medications has increased. In this study, we evaluated CL patients who did not show any desirable responses to the anti-leishmanial treatment within a 10-year period (2008 to 2017). Methods: All patients from different parts of Iran suspected of having cutaneous leishmaniasis, who were referred to the laboratory of leishmaniosis in Tehran University of Medical Sciences from 2008-2017 were parasitological examined. Results: During this period, a total of 1480 suspected CL patients were referred to the laboratory of leishmaniosis. Samples from 655 patients (70.8) suspected of having CL were positive microscopically. The failure rate in patients treated with anti-leishmaniasis medications for a minimum of three complete treatment periods was 1.83 (12 cases). There was no association between the number and size of skin lesions and patient characteristics. Also, the route of drug administration had no significant effect on the number and size of lesions. Conclusion: In the present study, treatment failure was found in some confirmed CL patients treated with meglumine antimoniate. Over the past few years, it seems that had been increased in resistance to these medications. So, a review of the correct implementation of the treatment protocol and/or a combination therapy may be helpful in preventing an increase in the rate of treatment failure

    Fragile three-dimensionality in the quasi-one-dimensional cuprate PrBa_2Cu_4O_8

In this article we report on the experimental realization of dimensional crossover phenomena in the chain compound PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8 using temperature, high magnetic fields and disorder as independent tuning parameters. In purer crystals of PrBa2_2Cu4_4O8_8, a highly anisotropic three-dimensional Fermi-liquid state develops at low temperatures. This metallic state is extremely susceptible to disorder however and localization rapidly sets in. We show, through quantitative comparison of the relevant energy scales, that this metal/insulator crossover occurs precisely when the scattering rate within the chain exceeds the interchain hopping rate(s), i.e. once carriers become confined to a single conducting element.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, published at http://www.iop.org/EJ/article/1367-2630/8/9/172/njp6_9_172.htm

Drug release, cytocompatibility, bioactivity, and antibacterial activity of doxycycline loaded Mg-Ca-TiO2 composite scaffold

Mg-Ca-TiO2 (MCT) composite scaffolds loaded with different concentrations of doxycycline (DC) with a network of interconnected pores with good compressive strength (5 ± 0.1 MPa) were fabricated via space holder method for the first time. The results showed that MCT-DC scaffolds possess a porosity and pore size in the range of 65–67% and 600–800 μm respectively. The bioactivity results exhibited the apatite formation on the MCT-DC scaffold surface, indicating that DC did not obstruct the bioactivity of MCT. The MCT-DC scaffolds drug release profiles show the initial burst and sustained drug release (55–75%) and the release rate could be adjusted via altering the DC concentration. The MCT loaded with 1 and 5% DC did not indicate cytotoxic behavior against MG63 cells while further DC loading resulted in some toxicity. Antimicrobial properties of MCT-DC scaffolds against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria were examined and the results reveal oblivious inhibition zone around each MCT-DC scaffold whereas no obvious inhibition is observed around the MCT scaffold. Therefore, MCT-DC composite scaffolds with low concentration of DC could be alternative candidates for infection prevention and bone tissue engineering

Background: In order to verify the infectivity of rodents with endoparasites in Germi (Dashte-Mogan, Ardabil Province) the current study was undertaken. Methods: Using live traps, 177 rodents were trapped during 2005-2007. In field laboratory, all rodents were bled prior to autopsy, frozen at -20°C, and shipped to the School of Public Health, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. In parasitological laboratory, every rodent was dissected and its different organs were examined for the presence of any parasite. Blood thick and thin smears as well as impression smears of liver and spleen were stained with Geimsa and examined microscopically. Results: Two species of rodents were trapped; Meriones persicus (90.4%) and Microtus socialis (9.6%). The species of parasites found in M. persicus and their prevalences were as follows: Hymenolepis diminuta (38.8%), Hymenolepis nana (2.5%), Trichuris sp.(40.6), Mesocestoides larva (=tetrathyridium) (3.1%), Capillaria hepatica (6.9%), Moniliformis moniliformis (11.3%), Syphacia obvelata (2.5%), Taenia endothoracicus larva (0.6%), Physaloptera sp. (0.6%), Dentostomella translucida (0.6%), Heligmosomum mixtum (0.6%), Strobilocercus fasciolaris (0.6%),and Aspiculuris tetraptera (0.6%). The species of parasites found in M. socialis and their prevalences were as follows: H. diminuta (17.6%), Trichuris sp. (5.9%), Mesocestoides larva (5.9%), S. obvelata (11.8%), S. syphacia (11.8%), H. mixtum (17.6%), and Aspiculuris tetraptera (11.8%). There were no statistical differences between male and female for infectivity with parasites in either M. persicus or M. socialis. No blood or tissue protozoan parasite was found in any of the rodents examined. Conclusion: Among different species identified, some had zoonotic importance. Therefore, the potential health hazard of these species needs to be considered to prevent infectivity of humans

In this study, 945 Specimens of bivalve Solen dactylus were biometrically assessed from April 2007 to March 2008 in two transects of Golshahr coast in Bandar Abbas, Persian Gulf. Physical and chemical factors of water like temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, coast's sediment, diversity and abundance of phytoplankton were studied monthly during the clam sampling. The mean clam length and total weight were 67.5 plus or minus 17.13mm and 6.3 plus or minus 4.04g, respectively. The relationship between clam length-width, total weight-dry weight and clam length-dry weight were significant (r^(2) = 0.91, r^(2) = 0.83 and r^(2) = 0.86, P0.05). The maximum value of Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) in the first and second transect were 11% and 16%, respectively in January (reproductive cycle). The minimum value of GSI in both transects was zero from April to September. Gonado Condition Index (GCI) was synchronous with the GSI during the year of study. GSI and GCI showed a negative relationship with temperature and a positive relationship with dissolved oxygen

Despite the association of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) with several life-threatening diseases, relatively little is known about their clinical epidemiology in Malaysia. We characterized MSSA isolates (n=252) obtained from clinical and community (carriage) sources based on spa sequencing and multilocus sequence typing (MLST). The prevalence of several important virulence genes was determined to further define the molecular characteristics of MSSA clones circulating in Malaysia. Among the 142 clinical and 110 community-acquired MSSA isolates, 98 different spa types were identified, corresponding to 8 different spa clonal clusters (spa-CCs). In addition, MLST analysis revealed 22 sequence types (STs) with 5 singletons corresponding to 12 MLST-CCs. Interestingly, spa-CC084/085 (MLST-CC15) (p=0.038), spa-non-founder 2 (MLST-ST188) (p=0.002), and spa-CC127 (MLST-CC1) (p=0.049) were identified significantly more often among clinical isolates. spa-CC3204 (MLST-CC121) (p=0.02) and spa-CC015 (MLST-CC45) (p=0.0002) were more common among community isolates. Five dominant MLST-CCs (CC8, CC121, CC1, CC45, and CC5) having clear counterparts among the major MRSA clones were also identified in this study. While the MSSA strains are usually genetically heterogeneous, a relatively high frequency (19/7.5%) of ST188 (t189) strains was found, with 57.8% of these strains carrying the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL). Analysis of additional virulence genes showed a frequency of 36.5% and 36.9% for seg and sei and 0.8% and 6.3% for etb and tst genes, respectively. Arginine catabolic mobile element (ACME) was detected in 4 community isolates only. These represent the first isolates harbouring this gene in an Asian region. In conclusion, MSSA from the Malaysian community and their clinical counterparts are genetically diverse, but certain clones occur more often among clinical isolates than among carriage isolates and vice versa
