You, Me, and No One Else: Degree of Social Distancing and Personality Predict Psychological Wellness and Relationship Quality During the COVID-19 Pandemic (Pre-Print)

While incredibly disruptive to everyday life, the COVID-19 pandemic provides a unique opportunity to study the influence of social distancing and quarantine behaviors on mental health and relationship quality. In this study, we used a snowball sample of 519 Americans to examine whether there were relationships between personality, degree of adherence to social distancing and quarantining norms and regulations, and psychological wellness and relationship quality. We discovered several interesting patterns, some more intuitive than others. Specifically, we present evidence of several interactive effects between personality and degree of social distancing predicting psychological wellness and relationship quality with cohabitants, indicating that some people may fare better in quarantine than others. Results are discussed in terms of practical applications and may provide helpful insights to policymakers and personality psychologists alike

Functional degradable polymers by radical ring-opening copolymerization of MDO and vinyl bromobutanoate : synthesis, degradability and post-polymerization modification

The synthesis of vinyl bromobutanoate (VBr), a new vinyl acetate monomer derivative obtained by the palladium-catalyzed vinyl exchange reaction between vinyl acetate (VAc) and 4-bromobutyric acid is reported. The homopolymerization of this new monomer using the RAFT/MADIX polymerization technique leads to the formation of novel well-defined and controlled polymers containing pendent bromine functional groups able to be modified via postpolymerization modification. Furthermore, the copolymerization of vinyl bromobutanoate with 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (MDO) was also performed to deliver a range of novel functional degradable copolymers, poly(MDO-co-VBr). The copolymer composition was shown to be able to be tuned to vary the amount of ester repeat units in the polymer backbone, and hence determine the degradability, while maintaining a control of the final copolymers’ molar masses. The addition of functionalities via simple postpolymerization modifications such as azidation and the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of a PEG alkyne to an azide is also reported and proven by 1H NMR spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, and SEC analyses. These studies enable the formation of a novel class of hydrophilic functional degradable copolymers using versatile radical polymerization methods

Controlling the synthesis of degradable vinyl polymers by xanthate-mediated polymerization

The copolymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (MDO), as well as the homopolymerization of MDO in the presence of a p-methoxyphenyl xanthate chain transfer agent (CTA) is reported and comparison of the homopolymerization of MDO with other known xanthates was also investigated. In depth investigation showed loss of the xanthate functionality was a result of Z-group fragmentation leading to the formation of carbonodithioate groups, as confirmed by 13C NMR spectroscopy. The use of the xanthate with a substituted phenyl Z-group drastically reduces fragmentation through the Z-group and hence significantly increases chain-end retention during the polymerization using the RAFT/MADIX technique. Post-polymerization modification of the chain-end of poly(MDO) was achieved by in situ aminolysis and base-catalyzed Michael addition of propargyl methacrylate onto the terminal thiol to form alkyne functional poly(MDO)

Identifying Hail Signatures in Satellite Imagery from the 9-10 August 2011 Severe Weather Event

Severe thunderstorms can produce large hail that causes property damage, livestock fatalities, and crop failure. However, detailed storm surveys of hail damage conducted by the National Weather Service (NWS) are not required. Current gaps also exist between Storm Prediction Center (SPC) hail damage estimates and cropinsurance payouts. NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites can be used to support NWS damage assessments, particularly to crops during the growing season. The twoday severe weather event across western Nebraska and central Kansas during 910 August 2011 offers a case study for investigating hail damage signatures by examining changes in Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from MODIS imagery. By analyzing hail damage swaths in satellite imagery, potential economic losses due to crop damage can be quantified and further improve the estimation of weather impacts on agriculture without significantly increasing manpower requirements

Personality Assessment Through the Situational and Behavioral Features of Instagram Photos

This study explores whether photos posted on online social networks can be used to assess personality. We have demonstrated that personality is connected to human- and machine- detected situational cues, characteristics, classes, behavior, and affect displayed in Instagram photos. Observations of individual relationships between normal or dark side personality characteristics and situational features of photos give insight into the various aspects of online portrayal of oneself and the personality behind the photos

This study examined the relationship of personality, narcissism, and academic achievement to social media usage among 210 participants (35% Male, 65% Female).
