Low Carbon Resilient Development and Gender Equality in the Least Developed Countries

    Get PDF
The issue of gender equality and climate change has come to the fore in both policy and research arenas in the last decade, due to the widespread recognition that neither the impact pathways for climate change, nor the policy responses are gender-neutral. Whilst it shouldn't be assumed to always be the case, climate change can worsen existing conflicts and gender inequalities, and some strategies to address climate risks can exacerbate this if not applied with gender-sensitive principles. Gender-sensitivity is therefore a key priority for lowcarbon climate resilient planning at local, national and international levels

Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State: A Diabetic Emergency

    Get PDF
Hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS) is an acute complication associated with diabetes mellitus. HHS has been known by several other names in the past. These labels include Hyperosmolar Nonketotic Coma, Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Coma, and Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar Nonketotic Syndrome (Hackel, 2014). HHS is characterized by severe hyperglycemia, profound dehydration, and is often accompanied by altered mental status. Less than 1% of diabetes-related admissions are due to HHS, but mortality rates are estimated to be 10% to 20% (Lenahan & Holloway, 2015). HHS typically affects the older adult population, with the average age of HHS patients being 60 years (Collopy, Kivlehan, & Snyder, 2013). The patient with HHS commonly has type 2 diabetes (Pasquel & Umpierrez, 2014). Up to 40% of those affected have never been diagnosed with diabetes prior to developing HHS (Collopy et al., 2013). HHS is a medical emergency. The incidence of HHS is expected to rise in the future due to the increase in the occurrence of type 2 diabetes (Lenahan & Holloway, 2015). It is important for healthcare providers to recognize HHS in order to provide appropriate care for the patient and reduce the mortality rates associated with this diabetic complication

Identification of Multiple Phosphoinositide-Linked Receptors on Human SK-N-MC Neuroepithelioma Cells

:The biochemical and pharmacological characteristics of receptor-stimulated phosphoinositide (PPI) hydrolysis in human SK-N-MC neuroepithelioma cells have been examined. Of 11 ligands tested, the addition of four, i.e., nor-epinephrine, oxotremorine-M, endothelin-1, and ATP, each resulted in an increased release (three-to eightfold) of inositol phosphates from [ 3 H]inositol-prelabeled cells. Agonist-stimulated PPI turnover was sustained for at least 30 min and required the addition of Ca 2+ for full effect. An increased release of inositol phosphates could also be elicited by the addition of the Ca 2+ ionophore, ionomycin. All four agonists enhanced the release of radiolabeled inositol mono-and bis-phosphates, inositol 1,3,4-trisphosphate, and inositol tetra-kisphosphate. Increases in inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate were smaller and only consistently observed in the presence of norepinephrine or oxotremorine-M. Norepinephrine-stim-ulated PPI turnover was potently inhibited by prazosin, WB-4101, and 5-methylurapidil ( K 1 , < 2.5 n M ), but was relatively insensitive to chloroethylclonidine pretreatment. This pharmacological profile is consistent with the involvement of an Α 1A -receptor subtype. The presence of an M 1 muscannic cholinergic receptor is also indicated, because pirenzepine blocked oxotremorine-M-stimulated inositol phosphate release ( K 1 = 35 n M ) with a 30-fold greater potency than the M 2 -selective antagonist, AF-DX 116. Of the three endothelins tested, only the addition of endothelin-1 and endothelin-2 promoted PPI hydrolysis, whereas endothelin-3 was essentially inactive. A P 2 nucleotide receptor of broad agonist specificity is also present on these cells and activates PPI turnover in the absence of a generalized increase in plasma membrane permeability. These results indicate that SK-N-MC cells express at least four PPI-linked receptors. Because the functional coupling of three of these receptors, i.e., Α 1A -adrenergic, endothelin, and P 2 nucleotide, has not been extensively characterized previously in neural tissues, the SK-N-MC cell line may provide a useful model system for studies of these receptors and their regulation.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66097/1/j.1471-4159.1991.tb06357.x.pd

Looking into the Eyes of Temptation: The Impact of Construal Level on Relationship Commitment

    Get PDF
Individuals in committed, romantic relationships devaluate attractive alternative partners as a means of maintaining their commitment. It is less clear, however, under which conditions that people will utilize this strategy. Past research suggests that people who process their surroundings in terms of global, abstract (high-level) vs. local, concrete (low-level) features make judgments consistent with their goals. This study tested the hypothesis that committed individuals induced to higher- vs. lower-level construals will be more likely to devalue attractive others. In this study, heterosexual female participants first reported their current dating status and then completed a construal manipulation task. Subsequently, participants were presented with photographs of available, attractive vs. unattractive males and asked to rate target attractiveness on a variety of dimensions. Contrary to my hypothesis, results suggested that individuals induced to a high-level of construal rated attractive photos as more attractive irrespective of relationship status than those at a low-level. These results are interpreted as suggesting that the threat to the relationship was not powerful enough to induce a need for self-control at the high-level of construal. The Ohio State University College of Arts and Sciences Honors Undergraduate Research ScholarshipThe Ohio State University College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Undergraduate Research GrantThe Ohio State University Undergraduate Student Government Academic Enrichment GrantThe Ohio State University Student Alumni Council ScholarshipNo embarg

Homophrosyne and women in the Iliad

From its outset, the Iliad stitches women into the fabric of its story with purpose. How women relate to men is of paramount concern to the poem from the theft of Briseis in Bk. 1 to the closing laments of Bk. 24. Yet studies of men and women’s relationships have largely focused on relative positions of power or on the separation between male and female worlds. This study of male-female relationships of the Iliad takes its inspiration from Odysseus’ exhortation to Nausicaa in Odyssey 6. There the hero endorses ὁμοφροσύνη (“like-mindedness”) between a man and woman as an ideal for a successful relationship and well-maintained household. At its core, Odysseus’ recommendation calls for harmony between two people’s minds and thoughts; however, it does not provide a prescription for how that harmony may be achieved. This dissertation examines how Iliadic women interact with their men and discovers an array of relationships exhibiting what may be called a form of ὁμοφροσύνη, even amid disagreement and strain in a time of stress. In the Iliad, male-female relationships at their best are marked by a way of listening and communicating that helps to absorb or move past conflict and division, that expresses shared understanding, and that seeks out some form of resolution, even if that resolution proves ultimately impermanent. Since each pairing of characters is unique, so too is the manner in which characters attempt or express harmony with their partners. This like-mindedness (ὁμοφροσύνη), however, is not guaranteed to last, or even be present, nor does the poem give it the same compass in every pair. Sometimes we are shown a potential for ὁμοφροσύνη that does not or will not fully actualize, and sometimes we are made privy to the resonance or echoes of a past like-mindedness that is now in crisis. The chapters of this dissertation are arranged by the Iliad’s four central women. Chapter 1 discusses Hekabe’s interactions with Priam and Hector. Chapter 2 investigates Helen’s relationships with Priam, Paris, and Hector. Chapter 3 considers Andromache’s complex relationship with Hector. And Chapter 4 looks at Briseis’ relationships with Achilles and Patroclus.2020-11-07T00:00:00

Model selection and prediction of outcomes in recent onset schizophrenia patients who undergo cognitive training.

Predicting treatment outcomes in psychiatric populations remains a challenge, but is increasingly important in the pursuit of personalized medicine. Patients with schizophrenia have deficits in cognition, and targeted cognitive training (TCT) of auditory processing and working memory has been shown to improve some of these impairments; but little is known about the baseline patient characteristics predictive of cognitive improvement. Here we use a model selection and regression approach called least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) to examine predictors of cognitive improvement in response to TCT for patients with recent onset schizophrenia. Forty-three individuals with recent onset schizophrenia randomized to undergo TCT were assessed at baseline on measures of cognition, symptoms, functioning, illness duration, and demographic variables. We carried out 10-fold cross-validation of LASSO for model selection and regression. We followed up on these results using linear models for statistical inference. No individual variable was found to correlate with improvement in global cognition using a Pearson correlation approach, and a linear model including all variables was also found not to be significant. However, the LASSO model identified baseline global cognition, education, and gender in a model predictive of improvement on global cognition following TCT. These findings offer guidelines for personalized approaches to cognitive training for patients with schizophrenia
