Passive broadband full Stokes polarimeter using a Fresnel cone
Light's polarisation contains information about its source and interactions,
from distant stars to biological samples. Polarimeters can recover this
information, but reliance on birefringent or rotating optical elements limits
their wavelength range and stability. Here we present a static, single-shot
polarimeter based on a Fresnel cone - the direct spatial analogue to the
popular rotating quarter-wave plate approach. We measure the average angular
accuracy to be 2.9 (3.6) degrees for elliptical(linear) polarisation states
across the visible spectrum, with the degree of polarisation determined to
within 0.12(0.08). Our broadband full Stokes polarimeter is robust,
cost-effective, and could find applications in hyper-spectral polarimetry and

Biomanufacturing through iGEM-An International Student Competition
The foundations of synthetic biology are built on molecular biology and genetic engineering. One of the purposes of synthetic biology is to make biology easier to engineer by the creation of standardized biological parts and devices. There are a wide range of potential applications for synthetic biology and a variety of approaches to constructing parts and systems. Undergraduate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) students from around the world apply synthetic biology principles at the annual International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition to demonstrate functioning biological systems created from standardized parts. The iGEM competition will continue to add to the growing field of synthetic biology and the global bioeconomy through innovations in projects and training of STEM students.
In this study, a survey was conducted of the iGEM team participants at the 2014 competition, specifically to investigate teams that had biomanufacturing as the foundation for their projects. Teams that participated during the 2014 iGEM competition comprised of STEM undergraduate and graduate students from different geographical regions. The primary source of information for this study was from 2014 iGEM team websites.
The results of this study found that many student-led teams are able to build on the fundamentals of synthetic biology to generate a wide range of useful bioproducts. In doing so, students are training themselves for future careers in STEM and expanding the field of synthetic biology
Worth a Glance: Using Eye Movements to Investigate the Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory
Results of several investigations indicate that eye movements can reveal memory for elements of previous experience. These effects of memory on eye movement behavior can emerge very rapidly, changing the efficiency and even the nature of visual processing without appealing to verbal reports and without requiring conscious recollection. This aspect of eye movement based memory investigations is particularly useful when eye movement methods are used with special populations (e.g., young children, elderly individuals, and patients with severe amnesia), and also permits use of comparable paradigms in animals and humans, helping to bridge different memory literatures and permitting cross-species generalizations. Unique characteristics of eye movement methods have produced findings that challenge long-held views about the nature of memory, its organization in the brain, and its failures in special populations. Recently, eye movement methods have been successfully combined with neuroimaging techniques such as fMRI, single-unit recording, and magnetoencephalography, permitting more sophisticated investigations of memory. Ultimately, combined use of eye-tracking with neuropsychological and neuroimaging methods promises to provide a more comprehensive account of brain–behavior relationships and adheres to the “converging evidence” approach to cognitive neuroscience

Risk for Suicide Attempts Assessed Using the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 Modified for Teens
Importance: Suicide is a leading cause of death in US youths. Objective: To assess whether screening with supplemental items 10 to 13 on the Patient Health Questionnaire–9 modified for teens (PHQ-9M) improves prediction of youth suicide attempts beyond the information provided by the first 9 items alone (the PHQ-9). Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective cohort study used a retrospective cohort of adolescents aged 12 to 17 years who were screened for depression in outpatient facilities within a pediatric health care system between January 1, 2016, and December 31, 2022, with up to 1 year of follow-up to assess the occurrence of suicidal behavior. Follow-up was completed on December 31, 2023. Exposure: Screening with the PHQ-9M. Main Outcomes and Measures: This study developed and compared prediction using 3 Cox proportional hazards regression models (CR-9, CR-13, and CR-3) of subsequent suicide attempts, determined by the hospital’s electronic health records up to 1 year following the last PHQ-9M screening. The CR-9 model used the PHQ-9 and the CR-13 model used all 13 items of PHQ-9M. The CR-3 model used the 3 most impactful variables selected from the 13 PHQ-9M items and PHQ-9 total score. All models were evaluated across 4 prediction horizons (30, 90, 180, and 365 days) following PHQ-9M screenings. Evaluation metrics were the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and the area under the precision recall curve (AUPRC). Results: Of 130 028 outpatients (65 520 [50.4%] male) with 272 402 PHQ-9M screenings, 549 (0.4%) had subsequent suicide attempts within 1 year following the PHQ-9M screening. The AUROC of the CR-9 model in the 365-day horizon was 0.77 (95% CI, 0.75-0.79); of the CR-13 model, 0.80 (95% CI, 0.78-0.82); and of the CR-3 model, 0.79 (95% CI, 0.76-0.81); the AUPRC of the CR-9 model was 0.02 (95% CI, 0.02-0.03); of the CR-13 model, 0.03 (95% CI, 0.02-0.03); and of the CR-3 model, 0.02 (95% CI, 0.02-0.03). The 3 most impactful items using adjusted hazard ratios were supplemental item 13 (lifetime suicide attempts; 3.06 [95% CI, 2.47-3.80]), supplemental item 10 (depressed mood severity in the past year; 2.99 [95% CI, 2.32-3.86]), and supplemental item 12 (serious suicidal ideation in the past month; 1.63 [95% CI, 1.25-2.12]). All of the models achieved higher AUROCs as prediction horizons shortened. Conclusions and Relevance: In this cohort study of adolescent PHQ-9M screenings, the supplemental items on PHQ-9M screening improved prediction of youth suicide attempts compared with screening using the PHQ-9 across all prediction horizons, suggesting that PHQ-9M screening should be considered during outpatient visits to improve prediction of suicide attempts.</p
Pediatric functional magnetic resonance neuroimaging: tactics for encouraging task compliance
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Neuroimaging technology has afforded advances in our understanding of normal and pathological brain function and development in children and adolescents. However, noncompliance involving the inability to remain in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to complete tasks is one common and significant problem. Task noncompliance is an especially significant problem in pediatric functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) research because increases in noncompliance produces a greater risk that a study sample will not be representative of the study population.</p> <p>Method</p> <p>In this preliminary investigation, we describe the development and application of an approach for increasing the number of fMRI tasks children complete during neuroimaging. Twenty-eight healthy children ages 9-13 years participated. Generalization of the approach was examined in additional fMRI and event-related potential investigations with children at risk for depression, children with anxiety and children with depression (N = 120). Essential features of the approach include a preference assessment for identifying multiple individualized rewards, increasing reinforcement rates during imaging by pairing tasks with chosen rewards and presenting a visual 'road map' listing tasks, rewards and current progress.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our results showing a higher percentage of fMRI task completion by healthy children provides proof of concept data for the recommended tactics. Additional support was provided by results showing our approach generalized to several additional fMRI and event-related potential investigations and clinical populations.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>We proposed that some forms of task noncompliance may emerge from less than optimal reward protocols. While our findings may not directly support the effectiveness of the multiple reward compliance protocol, increased attention to how rewards are selected and delivered may aid cooperation with completing fMRI tasks</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The proposed approach contributes to the pediatric neuroimaging literature by providing a useful way to conceptualize and measure task noncompliance and by providing simple cost effective tactics for improving the effectiveness of common reward-based protocols.</p
Preliminary results of a feasibility study of the use of information technology for identification of suspected colorectal cancer in primary care: the CREDIBLE study

Available from Cancer Research UK/Nature Publishing Group via the DOI in this record.BACKGROUND: We report the findings of a feasibility study using information technology to search electronic primary care records and to identify patients with possible colorectal cancer. METHODS: An algorithm to flag up patients meeting National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) urgent referral criteria for suspected colorectal cancer was developed and incorporated into clinical audit software. This periodically flagged up such patients aged 60 to 79 years. General practitioners (GPs) reviewed flagged-up patients and decided on further clinical management. We report the numbers of patients identified and the numbers that GPs judged to need further review, investigations or referral to secondary care and the final diagnoses. RESULTS: Between January 2012 and March 2014, 19,580 records of patients aged 60 to 79 years were searched in 20 UK general practices, flagging up 809 patients who met urgent referral criteria. The majority of the patients had microcytic anaemia (236 (29%)) or rectal bleeding (205 (25%)). A total of 274 (34%) patients needed further clinical review of their records; 199 (73%) of these were invited for GP consultation, and 116 attended, of whom 42 were referred to secondary care. Colon cancer was diagnosed in 10 out of 809 (1.2%) flagged-up patients and polyps in a further 28 out of 809 (3.5%). CONCLUSIONS: It is technically possible to identify patients with colorectal cancer by searching electronic patient records.We acknowledge the General Practitioners, practice nurses, practice managers and administrative staff who supported this study, our trial co-ordinator Marie Crook, Anthony Ingold who was one of our patient representatives and MSDi for their support in developing the software algorithm. Analytic Shielding Optimization to Reduce Crew Exposure to Ionizing Radiation Inside Space Vehicles
A sustainable lunar architecture provides capabilities for leveraging out-of-service components for alternate uses. Discarded architecture elements may be used to provide ionizing radiation shielding to the crew habitat in case of a Solar Particle Event. The specific location relative to the vehicle where the additional shielding mass is placed, as corroborated with particularities of the vehicle design, has a large influence on protection gain. This effect is caused by the exponential- like decrease of radiation exposure with shielding mass thickness, which in turn determines that the most benefit from a given amount of shielding mass is obtained by placing it so that it preferentially augments protection in under-shielded areas of the vehicle exposed to the radiation environment. A novel analytic technique to derive an optimal shielding configuration was developed by Lockheed Martin during Design Analysis Cycle 3 (DAC-3) of the Orion Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV). [1] Based on a detailed Computer Aided Design (CAD) model of the vehicle including a specific crew positioning scenario, a set of under-shielded vehicle regions can be identified as candidates for placement of additional shielding. Analytic tools are available to allow capturing an idealized supplemental shielding distribution in the CAD environment, which in turn is used as a reference for deriving a realistic shielding configuration from available vehicle components. While the analysis referenced in this communication applies particularly to the Orion vehicle, the general method can be applied to a large range of space exploration vehicles, including but not limited to lunar and Mars architecture components. In addition, the method can be immediately applied for optimization of radiation shielding provided to sensitive electronic components
Parsing cyclothymic disorder and other specified bipolar spectrum disorders in youth

Objective: Most studies of pediatric bipolar disorder (BP) combine youth who have manic symptoms, but do not meet criteria for BP I/II, into one “not otherwise specified” (NOS) group. Consequently, little is known about how youth with cyclothymic disorder (CycD) differ from youth with BP NOS. The objective of this study was to determine whether youth with a research diagnosis of CycD (RDCyc) differ from youth with operationalized BP NOS. Method: Participants from the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth study were evaluated to determine whether they met RDCyc criteria. Characteristics of RDCyc youth and BP NOS youth were compared at baseline, and over eight-years follow-up. Results: Of 154 youth (average age 11.96 (3.3), 42% female), 29 met RDCyc criteria. RDCyc youth were younger (p =.04) at baseline. Over follow-up, RDCyc youth were more likely to have a disruptive behavior disorder (p =.01), and were more likely to experience irritability (p =.03), mood reactivity (p =.02), and rejection sensitivity (p =.03). BP NOS youth were more likely to develop hypomania (p =.02), or depression (p =.02), and tended to have mood episodes earlier in the eight-year follow-up period. Limitations: RDCyc diagnoses were made retrospectively and followed stringent criteria, which may highlight differences that, under typical clinical conditions and more vague criteria, would not be evident. Conclusion: There were few differences between RDCyc and BP NOS youth. However, the ways in which the groups diverged could have implications; chronic subsyndromal mood symptoms may portend a severe, but ultimately non-bipolar, course. Longer follow-up is necessary to determine the trajectory and outcomes of CycD symptoms
Effects of comorbid anxiety disorders on the longitudinal course of pediatric bipolar disorders
OBJECTIVE: To examine the longitudinal effects of comorbid anxiety disorders in youth with bipolar spectrum disorder (BP). METHOD: As part of the Course and Outcome of Bipolar Youth study, 413 youth, who were 7 through 17 years or age and who met criteria for DSM-IV BP-I (n = 244), BP-II (n = 28), and operationally defined bipolar disorder not otherwise specified (BP-NOS) (n = 141) were included. Subjects were followed on average 5 years using the Longitudinal Interval Follow-up Evaluation. Effects of anxiety on the time to mood recovery and recurrence and percentage of time with syndromal and subsyndromal mood symptomatology during the follow-up period were analyzed. RESULTS: At intake and during the follow-up, 62% of youth with BP met criteria for at least 1 anxiety disorder. About 50% of the BP youth with anxiety had ≥2 anxiety disorders. Compared to BP youth without anxiety, those with anxiety had significantly more depressive recurrences and significantly longer median time to recovery. The effects of anxiety on recovery disappeared when the severity of depression at intake was taken into account. After adjusting for confounding factors, BP youth with anxiety, particularly those with ≥2 anxiety disorders, spent significantly less follow-up time asymptomatic and more time with syndromal mixed/cycling and subsyndromal depressive symptomatology compared to those without anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: Anxiety disorders are common and adversely affect the course of BP in youth, as characterized by more mood recurrences, longer time to recovery, less time euthymic, and more time in mixed/cycling and depressive episodes. Prompt recognition and the development of treatments for BP youth with anxiety are warranted
Standard‐space atlas of the viscoelastic properties of the human brain
Standard anatomical atlases are common in neuroimaging because they facilitate data analyses and comparisons across subjects and studies. The purpose of this study was to develop a standardized human brain atlas based on the physical mechanical properties (i.e., tissue viscoelasticity) of brain tissue using magnetic resonance elastography (MRE). MRE is a phase contrast-based MRI method that quantifies tissue viscoelasticity noninvasively and in vivo thus providing a macroscopic representation of the microstructural constituents of soft biological tissue. The development of standardized brain MRE atlases are therefore beneficial for comparing neural tissue integrity across populations. Data from a large number of healthy, young adults from multiple studies collected using common MRE acquisition and analysis protocols were assembled (N = 134; 78F/ 56 M; 18–35 years). Nonlinear image registration methods were applied to normalize viscoelastic property maps (shear stiffness, μ, and damping ratio, ξ) to the MNI152 standard structural template within the spatial coordinates of the ICBM-152. We find that average MRE brain templates contain emerging and symmetrized anatomical detail. Leveraging the substantial amount of data assembled, we illustrate that subcortical gray matter structures, white matter tracts, and regions of the cerebral cortex exhibit differing mechanical characteristics. Moreover, we report sex differences in viscoelasticity for specific neuroanatomical structures, which has implications for understanding patterns of individual differences in health and disease. These atlases provide reference values for clinical investigations as well as novel biophysical signatures of neuroanatomy. The templates are made openly available (github.com/mechneurolab/mre134) to foster collaboration across research institutions and to support robust cross-center comparisons
