Comparison of data on Mutation Frequencies of Mice Caused by Radiation - Low Dose Model -
We propose LD(Low Dose) model, the extension of LDM model which was proposed
in the previous paper [Y. Manabe et al.: J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 81 (2012) 104004]
to estimate biological damage caused by irradiation. LD model takes account of
all the considerable effects including cell death effect as well as
proliferation, apoptosis, repair. As a typical example of estimation, we apply
LD model to the experiment of mutation frequency on the responses induced by
the exposure to low levels of ionizing radiation. The most famous and extensive
experiments are those summarized by Russell and Kelly [Russell, W. L. & Kelly,
E. M: Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 79 (1982) 539-541], which are known as
'Mega-mouse project'. This provides us with important information of the
frequencies of transmitted specific-locus mutations induced in mouse
spermatogonia stem-cells. It is found that the numerical results of the
mutation frequency of mice are in reasonable agreement with the experimental
data: the LD model reproduces the total dose and dose rate dependence of data
reasonably. In order to see such dose-rate dependence more explicitly, we
introduce the dose-rate effectiveness factor (DREF). This represents a sort of
preventable effects such as repair, apoptosis and death of broken cells, which
are to be competitive with proliferation effect of broken cells induced by
irradiation.Comment: subimitting to J. Phys. Soc. Jpn, 32 pages, 8 figure
Turbine vane coolant flow variations and calculated effects on metal temperatures
Seventy-two air-cooled turbine vanes were tested to determine coolant flow variations among the vanes. Calculations were made to estimate the effect of measured coolant flow variations on local vane metal temperatures. The calculations were based on the following assumed operating conditions: turbine inlet temperature, 1700 K (2600 F); turbine inlet pressure, 31 N/sq cm (45 psia); coolant inlet temperature, 811 K (1000 F); and total coolant to gas flow ratio, 0.065. Variations of total coolant flow were not large (about 10 percent from the arithmetic mean) for all 72 vanes, but variations in local coolant flows were large. The local coolant flow variations ranged from 8 to 75 percent, and calculated metal temperature variations ranged from 8 to 60 K (15 to 180 F)
Soliton blue-shift in tapered photonic crystal fiber
We show that solitons undergo a strong blue shift in fibers with a dispersion
landscape that varies along the direction of propagation. The experiments are
based on a small-core photonic crystal fiber, tapered to have a core diameter
that varies continuously along its length, resulting in a zero-dispersion
wavelength that moves from 731 nm to 640 nm over the transition. The central
wavelength of a soliton translates over 400 nm towards shorter wavelength. This
accompanied by strong emission of radiation into the UV and IR spectral region.
The experimental results are confirmed by numerical simulation.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure
Transition radiation by matter-wave solitons in optical lattices
We demonstrate that matter-wave solitary pulses formed from Bose condensed
atoms moving inside optical lattices continuously radiate dispersive matter
waves with prescribed momentum. Our analytical results for the radiation
parameters and the soliton decay rate are found to be in excellent agreement
with numerical modelling performed for experimentally relevant parameters.Comment: accepted to PR
Symptomatic adrenal insufficiency during inhaled corticosteroid treatment
Symptomatic adrenal insufficiency, presenting
as hypoglycaemia or poor weight
gain, may occur on withdrawal of corticosteroid
treatment but has not previously
been reported during inhaled corticosteroid
treatment. This case series illustrates
the occurence of clinically
significant adrenal insufficiency in asthmatic
children while patients were on
inhaled corticosteroid treatment and the
unexpected modes of presentation. General
practitioners and paediatricians need
to be aware that this unusual but acute
serious complication may occur in patients
treated
Semi-Classical Description of Antiproton Capture on Atomic Helium
A semi-classical, many-body atomic model incorporating a momentum-dependent
Heisenberg core to stabilize atomic electrons is used to study antiproton
capture on Helium. Details of the antiproton collisions leading to eventual
capture are presented, including the energy and angular momentum states of
incident antiprotons which result in capture via single or double electron
ionization, i.e. into [He or He], and the
distribution of energy and angular momentum states following the Auger cascade.
These final states are discussed in light of recently reported, anomalously
long-lived antiproton states observed in liquid He.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures may be obtained from authors, Revte
SAM-2 ground-truth plan: Correlative measurements for the Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement-2 (SAM 2) sensor on the Nimbus G satellite
The SAM-2 will fly aboard the Nimbus-G satellite for launch in the fall of 1978 and measure stratospheric vertical profiles of aerosol extinction in high latitude bands. The plan gives details of the location and times for the simultaneous satellite/correlative measurements for the nominal launch time, the rationale and choice of the correlative sensors, their characteristics and expected accuracies, and the conversion of their data to extinction profiles. The SAM-2 expected instrument performance and data inversion results are presented. Various atmospheric models representative of polar stratospheric aerosols are used in the SAM-2 and correlative sensor analyses
The color of smiling: computational synaesthesia of facial expressions
This note gives a preliminary account of the transcoding or rechanneling
problem between different stimuli as it is of interest for the natural
interaction or affective computing fields. By the consideration of a simple
example, namely the color response of an affective lamp to a sensed facial
expression, we frame the problem within an information- theoretic perspective.
A full justification in terms of the Information Bottleneck principle promotes
a latent affective space, hitherto surmised as an appealing and intuitive
solution, as a suitable mediator between the different stimuli.Comment: Submitted to: 18th International Conference on Image Analysis and

Elemental composition and oxidation of chamber organic aerosol
Recently, graphical representations of aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) spectra and elemental composition have been developed to explain the oxidative and aging processes of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). It has been shown previously that oxygenated organic aerosol (OOA) components from ambient and laboratory data fall within a triangular region in the f_(44) vs. f_(43) space, where f_(44) and f_(43) are the ratios of the organic signal at m/z 44 and 43 to the total organic signal in AMS spectra, respectively; we refer to this graphical representation as the "triangle plot." Alternatively, the Van Krevelen diagram has been used to describe the evolution of functional groups in SOA. In this study we investigate the variability of SOA formed in chamber experiments from twelve different precursors in both "triangle plot" and Van Krevelen domains. Spectral and elemental data from the high-resolution Aerodyne aerosol mass spectrometer are compared to offline species identification analysis and FTIR filter analysis to better understand the changes in functional and elemental composition inherent in SOA formation and aging. We find that SOA formed under high- and low-NO_x conditions occupy similar areas in the "triangle plot" and Van Krevelen diagram and that SOA generated from already oxidized precursors allows for the exploration of areas higher on the "triangle plot" not easily accessible with non-oxidized precursors. As SOA ages, it migrates toward the top of the triangle along a path largely dependent on the precursor identity, which suggests increasing organic acid content and decreasing mass spectral variability. The most oxidized SOA come from the photooxidation of methoxyphenol precursors which yielded SOA O/C ratios near unity. α-pinene ozonolysis and naphthalene photooxidation SOA systems have had the highest degree of mass closure in previous chemical characterization studies and also show the best agreement between AMS elemental composition measurements and elemental composition of identified species within the uncertainty of the AMS elemental analysis. In general, compared to their respective unsaturated SOA precursors, the elemental composition of chamber SOA follows a slope shallower than −1 on the Van Krevelen diagram, which is indicative of oxidation of the precursor without substantial losss of hydrogen, likely due to the unsaturated nature of the precursors. From the spectra of SOA studied here, we are able to reproduce the triangular region originally constructed with ambient OOA compents with chamber aerosol showing that SOA becomes more chemically similar as it ages. Ambient data in the middle of the triangle represent the ensemble average of many different SOA precursors, ages, and oxidative processes
A smooth cascade of wrinkles at the edge of a floating elastic film
The mechanism by which a patterned state accommodates the breaking of
translational symmetry by a phase boundary or a sample wall has been addressed
in the context of Landau branching in type-I superconductors, refinement of
magnetic domains, and compressed elastic sheets. We explore this issue by
studying an ultrathin polymer sheet floating on the surface of a fluid,
decorated with a pattern of parallel wrinkles. At the edge of the sheet, this
corrugated profile meets the fluid meniscus. Rather than branching of wrinkles
into generations of ever-smaller sharp folds, we discover a smooth cascade in
which the coarse pattern in the bulk is matched to fine structure at the edge
by the continuous introduction of discrete, higher wavenumber Fourier modes.
The observed multiscale morphology is controlled by a dimensionless parameter
that quantifies the relative strength of the edge forces and the rigidity of
the bulk pattern.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
