Phonon-assisted radiofrequency absorption by gold nanoparticles resulting in hyperthermia
It is suggested that in gold nanoparticles (GNPs) of about 5 nm sizes used in
the radiofrequency (RF) hyperthermia, an absorption of the RF photon by the
Fermi electron occurs with involvement of the longitudinal acoustic vibrational
mode (LAVM), the dominating one in the distribution of vibrational density of
states (VDOS). This physical mechanism helps to explain two observed phenomena:
the size dependence of the heating rate (HR) in GNPs and reduced heat
production in aggregated GNPs. The argumentation proceeds within the
one-electron approximation, taking into account the discretenesses of energies
and momenta of both electrons and LAVMs. The heating of GNPs is thought to
consist of two consecutive processes: first, the Fermi electron absorbs
simultaneously the RF photon and the LAVM available in the GNP; hereafter the
excited electron gets relaxed within the GNP's boundary, exciting a LAVM with
the energy higher than that of the previously absorbed LAVM. GNPs containing
the Ta and/or Fe impurities are proposed for the RF hyperthermia as promising
heaters with enhanced HRs, and GNPs with rare-earth impurity atoms are also
brought into consideration. It is shown why the maximum HR values should be

Body shape variation and colour change during growth in a protogynous fish
Protogynous sequential hermaphroditism is very common in marine fish. Despite a large number of studies on various aspects of sequential hermaphroditism in fish, the relationship between body shape and colour during growth in dichromatic species has not been assessed. Using geometric morphometrics, the present study explores the relationship between growth, body shape and colouration in Coris julis (L. 1758), a small protogynous labrid species with distinct colour phases. Results show that body shape change during growth is independent of change in colour phase, a result which can be explained by the biology of the species and by the social control of sex change. Also, during growth the body grows deeper and the head has a steeper profile. It is hypothesized that a deeper body and a steeper profile might have a function in agonistic interactions between terminal phase males and that the marked chromatic difference between colour phases allows the lack of strict interdependence of body shape and colour during growth
Stranded research? Leading finance journals are silent on climate change
Finance research has shaped the modern financial system, influencing investors and market participants directly through research findings and indirectly through teaching and training programmes. Climate change presents major risks to the global financial system as well as new opportunities for investors. Is climate finance an important topic in finance research? We systematically analyse the content of 20,725 articles published in the leading 21 finance journals between January 1998 and June 2015. We find that only 12 articles (0.06%) are related in some way to climate finance. The three elite finance journals (Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and Review of Financial Studies) did not publish a single article related to climate finance over the 17.5-year period. We repeat our analysis across a sample of 29 elite business journals spanning accounting, economics, management, marketing and operations research, as well as finance. We find a similar dearth of published climate finance research. We consider four possible explanations for this failure of top finance and business journals to engage with climate finance as a research topic. These include methodological constraints and editorial policies. We conclude by arguing why it is critical for climate-related research to be given greater attention and prominence in finance journals
Upper atmospheres and ionospheres of planets and satellites
The upper atmospheres of the planets and their satellites are more directly
exposed to sunlight and solar wind particles than the surface or the deeper
atmospheric layers. At the altitudes where the associated energy is deposited,
the atmospheres may become ionized and are referred to as ionospheres. The
details of the photon and particle interactions with the upper atmosphere
depend strongly on whether the object has anintrinsic magnetic field that may
channel the precipitating particles into the atmosphere or drive the
atmospheric gas out to space. Important implications of these interactions
include atmospheric loss over diverse timescales, photochemistry and the
formation of aerosols, which affect the evolution, composition and remote
sensing of the planets (satellites). The upper atmosphere connects the planet
(satellite) bulk composition to the near-planet (-satellite) environment.
Understanding the relevant physics and chemistry provides insight to the past
and future conditions of these objects, which is critical for understanding
their evolution. This chapter introduces the basic concepts of upper
atmospheres and ionospheres in our solar system, and discusses aspects of their
neutral and ion composition, wind dynamics and energy budget. This knowledge is
key to putting in context the observations of upper atmospheres and haze on
exoplanets, and to devise a theory that explains exoplanet demographics.Comment: Invited Revie
Diffusion and dissemination of evidence-based dietary srategies for the prevention of cancer
OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to determine what strategies have been evaluated to disseminate cancer control interventions that promote the uptake of adult healthy diet? METHODS: A systematic review was conducted. Studies were identified by searching MEDLINE, PREMEDLINE, Cancer LIT, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, PsycINFO, CINAHL, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and reference lists and by contacting technical experts. English-language primary studies were selected if they evaluated the dissemination of healthy diet interventions in individuals, healthcare providers, or institutions. Studies of children or adolescents only were excluded. RESULTS: One hundred one articles were retrieved for full text screening. Nine reports of seven distinct studies were included; four were randomized trials, one was a cohort design and three were descriptive studies. Six studies were rated as methodologically weak, and one was rated as moderate. Studies were not meta-analyzed because of heterogeneity, low methodological quality, and incomplete data reporting. No beneficial dissemination strategies were found except one that looks promising, the use of peer educators in the worksite, which led to a short-term increase in fruit and vegetable intake. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Overall, the quality of the evidence is not strong and is primarily descriptive rather than evaluative. No clear conclusions can be drawn from these data. Controlled studies are needed to evaluate dissemination strategies, and to compare dissemination and diffusion strategies with different messages and different target audiences
Restoration of european habitats in mainland, Portugal, using commercial seed mixtures. Considerations for its management and conservation
Permanent mountain pastures include meadows and other perennial pastures of high ecological,
economic, cultural and scenic value. Increasing desertification limits the maintenance and conservation
of its biodiversity and the associated landscape mosaic. A restoration experiment in permanent high
altitude grasslands in Beira Alta (Centre East (CE) mainland Portugal) was made, by sowing adequate
cultivars of existing grass and legume species. The main objectives addressed were: (1) comparison of
floristic composition between reference communities included in the previous habitats and the improved
communities; (2) evaluation of the success of sowing adequate cultivars of autochthonous species; (3)
evaluation of the establishment of target species in terms of the maintenance of floristic composition of
reference. The experiment was carried out in 2014 on nine farms situated in Beira Alta (Guarda District)
and the phytosociological method was applied in the floristic surveys. The sown species with highest
percentage of soil cover were Trifolium subterraneum, Lolium multiflorum, Ornithopus sativus and Trifolium
vesiculosum. In the priority habitat 6220 it was observed a re-establishment of many species in their
original composition and a high cover of several cultivars of Trifolium subterraneum. These results highlight

Indução da atividade fagocitária e produção de Ăłxido nĂtrico numa população natural de Trypanosoma cruzi I e II do Estado do Paraná, Brasil
Twelve strains of Trypanosoma cruzi isolated from wild reservoirs, triatomines, and chronic chagasic patients in the state of Paraná, southern Brazil, and classified as T. cruzi I and II, were used to test the correlation between genetic and biological diversity. The Phagocytic Index (PI) and nitric-oxide (NO) production in vitro were used as biological parameters. The PI of the T. cruzi I and II strains did not differ significantly, nor did the PI of the T. cruzi strains isolated from humans, triatomines, or wild reservoirs. There was a statistical difference in the inhibition of NO production between T. cruzi I and II and between parasites isolated from humans and the strains isolated from triatomines and wild reservoirs, but there was no correlation between genetics and biology when the strains were analyzed independently of the lineages or hosts from which the strains were isolated. There were significant correlations for Randomly Amplified Polymorphic Deoxyribonucleic acid (RAPD) and biological parameters for T. cruzi I and II, and for humans or wild reservoirs when the lineages or hosts were considered individually.Doze cepas de Trypanosoma cruzi isoladas de reservatĂłrios silvestres, triatomĂneos e de pacientes chagásicos crĂ´nicos do Estado do Paraná, Brasil, classificadas como Tc I e II foram usadas para avaliar a correlação entre genĂ©tica e diversidade biolĂłgica. Monitoring lactoferrin iron levels by fluorescence resonance energy transfer: A combined chemical and computational study
Three forms of lactoferrin (Lf) that differed in their levels of iron loading (Lf, LfFe, and LfFe2) were simultaneously labeled with the fluorophores AF350 and AF430. All three resulting fluorescent lactoferrins exhibited fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), but they all presented different FRET patterns. Whereas only partial FRET was observed for Lf and LfFe, practically complete FRET was seen for the holo form (LfFe2). For each form of metal-loaded lactoferrin, the AF350–AF430 distance varied depending on the protein conformation, which in turn depended on the level of iron loading. Thus, the FRET patterns of these lactoferrins were found to correlate with their iron loading levels. In order to gain greater insight into the number of fluorophores and the different FRET patterns observed (i.e., their iron levels), a computational analysis was performed. The results highlighted a number of lysines that have the greatest influence on the FRET profile. Moreover, despite the lack of an X-ray structure for any LfFe species, our study also showed that this species presents modified subdomain organization of the N-lobe, which narrows its iron-binding site. Complete domain rearrangement occurs during the LfFe to LfFe2 transition. Finally, as an example of the possible applications of the results of this study, we made use of the FRET fingerprints of these fluorescent lactoferrins to monitor the interaction of lactoferrin with a healthy bacterium, namely Bifidobacterium breve.
