Dynamics and Coalitions in Sequential Games
We consider N-player non-zero sum games played on finite trees (i.e.,
sequential games), in which the players have the right to repeatedly update
their respective strategies (for instance, to improve the outcome wrt to the
current strategy profile). This generates a dynamics in the game which may
eventually stabilise to a Nash Equilibrium (as with Kukushkin's lazy
improvement), and we argue that it is interesting to study the conditions that
guarantee such a dynamics to terminate.
We build on the works of Le Roux and Pauly who have studied extensively one
such dynamics, namely the Lazy Improvement Dynamics. We extend these works by
first defining a turn-based dynamics, proving that it terminates on subgame
perfect equilibria, and showing that several variants do not terminate. Second,
we define a variant of Kukushkin's lazy improvement where the players may now
form coalitions to change strategies. We show how properties of the players'
preferences on the outcomes affect the termination of this dynamics, and we
thereby characterise classes of games where it always terminates (in particular
two-player games).Comment: In Proceedings GandALF 2017, arXiv:1709.0176
UniVegE, Clermont Auvergne University, conducts research relating to the characterization of natural and anthropized habitats, from plant bio-indicators, for the purpose of management and conservation. Since 2005, this work has been supplemented by research and expertise relating to the diagnosis and monitoring of natural areas on permanent plots and along transects, on behalf of environmental partners: Regional nature parks, Espaces Naturels Sensibles of the departement 63, Clermont-Auvergne metropole ... In this context 51 permanent plots have been set up in natural areas of the Massif central, territories of local authorities and/or protected areas. This experience made it possible to test new monitoring methods to concretely respond to managers’ questions and lead to the development of the SurVegE software.SurVegE (SURvey VEGetation Ecology) is an assistance software for the operator who manages natural areas. It allows, from floristic surveys carried out on bounded and georeÂferenced permanent plots, to characterize the floristic and ecological changes occurring between several years. The data analysis, integrated into the software and based on the values of benchmarks assigned to plant species, directly provides the comparative results quantified and illustrated, in the form of diagrams, figures and tables. We will present here some features of the software, taking as an example concrete cases of studies carried out in the field. The sites selected correspond to different types of habitats and have been the subject of either initial reports or comparative diachronic analyses. The productivity advantages of large cities: Distinguishing agglomeration from firm selection
Firms are more productive on average in larger cities. Two explanations have been offered: agglomeration economies (larger cities promote interactions that increase productivity) and firm selection (larger cities toughen competition allowing only the most productive to survive). To distinguish between them, we nest a generalised version of a seminal firm selection model and a standard model of agglomeration. Stronger selection in larger cities left truncates the productivity distribution whereas stronger agglomeration right shifts and dilates the distribution. We assess the relative importance of agglomeration and firm selection using French establishment level data and a new quantile approach. Spatial productivity differences in France are mostly explained by agglomeration.agglomeration; firm selection; productivity; cities

Fast minimum variance wavefront reconstruction for extremely large telescopes
We present a new algorithm, FRiM (FRactal Iterative Method), aiming at the
reconstruction of the optical wavefront from measurements provided by a
wavefront sensor. As our application is adaptive optics on extremely large
telescopes, our algorithm was designed with speed and best quality in mind. The
latter is achieved thanks to a regularization which enforces prior statistics.
To solve the regularized problem, we use the conjugate gradient method which
takes advantage of the sparsity of the wavefront sensor model matrix and avoids
the storage and inversion of a huge matrix. The prior covariance matrix is
however non-sparse and we derive a fractal approximation to the Karhunen-Loeve
basis thanks to which the regularization by Kolmogorov statistics can be
computed in O(N) operations, N being the number of phase samples to estimate.
Finally, we propose an effective preconditioning which also scales as O(N) and
yields the solution in 5-10 conjugate gradient iterations for any N. The
resulting algorithm is therefore O(N). As an example, for a 128 x 128
Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor, FRiM appears to be more than 100 times faster
than the classical vector-matrix multiplication method.Comment: to appear in the Journal of the Optical Society of America
Light Emission in Silicon from Carbon Nanotubes
The use of optics in microelectronic circuits to overcome the limitation of
metallic interconnects is more and more considered as a viable solution. Among
future silicon compatible materials, carbon nanotubes are promising candidates
thanks to their ability to emit, modulate and detect light in the wavelength
range of silicon transparency. We report the first integration of carbon
nanotubes with silicon waveguides, successfully coupling their emission and
absorption properties. A complete study of this coupling between carbon
nanotubes and silicon waveguides was carried out, which led to the
demonstration of the temperature-independent emission from carbon nanotubes in
silicon at a wavelength of 1.3 {\mu}m. This represents the first milestone in
the development of photonics based on carbon nanotubes on silicon
