    Radio emission at the centre of the galaxy cluster Abell 3560: evidence for core sloshing?

    Previous radio observations of the galaxy cluster A3560 in the Shapley Concentration showed complex radio emission associated with the brightest cluster member.To understand its origin we observed it with the GMRT, the VLA and ATCA at 240 and 610 MHz, 1.28,1.4, 2.3,4.8 and 8.4 GHz, and performed a detailed morphological and spectral study of the radio emission associated with the BCG. We also observed the cluster with XMM-Newton and Chandra to derive the properties of the ICM. The radio emission of the N-E nucleus of the dumb-bell BCG shows an active radio galaxy, plus aged diffuse emission, which is not refurbished at present. Our Chandra data show that the radio active nucleus of the BCG has extended X-ray emission, which we classify as a low-luminosity corona. A residual image of the XMM-Newton brightness shows the presence of a spiral-like feature, which we interpret as the signature of gas sloshing. The presence of a subgroup is clear in the surface brightness residual map, and in the XMM-Newton temperature analysis. The optical 2D analysis shows substructure in A3560. A galaxy clump was found at the location of the X-ray subgroup, and another group is present south of the cluster core, close to the spiral-like feature. The aged part of the radio emission closely follows the spiral pattern of the X-ray residual brightness distribution, while the two active radio lobes are bent in a completely different direction. We conclude that the complex radio emission associated with the cluster BCG is the result of a minor merger event in A3560. The aged diffuse emission is strongly affected by the sloshing motion in the ICM. On the other hand, the bent jets and lobes of the current radio AGN activity may reflect a complex gas velocity field in the innermost cluster regions and/or sloshing-induced oscillations in the motion of the cD galaxy.Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables, A&A in pres

    Characterisation of Ru/C catalysts for ammonia synthesis by oxygen chemisorption

    A standard chemisorption procedure has been set up for the determination of Ru dispersion in Ru/C catalysts. Pulse chemisorption of oxygen was carried out at 0 \ub0C, after having proved that no corrosive chemisorption phenomena are present. An average chemisorption stoichiometry was experimentally determined through measurements on Ru black. The procedure was applied to the investigation of promoted and unpromoted Ru/C catalysts for ammonia synthesis, supported on two different carbon supports. The main factor influencing Ru dispersion showed to be Ru loading, while the addition of even large amounts of Ba\u2013Cs\u2013K promoters has practically no influence. It is also briefly discussed how such results can help in elucidating several aspects of the behaviour of Ru/C as catalyst for ammonia synthesis

    Graphitised carbon as support for Ru/C ammonia synthesis catalyst

    In the present work, we compared the catalytic activity and mainly the stability under the usual ammonia synthesis conditions, of some carbon supports, differing as for their nature, purity and temperature of pretreatment. The effect of catalyst composition (metal and promoters loading) on stability was also investigated. XRD and N-2 adsorption/desorption analysis helped in elucidating the effect of carbon treatment. It was found that only after the support has been heated at least at 1900 degrees C the stability of the tri-promoted catalyst becomes fully satisfactory and virtually independent of Ru loading. For practical purposes such high temperature treatment must be compatible with the preservation of a sufficiently high surface area

    Resumo: Foram utilizados 32 cordeiros, mestiços, durante setenta dias em estudo na Embrapa Caprinos, em Sobral, CE, para determinar a influência do nível de concentrado em dietas para acabamento de cordeiros em confinamento. Os tratamentos foram as seguintes relaçoes forragem:concentrado: 100%:0% (T1), 85%:15% (T2), 70%:30% (T3) e 55%:45% (T4). A forragem fornecida era feno de cunha e o concentrado era composta de 75% de milho e 25% de farelo de soja. 0 ajuste das proporçoes foi feito diariamente, corn base no consumo de volumoso, servido ad libitum. Corn o aumento do nível de concentrado na dieta dos animais, observou-se incrementos lineares (PO,05) quanto aos tratamentos. Conclui-se que todas as raçoes testadas podem ser utilizadas para terminação de cordeiros em confinamento. Cunhã hay (Clitoria ternatea L.) for finishing of lambs. ABSTRACT - Thirty two crossbred lambs were used in a 70 day study at Embrapa Caprinos, in Sobral, CE, Brazil to evaluate the influence of concentrate levels on finishing diets under confinement. The treatments were the following roughage to concentrate relations: 100% to 0% (T1), 85% to 15% (T2), 70% to 30% (T3) and 55% to 45% (T4). The roughage was cunhã hay (Clitoria ternatea L), and the concentrate was composed of corn (75%) and soybean meal (25%). The adjustments of the proportions were made daily, based on the roughage intake, served ad libitum. It was observed that the total dry matter intake increased, the forage intake decreased, the feed efficiency improved and the daily weight gain increased (P0.05) among treatments. It was concluded that any of the diets studied can be used for finishing lambs

    La-Ag-Co perovskites for the catalytic flameless combustion of methane

    Ag represents an interesting dopant for the highly active LaCoO3 perovskites used for the catalytic flameless combustion (CFC) of methane, due to its ability to adsorb and activate oxygen and to the possibility of incorporation into the framework as Ag+ or Ag2+, with formation of oxygen vacancies. In the present work we compared the catalytic activity and resistance to sulphur poisoning of a series of LaCoO3, x%Ag/LaCoO3, La1-xAgxCoO3 samples (nominal composition), the latter two notations indicating post-synthesis Ag loading or direct incorporation during the synthesis, respectively. The samples were prepared by flame pyrolysis (FP) and by the sot-gel (SG) method, leading to different particle size and possibly to different incorporation degree of the dopant, quantified by Rietveld refinement of XRD patterns. Higher activity was observed, in general, with fresh catalysts synthesised by FP. The SG samples demonstrated a slightly better resistance to sulphur poisoning when considering the conversion decrease between the fresh and the poisoned samples, due to lower surface exposure. However, interesting data have been obtained with some of the Ag-doped poisoned FP samples, performing even better than the fresh SG-prepared ones. Ag addition led to a complex change of activity and resistance to poisoning. The activity of FP-prepared samples doped with a small amount of Ag (e.g. 5 mol%) was indeed lower than that of the undoped LaCoO3. By contrast, a further increase of Ag concentration led to increasing catalytic activity, mainly when big extra framework Ag particles were present. By contrast, for SG samples a low Ag amount was beneficial for activity, due to an increased reducibility of Co3+

    Bio-ethylene Production: from Reaction Kinetics to Plant Scale

    Ethylene production from renewable bio-ethanol has been recently proposed as sustainable alternative to fossil sources. The possibility to exploit diluted bioethanol as less expensive feedstock was studied both experimentally, using different catalysts at lab-level, and through preliminary process design. In this work, a full-scale plant simulation is presented, built on a detailed reaction kinetics. Rate equations for the primary and side reactions are revised and implemented with a process simulation package, using a range of thermodynamic methods as best suited to the different process stages. The catalyst loading within the reactor can be effectively distributed according to the underlying kinetic, and the overall plant layout let foresee the best routes for the material recycles. The detailed reaction modeling and the choice of the thermodynamic models are essential to obtain reliable predictions. Setting a target yield of 105 t/year of polymer-grade ethylene, the reactive section must be fed with 76 t/h of diluted ethanol and operated at 400 \ub0C. 85% of the fed carbon mass is found as ethylene, 12% remains as ethanol and a 2% as longer olefins. Considering also the recycle of ethanol the carbon conversion and recovery increases to the value of 97.6%. The global ethylene recovery is 90.7%: most of the loss takes place in the last stage due to the non-condensable purification and to the adopted strategy of having low reflux ratio \u2013 and then a closed cryogenic balance \u2013 in the last purification column. Full heat integration of the process with upstream bioethanol production and purification sections allows process intensification and consistent energy savings. This newly designed process sets the sustainable ethylene production on a detailed and reassessed computational basis and has been assessed as for Capital and Operational Expenditures and Total Investment costs

    South-West extension of the hard X-ray emission from the Coma cluster

    We explore the morphology of hard (18-30 keV) X-ray emission from the Coma cluster of galaxies. We analyze a deep (1.1 Ms) observation of the Coma cluster with the ISGRI imager on board the \emph{INTEGRAL} satellite. We show that the source extension in the North-East to South-West (SW) direction (∼17′\sim 17') significantly exceeds the size of the point spread function of ISGRI, and that the centroid of the image of the source in the 18-30 keV band is displaced in the SW direction compared to the centroid in the 1-10 keV band. To test the nature of the SW extension we fit the data assuming different models of source morphology. The best fit is achieved with a diffuse source of elliptical shape, although an acceptable fit can be achieved assuming an additional point source SW of the cluster core. In the case of an elliptical source, the direction of extension of the source coincides with the direction toward the subcluster falling onto the Coma cluster. If the SW excess is due to the presence of a point source with a hard spectrum, we show that there is no obvious X-ray counterpart for this additional source, and that the closest X-ray source is the quasar EXO 1256+281, which is located 6.1′6.1' from the centroid of the excess. The observed morphology of the hard X-ray emission clarifies the nature of the hard X-ray "excess" emission from the Coma cluster, which is due to the presence of an extended hard X-ray source SW of the cluster core.Comment: 7pages, 10 figure

    'Pencil Beamforming Increases Human Exposure to ElectroMagnetic Fields': True or False?

    According to a very popular belief-very widespread among non-scientific communities-the exploitation of narrow beams, a.k.a. 'pencil beamforming', results in a prompt increase of exposure levels radiated by 5G Base Stations (BSs). To face such concern with a scientific approach, in this work we propose a novel localization-enhanced pencil beamforming technique, in which the traffic beams are tuned in accordance with the uncertainty localization levels of User Equipment (UE). Compared to currently deployed beamforming techniques, which generally employ beams of fixed width, we exploit the localization functionality made available by the 5G architecture to synthesize the direction and the width of each pencil beam towards each served UE. We then evaluate the effectiveness of pencil beamforming in terms of ElectroMagnetic Field (EMF) exposure and UE throughput levels over different realistic case-studies. Results, obtained from a publicly released open-source simulator, dispel the myth: the adoption of localization-enhanced pencil beamforming triggers a prompt reduction of exposure w.r.t. other alternative techniques, which include e.g., beams of fixed width and cellular coverage not exploiting beamforming. The EMF reduction is achieved not only for the UE that are served by the pencil beams, but also over the whole territory (including the locations in proximity to the 5G BS). In addition, large throughput levels-adequate for most of 5G services-can be guaranteed when each UE is individually served by one dedicated beam
