Self-intersection local time of planar Brownian motion based on a strong approximation by random walks
The main purpose of this work is to define planar self-intersection local
time by an alternative approach which is based on an almost sure pathwise
approximation of planar Brownian motion by simple, symmetric random walks. As a
result, Brownian self-intersection local time is obtained as an almost sure
limit of local averages of simple random walk self-intersection local times. An
important tool is a discrete version of the Tanaka--Rosen--Yor formula; the
continuous version of the formula is obtained as an almost sure limit of the
discrete version. The author hopes that this approach to self-intersection
local time is more transparent and elementary than other existing ones.Comment: 36 pages. A new part on renormalized self-intersection local time has

Analysing the elasticity difference tensor of general relativity
The elasticity difference tensor, used in [1] to describe elasticity
properties of a continuous medium filling a space-time, is here analysed from
the point of view of the space-time connection. Principal directions associated
with this tensor are compared with eigendirections of the material metric.
Examples concerning spherically symmetric and axially symmetric space-times are

An Experimental Investigation of Colonel Blotto Games
"This article examines behavior in the two-player, constant-sum Colonel Blotto game with asymmetric resources in which players maximize the expected number of battlefields won. The experimental results support all major theoretical predictions. In the auction treatment, where winning a battlefield is deterministic, disadvantaged players use a 'guerilla warfare' strategy which stochastically allocates zero resources to a subset of battlefields. Advantaged players employ a 'stochastic complete coverage' strategy, allocating random, but positive, resource levels across the battlefields. In the lottery treatment, where winning a battlefield is probabilistic, both players divide their resources equally across all battlefields." Volume element structure and roton-maxon-phonon excitations in superfluid helium beyond the Gross-Pitaevskii approximation
We propose a theory which deals with the structure and interactions of volume
elements in liquid helium II. The approach consists of two nested models linked
via parametric space. The short-wavelength part describes the interior
structure of the fluid element using a non-perturbative approach based on the
logarithmic wave equation; it suggests the Gaussian-like behaviour of the
element's interior density and interparticle interaction potential. The
long-wavelength part is the quantum many-body theory of such elements which
deals with their dynamics and interactions. Our approach leads to a unified
description of the phonon, maxon and roton excitations, and has noteworthy
agreement with experiment: with one essential parameter to fit we reproduce at
high accuracy not only the roton minimum but also the neighboring local maximum
as well as the sound velocity and structure factor.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Energy Contents of Some Well-Known Solutions in Teleparallel Gravity
In the context of teleparallel equivalent to General Relativity, we study
energy and its relevant quantities for some well-known black hole solutions.
For this purpose, we use the Hamiltonian approach which gives reasonable and
interesting results. We find that our results of energy exactly coincide with
several prescriptions in General Relativity. This supports the claim that
different energy-momentum prescriptions can give identical results for a given

Nuclear Skins and Halos in the Mean-Field Theory
Nuclei with large neutron-to-proton ratios have neutron skins, which manifest
themselves in an excess of neutrons at distances greater than the radius of the
proton distribution. In addition, some drip-line nuclei develop very extended
halo structures. The neutron halo is a threshold effect; it appears when the
valence neutrons occupy weakly bound orbits. In this study, nuclear skins and
halos are analyzed within the self-consistent Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov
and relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theories for spherical shapes. It is
demonstrated that skins, halos, and surface thickness can be analyzed in a
model-independent way in terms of nucleonic density form factors. Such an
analysis allows for defining a quantitative measure of the halo size. The
systematic behavior of skins, halos, and surface thickness in even-even nuclei

Is symmetry identity?
Wigner found unreasonable the "effectiveness of mathematics in the natural
sciences". But if the mathematics we use to describe nature is simply a coded
expression of our experience then its effectiveness is quite reasonable. Its
effectiveness is built into its design. We consider group theory, the logic of
symmetry. We examine the premise that symmetry is identity; that group theory
encodes our experience of identification. To decide whether group theory
describes the world in such an elemental way we catalogue the detailed
correspondence between elements of the physical world and elements of the
formalism. Providing an unequivocal match between concept and mathematical
statement completes the case. It makes effectiveness appear reasonable. The
case that symmetry is identity is a strong one but it is not complete. The
further validation required suggests that unexpected entities might be
describable by the irreducible representations of group theory
Comparison of the newer preventive therapies on remineralisation of enamel in vitro
Objectives: To investigate in vitro the effect of MI Paste, MI Paste Plus and 2800 ppm fluoride (F) toothpaste (TP) on the remineralisation of enamel subsurface lesions and to compare these to the effect of 1450 ppm and 0 ppm F toothpastes. Methods: Enamel subsurface lesions were created in bovine enamel slabs (n = 120) which were assigned randomly to five groups; (1) 0 ppm F TP, (2) 1450 ppm F TP, (3) 2800 ppm F TP, (4) 1450 ppm F TP + MI Paste (Tooth Mousse-TM,10% w/v CPP-ACP) and (5) 1450 ppm F TP + MI Paste Plus (Tooth Mousse Plus,10% w/v CPP-ACP, 900 ppm F as 0.2% w/w sodium fluoride). The enamel slabs were subjected to a pH cycling regimen for 21 days. Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence (QLF) images were taken and analysed. Data analysis was carried out using one way ANOVA. Results: In all groups, both ÎF (percentage fluorescence loss) and ÎQ (ÎF times the area) values improved significantly within the same group after the treatment. In addition, the mean difference in ÎF of the non-fluoride control group was significantly lower than all other groups but not for the 2800 ppm Fâ» group. Whereas the mean difference in ÎQ of the non-fluoride control of group was significantly lower when compared with all other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Both MI Paste and MI Paste Plus when used in conjunction with 1450 ppm F did not show a significant increase in efficacy for the remineralisation of bovine enamel subsurface lesions in the model used in this study. Clinical significance: Newer preventive agents such as MI paste and MI paste plus are advocated as promoting remineralisation when used in addition to routine oral care. This in vitro study shows that they may have a limited value in promoting remineralisation over and above that of 1450 ppm F toothpaste used twice a day
