In vitro evaluation of electrospun blends of gelatin and PCL for application as a partial thickness corneal graft
The advent of innovative surgical procedures utilizing partial thickness corneal grafts has created a need for the development of synthetic implants to recreate corneal stromal tissue. This work evaluates electrospun gelatin and polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffolds as a potential biomaterial suitable for use in regeneration of corneal stromal tissue. Electrospun gelatin has been used for many years in tissue engineering, however, post‐production modification, such as crosslinking, is usually required to mechanically strengthen such scaffolds. This paper aims therefore to compare glutaraldehyde (GA) cross‐linked electrospun gelatin scaffolds with electrospun blends of gelatin and PCL at different ratios. Scaffolds were fabricated using electrospinning and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Attenuated Total Reflectance‐Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR), and tensile testing. To evaluate biocompatibility, primary human corneal stromal cells (hCSC) were seeded upon the scaffolds to assess adherence, proliferation and phenotype. Results demonstrated that scaffolds fabricated from mixtures of gelatin and PCL showed increased mechanical strength and plasticity compared to scaffolds fabricated from GA cross‐linked gelatin alone. In addition, scaffolds fabricated from PCL and gelatin showed comparable support of hCSC adhesion and proliferation. In conclusion, blended mixtures of gelatin and PCL can be considered as an option in the selection of corneal repair materials in the future

Numerical modelling of perimeter pile groups in clay
The load distribution among piles in a group varies such that the inner piles often carry a smaller share of the total load compared to the outer piles, which is a result of increased soil–pile interaction. The main objective of this paper is to establish the relative effectiveness of pile groups with no inner piles (perimeter group), when compared to the more common grid configuration. The numerical investigation utilized the finite element programme ABAQUS and considered a range of variables that affect pile group behaviour including number of piles, pile spacing, length/diameter ratio, and soil strength. It was demonstrated that a complete grid group is less efficient than a perimeter group, where efficiency is defined as the load capacity of the whole group expressed as a ratio of the number of piles in the group multiplied by the load capacity of a single isolated pile. Efficiencies close to unity were observed for some perimeter groups. Perimeter groups also showed that a “block” type group failure could occur, where piles were placed at a spacing of less than 2.0 pile diameters,d, centre-to-centre. This often, but not always, led to a reduction in the efficiency of the pile group
Euclidean Distances, soft and spectral Clustering on Weighted Graphs
We define a class of Euclidean distances on weighted graphs, enabling to
perform thermodynamic soft graph clustering. The class can be constructed form
the "raw coordinates" encountered in spectral clustering, and can be extended
by means of higher-dimensional embeddings (Schoenberg transformations).
Geographical flow data, properly conditioned, illustrate the procedure as well

Dynamical ionization ignition of clusters in intense and short laser pulses
The electron dynamics of rare gas clusters in laser fields is investigated
quantum mechanically by means of time-dependent density functional theory. The
mechanism of early inner and outer ionization is revealed. The formation of an
electron wave packet inside the cluster shortly after the first removal of a
small amount of electron density is observed. By collisions with the cluster
boundary the wave packet oscillation is driven into resonance with the laser
field, hence leading to higher absorption of laser energy. Inner ionization is
increased because the electric field of the bouncing electron wave packet adds
up constructively to the laser field. The fastest electrons in the wave packet
escape from the cluster as a whole so that outer ionization is increased as

Scattering of elastic waves by periodic arrays of spherical bodies
We develop a formalism for the calculation of the frequency band structure of
a phononic crystal consisting of non-overlapping elastic spheres, characterized
by Lam\'e coefficients which may be complex and frequency dependent, arranged
periodically in a host medium with different mass density and Lam\'e
coefficients. We view the crystal as a sequence of planes of spheres, parallel
to and having the two dimensional periodicity of a given crystallographic
plane, and obtain the complex band structure of the infinite crystal associated
with this plane. The method allows one to calculate, also, the transmission,
reflection, and absorption coefficients for an elastic wave (longitudinal or
transverse) incident, at any angle, on a slab of the crystal of finite
thickness. We demonstrate the efficiency of the method by applying it to a

Gemcitabine-Based Neoadjuvant Treatment in Borderline Resectable Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma: A Meta-Analysis of Individual Patient Data
Background: Non-randomized studies have investigated multi-agent gemcitabinebased neo-adjuvant therapies (GEM-NAT) in borderline resectable pancreatic
ductal adenocarcinoma (BR-PDAC). Treatment sequencing and specific elements
of neoadjuvant treatment are still under investigation. The present meta-analysis aims to
assess the effectiveness of GEM-NAT on overall survival (OS) in BR-PDAC.
Patients and Methods: A meta-analysis of individual participant data (IPD) on GEMNAT for BR-PDAC were performed. The primary outcome was OS after treatment with
GEM-based chemotherapy. In the Individual Patient Data analysis data were reappraised
and confirmed as BR-PDAC on provided radiological data.
Results: Six studies investigating GEM-NAT were included in the IPD metanalysis.
The IPD metanalysis was conducted on 271 patients who received GEM-NAT.
Pooled median patient-level OS was 22.2 months (95%CI 19.1–25.2). R0 rates
ranged between 81 and 95% (I
2 = 0%, p = 0.64), respectively. Median OS was
27.8 months (95%CI 23.9–31.6) in the patients who received NAT-GEM followed
by resection compared to 15.4 months (95%CI 12.3–18.4) for NAT-GEM without
resection and 13.0 months (95%CI 7.4–18.5) in the group of patients who received
upfront surgery (p < 0.0001). R0 rates ranged between 81 and 95% (I
2 = 0%,
p = 0.64), respectively. Overall survival in the R0 group was 29.3 months (95%
CI 24.3–34.2) vs. 16.2 months (95% CI 7·9–24.5) in the R1 group (p = 0·001). Conclusions: The present study is the first meta-analysis combining IPD from a
number of international centers with BR-PDAC in a cohort that underwent multi-agent

Modelling rotavirus concentrations in rivers: Assessing Uganda's present and future microbial water quality
Faecal pathogens can be introduced into surface water through open defecation, illegal disposal and inadequate treatment of faecal sludge and wastewater. Despite sanitation improvements, poor countries are progressing slowly towards the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 6 by 2030. Sanitation-associated pathogenic contamination of surface waters impacted by future population growth, urbanization and climate change receive limited attention. Therefore, a model simulating human rotavirus river inputs and concentrations was developed combining population density, sanitation coverage, rotavirus incidence, wastewater treatment and environmental survival data, and applied to Uganda. Complementary surface runoff and river discharge data were used to produce spatially explicit rotavirus outputs for the year 2015 and for two scenarios in 2050. Urban open defecation contributed 87%, sewers 9% and illegal faecal sludge disposal 3% to the annual 15.6 log10 rotavirus river inputs in 2015. Monthly concentrations fell between -3.7 (Q5) and 2.6 (Q95) log10 particles per litre, with 1.0 and 2.0 median and mean log10 particles per litre, respectively. Spatially explicit outputs on 0.0833 × 0.0833° grids revealed hotspots as densely populated urban areas. Future population growth, urbanization and poor sanitation were stronger drivers of rotavirus concentrations in rivers than climate change. The social underpinnings of mental distress in the time of COVID-19 – time for urgent action
We argue that predictions of a ‘tsunami’ of mental health problems as a consequence of the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and the lockdown are overstated; feelings of anxiety and sadness are entirely normal reactions to difficult circumstances, not symptoms of poor mental health. Some people will need specialised mental health support, especially those already leading tough lives; we need immediate reversal of years of underfunding of community mental health services. However, the disproportionate effects of COVID-19 on the most disadvantaged, especially BAME people placed at risk by their social and economic conditions, were entirely predictable. Mental health is best ensured by urgently rebuilding the social and economic supports stripped away over the last decade. Governments must pump funds into local authorities to rebuild community services, peer support, mutual aid and local community and voluntary sector organisations. Health care organisations must tackle racism and discrimination to ensure genuine equal access to universal health care. Government must replace highly conditional benefit systems by something like a universal basic income. All economic and social policies must be subjected to a legally binding mental health audit. This may sound unfeasibly expensive, but the social and economic costs, not to mention the costs in personal and community suffering, though often invisible, are far greater
