Endurance testing of downstream cathodes on a low-power MPD thruster
A low-power MPD thruster with downstream cathode was tested for endurance with a series of hollow cathode designs. Failure modes and failure mechanisms were identified. A new hollow cathode (with rod inserts) has emerged which shows promise for long life. The downstream positioning of the cathode was also changed from an on-axis location to an off-axis location. Data are presented for a 1332-hour life test of this new hollow cathode located at the new off-axis location. Xenon propellant was used
A Study for a Tracking Trigger at First Level for CMS at SLHC
It is expected that the LHC accelerator and experiments will undergo a
luminosity upgrade which will commence after several years of running. This
part of the LHC operations is referred to as Super-LHC (SLHC) and is expected
to provide beams of an order of magnitude larger luminosity (1035cm-2sec-1)
than the current design. Preliminary results are presented from a feasibility
study for a First Level Tracking Trigger for CMS at the SLHC using the data of
the inner tracking detector. As a model for these studies the current CMS pixel
detector with the same pixel size and radial distances from the beam has been
used. Monte Carlo studies have been performed using the full CMS simulation
package (OSCAR) and the occupancy of such a detector at SLHC beam conditions
has been calculated. The design of an electron trigger which uses both the
calorimeter energy depositions and the pixel data to identify isolated
electrons and photons has been investigated. Results on the tracker occupancy

Spectral Variations in Early-Type Galaxies as a Function of Mass
We report on the strengths of three spectral indicators - Mg_2, Hbeta, and
Hn/Fe - in the integrated light of a sample of 100 field and cluster E/S0
galaxies. The measured indices are sensitive to age and/or and metallicity
variations within the galaxy sample. Using linear regression analysis for data
with non-uniform errors, we determine the intrinsic scatter present among the
spectral indices of our galaxy sample as a function of internal velocity
dispersion. Our analysis indicates that there is significantly more intrinsic
scatter in the two Balmer line indices than in the Mg_2 index, indicating that
the Balmer indices provide more dynamic range in determining the age of a
stellar population than does the Mg_2 index. Furthermore, the scatter is much
larger for the low velocity dispersion galaxies, indicating that star formation

Velocity map imaging of the dynamics of the CH3 + HCl -> CH4 + Cl reaction using a dual molecular beam method
International audienceThe reactions CH3 + HCl → CH4 + Cl(<sup>2</sup>P<sub>3/2</sub>) and CD<sub>3</sub> + HCl → CD<sub>3</sub>H + Cl(<sup>2</sup>P<sub>3/2</sub>) have been studied by photo-initiation (by CH<sub>3</sub>I or CD<sub>3</sub>I photolysis at 266 nm) in a dual molecular beam apparatus. Product Cl(<sup>2</sup>P</sub>3/2</sub>) atoms were detected using resonance enhanced multi-photon ionisation and velocity map imaging, revealing product translational energy and angular scattering distributions in the centre-of-mass frame. Image analysis is complicated by the bimodal speed distribution of CH<sub>3</sub> (and CD<sub>3</sub>) radicals formed in coincidence with I(<sup>2</sup>P<sub>3/2</sub>) and I(<sup>2</sup>P<sub>1/2</sub>) atoms from CH<sub>3</sub>I (CD<sub>3</sub>I) photodissociation, giving overlapping Newton diagrams with displaced centre of mass velocities. The relative reactivities to form Cl atoms are greater for the slower CH<sub>3</sub> speed group than the faster group by factors of ~1.5 for the reaction of CH<sub>3</sub> and ~2.5 for the reaction of CD<sub>3</sub>, consistent with the greater propensity of the faster methyl radicals to undergo electronically adiabatic reactions to form Cl(<sup>2</sup>P<sub>1/2</sub>). The average fraction of the available energy becoming product translational energy is = 0.48 ± 0.05 and 0.50 ± 0.03 for reaction of the faster and slower sets of CH<sub>3</sub> radicals, respectively. The Cl atoms are deduced to be preferentially forward scattered with respect to the HCl reagents, but the angular distributions from the dual beam imaging experiments require correction for under-detection of forward scattered Cl products
Margins within margins?: voices Speaking through a study of the provision of an educational program for the children of one Australian show circuit
This paper examines the tactics used by the Showmen's Guild of Australasia in successfully lobbying for the development of a distance education program for their children. The Guild is considered to be a 'marginalized' group, meaning members have less access to wealth, power, and status. Since 1930, members of the Showmen's Guild and their families have traveled from town to town providing agricultural and equestrian shows. Despite the diversity of backgrounds and experiences among people connected with the show circuit, the Guild is highly organized and has been politically active. Informal sanctions have been effective in enforcing group discipline and in presenting the image of a single body of opinion. In addition, investment in sophisticated machinery and technology has resulted in show people having the financial resources to buy homes and have a political voice via more 'normalized channels'. Although members learn early that they are a marginalized group and are perceived as different from the mainstream, the group maintains close ties and often celebrates its difference. Implications for educational program development center on the goals of educational programs designed for disadvantaged groups, and the status of other marginalized groups and their efforts to contest their marginalized status. Summary of all cycle II.5 shear and boundary layer measurements, aerodynamics
The two measurement systems were used to measure mean velocity and velocity, mass flux, and total temperature fluctuations in the turbulent boundary on the fuselage of a KC-135 aircraft. The boundary layer thickness ranged between about 20 and 30 cm for the range of flight Mach numbers from about 0.25 to 0.85 and Reynolds numbers between 3 and 6 x 10 to the 6th power/m. The adaptation of each system for use in airborne applications is discussed. The data obtained from each system are given and compared with each other and they indicate that the two systems represent viable ones for use in future airborne turbulence experiments
The LHC di-photon excess and Gauge Coupling Unification in Extra Heterotic-String Derived Models
The di-photon excess observed at the LHC can be explained as a Standard Model
singlet that is produced and decays by heavy vector-like colour triplets and
electroweak doublets in one-loop diagrams. The characteristics of the required
spectrum are well motivated in heterotic-string constructions that allow for a
light . Anomaly cancellation of the symmetry
requires the existence of the Standard Model singlet and vector-like states in
the vicinity of the breaking scale. In this paper we show
that the agreement with the gauge coupling data at one-loop is identical to the
case of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, owing to cancellations
between the additional states. We further show that effects arising from heavy
thresholds may push the supersymmetric spectrum beyond the reach of the LHC,
while maintaining the agreement with the gauge coupling data. We show that the
string inspired model can indeed account for the observed signal and discuss

Addressing spin transitions on 209Bi donors in silicon using circularly-polarized microwaves
Over the past decade donor spin qubits in isotopically enriched Si
have been intensely studied due to their exceptionally long coherence times.
More recently bismuth donor electron spins have become popular because Bi has a
large nuclear spin which gives rise to clock transitions (first-order
insensitive to magnetic field noise). At every clock transition there are two
nearly degenerate transitions between four distinct states which can be used as
a pair of qubits. Here it is experimentally demonstrated that these transitions
are excited by microwaves of opposite helicity such that they can be
selectively driven by varying microwave polarization. This work uses a
combination of a superconducting coplanar waveguide (CPW) microresonator and a
dielectric resonator to flexibly generate arbitrary elliptical polarizations
while retaining the high sensitivity of the CPW
