Radiation calculations for the ATLAS detector and experimental hall
This paper describes the calculations performed to characterise the radiation field in the ATLAS detector at the LHC and to design the shielding of the detector and experimental areas. After a short description of the ATLAS detector, the simulations made with the MC code FLUKA are described in some detail. The radiation fields calculated in the inner cavity, in the calorimeters, in the experimental cavern, in the shafts and in an external skyshine region are presented
Annealing twin development during recrystallization and grain growth in pure nickel
International audienceA 99.995% pure Ni sample, compressed to 25%, was annealed in a SEM chamber and changes in the density of annealing twins were monitored in situ during recrystallization and grain growth. In addition to average microstructural measurements, the evolution of individual grains was also observed. Both the average annealing twin density in the recrystallized domain and the annealing twin density per grain increased during recrystallization. The rate of increase in twin density correlates with the velocity of the recrystallization front. During grain growth, however, the average annealing twin density decreased. The in situ EBSD observations showed both the formation of new twins and the extension of existing twins during annealing. The observations reported here suggest that the existing models for annealing twin formation are incomplete
How Covid-19 has changed language assessments in higher education: a practitioners’ view
This chapter examines the responses of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to assessment-related challenges introduced by the Covid-19 pandemic. The sudden move to online teaching and assessments required institutions to re-think their approaches to current practices and provide alternative solutions almost overnight. Our survey aimed to gather the perceptions of language teaching practitioners on how the languages sector dealt with the move to digital assessments, with particular emphasis on the delivery of online assessments, the impact on different language skills, as well as academic integrity. Results show that, whilst different institutions adopted varying practices, they seem to share similar concerns in addressing the fast-changing environment and ensure that academic integrity remains at the forefront in the move to the digital world
Integrable mappings and polynomial growth
We describe birational representations of discrete groups generated by
involutions, having their origin in the theory of exactly solvable
vertex-models in lattice statistical mechanics. These involutions correspond
respectively to two kinds of transformations on matrices: the
inversion of the matrix and an (involutive) permutation of the
entries of the matrix. We concentrate on the case where these permutations are
elementary transpositions of two entries. In this case the birational
transformations fall into six different classes. For each class we analyze the
factorization properties of the iteration of these transformations. These
factorization properties enable to define some canonical homogeneous
polynomials associated with these factorization properties. Some mappings yield
a polynomial growth of the complexity of the iterations. For three classes the
successive iterates, for , actually lie on elliptic curves. This analysis
also provides examples of integrable mappings in arbitrary dimension, even
infinite. Moreover, for two classes, the homogeneous polynomials are shown to
satisfy non trivial non-linear recurrences. The relations between
factorizations of the iterations, the existence of recurrences on one or
several variables, as well as the integrability of the mappings are analyzed.Comment: 45 page
Spin chains from dynamical quadratic algebras
We present a construction of integrable quantum spin chains where local
spin-spin interactions are weighted by ``position''-dependent potential
containing abelian non-local spin dependance. This construction applies to the
previously defined three general quadratic reflection-type algebras:
respectively non-dynamical, semidynamical, fully dynamical.Comment: 12 pages, no figures; v2: corrected formulas of the last sectio
Comparison of codes assessing galactic cosmic radiation exposure of aircraft crew
The assessment of the exposure to cosmic radiation onboard aircraft is one of the preoccupations of bodies responsible for radiation protection. Cosmic particle flux is significantly higher onboard aircraft than at ground level and its intensity depends on the solar activity. The dose is usually estimated using codes validated by the experimental data. In this paper, a comparison of various codes is presented, some of them are used routinely, to assess the dose received by the aircraft crew caused by the galactic cosmic radiation. Results are provided for periods close to solar maximum and minimum and for selected flights covering major commercial routes in the world. The overall agreement between the codes, particularly for those routinely used for aircraft crew dosimetry, was better than ±20 % from the median in all but two cases. The agreement within the codes is considered to be fully satisfactory for radiation protection purpose
Lactoferrin is a survival factor for neutrophils in rheumatoid synovial fluid
Objectives. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein that is released from activated neutrophils at sites of inflammation and has anti-microbial as well as anti-inflammatory properties. This study set out to determine whether lactoferrin can delay neutrophil apoptosis and could act as a survival factor for neutrophils in SF
Expression of the 60 kDa and 71 kDa heat shock proteins and presence of antibodies against the 71 kDa heat shock protein in pediatric patients with immune thrombocytopenic purpura
BACKGROUND: Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disease characterized by platelet destruction resulting from autoantibodies against platelet proteins, particularly platelet glycoprotein IIb/IIIa. Heat shock proteins (Hsp) have been shown to be major antigenic determinants in some autoimmune diseases. Antibodies to Hsps have also been reported to be associated with a number of pathological states. METHODS: Using western blot, we measured the levels of the 60 kDa heat shock protein (Hsp60) and of the inducible 71 kDa member of the Hsp70 family (Hsp71) in lymphocytes and the presence of antibodies against these hsps in plasma of 29 pediatric patients with ITP before the treatment and in 6 other patients before and after treatment. RESULTS: Interestingly only one out of 29 patients showed detectable Hsp60 in lymphocytes while this heat shock protein was detected in the 30 control children. Hsp71 levels were slightly lower in lymphocytes of patients with ITP than in controls (1567.8 ± 753.2 via 1763.2 ± 641.8 integrated optical density (IOD) units). There was a small increase of Hsp71 after recovery from ITP. The titers of plasma antibodies against Hsp60 and Hsp71 were also examined. Antibodies against Hsp71 were more common in ITP patients (15/29) than in control children (5/30). The titer of anti-Hsp71 was also higher in children patients with ITP. The prevalence of ITP children with antibodies against Hsp71 (51.7%) was as high as those with antibodies against platelet membrane glycoproteins (58.3%). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, pediatric patients with ITP showed no detectable expression of Hsp60 in lymphocytes and a high prevalence of antibody against Hsp71 in plasma. These changes add to our understanding of the pathogenesis of ITP and may be important for the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of ITP
