    Supply Chain Transformation in Apc Ireland: Lean Thinking, Opposing Logics and Bricolage

    This paper presents a number of observations and\ud findings from an ongoing study of supply chain\ud transformation in a subsidiary of American Power Conversion (APC) located in the West of Ireland.\ud The study is being carried out in a period of significant change within both the Irish economy and the\ud APC Corporation. The research addresses the question of how innovation can contribute to the sustainability and development of the Operations function in a time of transition. To begin with, a review is presented of\ud relevant research and theory in the areas\ud of lean supply, innovative culture and information systems bricolage. Then the context and composition of the lean transformation team involved in the case study are described together with the research design.\ud The work proposes to make a contribution in two areas.\ud Firstly by providing empirical evidence of the role of innovation in an organizational transformation and the challenge of incorporating bricolage in the course of\ud information systems design. Secondly to the building of theory by proposing that organizational innovation\ud can be viewed as a dynamic process of tuning\ud ā€œopposing logicsā€. The paper concludes by suggesting\ud that the study has significance in the context of Irelandā€™s objectives of moving to an innovation economy and of strengthening academic-industrial collaboration

    Oā€™GORMAN, E.C., KAVANAGH, B. and ROCHFORD,J.: HOME RANGE AND HABITAT USE BY THE ENDANGERED GREY PARTRIDGE (Perdix perdix) IN THE IRISH MIDLANDS: The last potentially viable population of native Irish Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix) is located over a 25 km2 area at Boora bog, Co. Offaly, in the Irish midlands. The habitat is a mosaic of cutaway bogland, coniferous forestry, newly created farmland and wetlands. Since 1996 a combination of predation control and the provision of habitat strips has been the focus of conservation efforts in Boora in an attempt to increase partridge numbers in the short-term. The aim of this study is to provide baseline information on partridge movements and habitat use in the conservation site. The result of two years fieldwork is presented. An area of 18 km2 was mapped during the course of fielwork. Nine male birds were radio-tracked. The biological time periods (B.T.P.) calculated for breeding pairs were Exploration, Prelay, Lay, Incubation, Brood rearing, Primary and Secondqary covey movements. The home range varied in size and location from one B.T.P. to the next. This was linked to habitat availability. Breeding attempts occurred in young forestry plantations and newly created habitat strips within the cutaway bog area. The coveys left the cutaway bog area in late summer to feed on nerby pasture. A second movement in late Autumn was made to utilise winter stubbles on adjacent farmland. Birds returned to breeding sites in the cutaway bog area the following spring. The practical applications of the findings to the conservation effort are discussed

    Polarization mode dispersion compensator field trial and field fiber characterization

    Two high-PMD long distance routes were characterized and used to test an optical polarization mode dispersion compensator (PMDC) under field conditions. For this trial, 110 km routes with mean PMD values of 25 and 26.5 ps were provisioned with commercial WDM transport equipment and tested for several weeks. The route was comprised of three spans of characterized fiber that followed railroad tracks. We show the temporal variation of the output polarization state and the evolution of first- and second-order PMD spectra over 7 days. The deployment of a variable-length PMDC on these links allowed error-free transmission of an OC-192 signal. Splitting the output to receivers with and without PMDC demonstrated specific PMD events that caused errors in the absence of a PMDC. (C) 2002 Optical Society of America

    Growth and evolution of tetracyanoquinodimethane and potassium coadsorption phases on Ag(111)

    Alkali-doping is a very efficient way of tuning the electronic properties of active molecular layers in (opto-) electronic devices based on organic semiconductors. In this context, we report on the phase formation and evolution of charge transfer salts formed by 7, 7, 8, 8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in coadsorption with potassium on a Ag(111) surface. Based on an in-situ study using low energy electron microscopy and diffraction we identify the structural properties of four phases with different stoichiometries, and follow their growth and inter-phase transitions. We label these four phases Ī± to Ī“, with increasing K content, the last two of which (Ī³ and Ī“-phases) have not been previously reported. During TCNQ deposition on a K-precovered Ag(111) surface we find a superior stability of Ī“-phase islands compared to the Ī³-phase; continued TCNQ deposition leads to a direct transition from the Ī“ to the Ī²-phase when the K : TCNQ ratio corresponding to this phase regime is reached, with no intermediate Ī³-phase formation. When, instead, K is deposited on a surface precovered with large islands of the low density commensurate (LDC) TCNQ phase that are surrounded by a TCNQ 2D-gas, we observe two different scenarios: on the one hand, in the 2D-gas phase regions, very small Ī±-phase islands are formed (close to the resolution limit of the microscope, 10ā€“15 nm), which transform to Ī²-phase islands of similar size with increasing K deposition. On the other hand, the large (micrometer-sized) TCNQ islands transform directly to similarly large single-domain Ī²-phase islands, the formation of the intermediate Ī±-phase being suppressed. This frustration of the LDC-to-Ī± transition can be lifted by performing the experiment at elevated temperature. In this sense, the morphology of the pure TCNQ submonolayer is conserved during phase transitions

    Identification of a novel variant of LMP-1 of EBV in patients with endemic Burkitt lymphoma in western Kenya

    BACKGROUND: Epstein Barr virus (EBV) is a gammaherpesvirus that is associated with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and endemic Burkitt lymphoma (eBL). EBV carries several latent genes that contribute to oncogenesis including the latent membrane protein 1 (LMP-1), a known oncogene and constitutively active CD40 homolog. Variation in the C terminal region of LMP-1 has been linked to NPC pathogenesis, but little is known regarding LMP-1 variation and eBL. RESULTS: In the present study, peripheral blood samples were obtained from 38 eBL patients and 22 healthy controls in western Kenya, where the disease is endemic. The LMP-1 C-terminal region from these samples was sequenced and analyzed. The frequency of a 30 base pair deletion of LMP-1 previously linked to NPC was not associated with eBL compared to healthy controls. However a novel LMP-1 variant was identified, called K for Kenya and for the G318K mutation that characterizes it. The K variant LMP-1 was found in 40.5% of eBL sequences and 25.0% of healthy controls. All K variant sequences contained mutations in both of the previously described minimal T cell epitopes in the C terminal end of LMP-1. These mutations occurred in the anchor residue at the C-terminal binding groove of both epitopes, a pocket necessary for MHC loading. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, our results suggest that there is a novel K variant of LMP-1 in Kenya that may be associated with eBL. Further studies are necessary to determine the functional implications of the LMP-1 variant on early events in eBL genesis

    Ethical Leadership as a Balance Between Opposing Neural Networks

    In this article, we explore the implications of opposing domains theory for developing ethical leaders. Opposing domains theory highlights a neurological tension between analytic reasoning and socioemotional reasoning. Specifically, when we engage in analytic reasoning, we suppress our ability to engage in socioemotional reasoning and vice versa. In this article, we bring together the domains of neuroscience, psychology, and ethics, to inform our theorizing around ethical leadership. We propose that a key issue for ethical leadership is achieving a healthy balance between analytic reasoning and socioemotional reasoning. We argue that organizational culture often encourages too heavy a reliance on nonemotional forms of reasoning to arrive at moral judgments. As a result, leaders run the risk of suppressing their ability to pay attention to the human side of moral dilemmas and, in doing so, dehumanize colleagues, particularly subordinates, and clients

    Platforms to differentiate exotic pathovars of plant bacteria

    Many of the EPPs that pose the biggest threat to the biosecurity of Australiaā€™s plant industries are bacterial, but difficulties in identification to the subspecific or ā€˜ pathovar ā€™ level can seriously delay incursion management and affect market access. Pathovars are defined by host specificity so bio assays remain the definitive means of identification, but these require high level physical containment and can be slow and subjective , delaying diagnosis . Some pathovar - specific serological and molecular tests are available but better diagnostic methods are often required. This project used proteomics and metabolomics, platforms that identify functional molecules potentially associated with plant - pathogen interactions, to identify biomarkers that differentiate pathovars in species of Xanthomonas . Membrane - associated proteins from a collection of bacterial isolates were compared on 2Dimensional gels. Proteins that were found to be differentially expressed between distinct pathovars may be important modulators of host specificity so they were identified and the genes that encode them located by reference to genomic sequences . DNA - based assays targeting these genes were designed and validated for their specificity to the pathovar level . We have developed two new assays that provide levels of specificity not reported elsewhere in the literature. These assays specifically target the bacteria causing the different forms of citrus canker, but without cross - reaction to the closely - related organisms causing bacterial blight on cotton and Citrus Bacterial Spot. The molecular assays will be incorporated into the National Diagnostic Protocol for citrus canker through the SPHDS process. The metabolomics component has analysed metabolite expression in selected bacterial pathovars. Results showed separation between the different pathovars based on differential levels of expression of particular metabolites. These metabolites may be important determinants of pathogenicity. Neither proteomics nor metabolomics had been implemented before in the study of phytopathogenic bacteria and whilst both proved to be technically demanding, each delivered new biomarkers that differentiate phytopathogenic bacteria to a subspecific level . This confirmed the viability of these approaches as platforms to discover novel diagnostic targets. The new methods developed will be implemented into the national incursion response capability , improving the specificity of diagnostic testing available and reducing the possibility of false positive diagnosis . The project has fostered new collaborative partnerships both nationally (NSW, Victoria, WA) and internationally (to Thailand and the USA). The next phase of this work will provide a strong start - up project to the Plant Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre ( PBCRC ) . This project has directly enhanced the plant bacteriology capacity of NSW and Australia trough the recruitment and training of science professionals and an undergraduate student , and supported the specialist training of a Thai scientist through allied project CRC20093
