Estimation of Optimal Size of Plots for Experiments with Radiometer in Beans
An experimental error can lead to rework and, consequently, to the loss of financial and human resources. One way to reduce this problem is the estimation of the optimum size of experimental plot to carry out the treatments. The objective of this study was to estimate the optimal size of plots for reflectance measurements in beans by the modified maximum curvature method and the maximum distance method. Reflectance readings were made on bean plants with the aid of the GreenSeekerÂź equipment, obtaining basic units of 0.45 mÂČ in an area of lines 6 and 8 m in length, performing 46 combinations of experimental area. X0 was determined using the modified maximum curvature and the maximum distance method. To increase the RÂČ, the calculations have been redone using 20 combinations of experimental area. By adopting the bigest obtained area, it was concluded that the optimum size of an experimental plot for works with reflectance in beans is 5.40 mÂČ and the combination that presents the best distribution is 2 lines totalling 6 m long.Keywords: Reflectance, Experimental Error, Modified Maximum Curvature, Maximum Distanc
Optimum mask and source patterns to print a given shape
New degrees of freedom can be optimized in mask shapes when the source is also adjustable, because required image symmetries can be provided by the source rather than the collected wave front. The optimized mask will often consist of novel sets of shapes that are quite different in layout from the target integrated circuit patterns. This implies that the optimization algorithm should have good global convergence properties, since the target patterns may not be a suitable starting solution.
We have developed an algorithm that can optimize mask and source without using a starting design. Examples are shown where the process window obtained is between two and six times larger than that achieved with standard reticle enhancement techniques (RET). The optimized masks require phase shift, but no trim mask is used. Thus far we can only optimize two-dimensional patterns over small fields (periodicities of ;1 mm or less), though patterns in two separate fields can be
jointly optimized for maximum common window under a single source. Trial protocol OPPTIMUM : does progesterone prophylaxis for the prevention of preterm labour improve outcome?
Background
Preterm birth is a global problem, with a prevalence of 8 to 12% depending on location. Several large trials and systematic reviews have shown progestogens to be effective in preventing or delaying preterm birth in selected high risk women with a singleton pregnancy (including those with a short cervix or previous preterm birth). Although an improvement in short term neonatal outcomes has been shown in some trials these have not consistently been confirmed in meta-analyses. Additionally data on longer term outcomes is limited to a single trial where no difference in outcomes was demonstrated at four years of age of the child, despite those in the âprogesteroneâ group having a lower incidence of preterm birth.
Methods/Design
The OPPTIMUM study is a double blind randomized placebo controlled trial to determine whether progesterone prophylaxis to prevent preterm birth has long term neonatal or infant benefit. Specifically it will study whether, in women with singleton pregnancy and at high risk of preterm labour, prophylactic vaginal natural progesterone, 200âmg daily from 22 â 34âweeks gestation, compared to placebo, improves obstetric outcome by lengthening pregnancy thus reducing the incidence of preterm delivery (before 34âweeks), improves neonatal outcome by reducing a composite of death and major morbidity, and leads to improved childhood cognitive and neurosensory outcomes at two years of age. Recruitment began in 2009 and is scheduled to close in Spring 2013. As of May 2012, over 800 women had been randomized in 60 sites.
Discussion
OPPTIMUM will provide further evidence on the effectiveness of vaginal progesterone for prevention of preterm birth and improvement of neonatal outcomes in selected groups of women with singleton pregnancy at high risk of preterm birth. Additionally it will determine whether any reduction in the incidence of preterm birth is accompanied by improved childhood outcome

Objetiva-se apresentar categoria referente a necessidades relacionadas Ă autonomia, reconhecidas pelos profissionais da EstratĂ©gia SaĂșde da FamĂlia no que concerne Ă atenção Ă saĂșde de mulheres que vivenciam violĂȘncia. Para a produção do material empĂrico foram feitas entrevistas com profissionais de saĂșde que compĂ”em as equipes da ESF e com mulheres usuĂĄrias do serviço. Os significados conformam a necessidade de autonomia relacionada Ă mulher como sujeito na tomada de decisĂ”es. Entretanto, alguns significados revelaram o reducionismo que se traduz na desresponsabilização do serviço em relação ao problema. A autonomia financeira foi um aspecto convergente entre os discursos dos profissionais e das usuĂĄrias do serviço de saĂșde. Concluiu-se que para o enfrentamento da violĂȘncia Ă© fundamental a inclusĂŁo da perspectiva de gĂȘnero tanto nas polĂticas de saĂșde quanto nas prĂĄticas concretizadas no processo de trabalho, condição que abre possibilidades de respostas a necessidades prĂĄticas e estratĂ©gicas de gĂȘnero, contribuindo para a redução da iniqĂŒidade entre homens e mulheres e a promoção da emancipação feminina
Supersymmetric mass spectra and the seesaw type-I scale
We calculate supersymmetric mass spectra with cMSSM boundary conditions and a
type-I seesaw mechanism added to explain current neutrino data. Using
published, estimated errors on SUSY mass observables for a combined LHC+ILC
analysis, we perform a theoretical analysis to identify parameter
regions where pure cMSSM and cMSSM plus seesaw type-I might be distinguishable
with LHC+ILC data. The most important observables are determined to be the
(left) smuon and selectron masses and the splitting between them, respectively.
Splitting in the (left) smuon and selectrons is tiny in most of cMSSM parameter
space, but can be quite sizeable for large values of the seesaw scale,
. Thus, for very roughly GeV hints for type-I
seesaw might appear in SUSY mass measurements. Since our numerical results
depend sensitively on forecasted error bars, we discuss in some detail the
accuracies, which need to be achieved, before a realistic analysis searching
for signs of type-I seesaw in SUSY spectra can be carried out.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figure
Violence against adolescents: an analysis based on the categories gender and generation
Exploratory and descriptive study based on quantitative and qualitative methods that analyze the phenomenon of violence against adolescents based on gender and generational categories. The data source was reports of violence from the Curitiba Protection Network from 2010 to 2012 and semi-structured interviews with 16 sheltered adolescents. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS software version 20.0 and the qualitative data were subjected to content analysis. The adolescents were victims of violence in the household and outside of the family environment, as victims or viewers of violence. The violence was experienced at home, mostly toward girls, with marked overtones of gender violence. More than indicating the magnitude of the issue, this study can give information to help qualify the assistance given to victimized people and address how to face this issue
Food color is in the eye of the beholder: the role of human trichromatic vision in food evaluation
Non-human primates evaluate food quality based on brightness of red and green shades of color, with red signaling higher energy or greater protein content in fruits and leafs. Despite the strong association between food and other sensory modalities, humans, too, estimate critical food features, such as calorie content, from vision. Previous research primarily focused on the effects of color on taste/flavor identification and intensity judgments. However, whether evaluation of perceived calorie content and arousal in humans are biased by color has received comparatively less attention. In this study we showed that color content of food images predicts arousal and perceived calorie content reported when viewing food even when confounding variables were controlled for. Specifically, arousal positively co-varied with red-brightness, while green-brightness was negatively associated with arousal and perceived calorie content. This result holds for a large array of food comprising of natural food - where color likely predicts calorie content - and of transformed food where, instead, color is poorly diagnostic of energy content. Importantly, this pattern does not emerged with nonfood items. We conclude that in humans visual inspection of food is central to its evaluation and seems to partially engage the same basic system as non-human primates
Understanding child neglect in a gender context: a study performed in a Brazilian city
OBJECTIVETo describe the phenomenon of child neglect and understand it in a gender context.METHODRetrospective, quantitative, and exploratory study that analyzed reports of violence by a child and adolescent protection network in a Brazilian city. The theoretical and methodological basis applied was TIPESC (Theory of Nursing Praxical Intervention in Collective Health), with a gender emphasis.RESULTSNeglect of children under the age of ten represents more than half the reports received over all the years studied; more boys than girls suffered neglect and 41.4% of the reports of neglect involved children under than age of three; women were identified as being solely responsible in 67.9%, and as accessories in 17.3% of the incidents reported.CONCLUSIONChild neglect is a complex matter, the gender subordinate status inflicted on these children and their mothers who are responsible for their care underscore the social vulnerability of this group
