    Research agenda for preventing mosquito-transmitted diseases through improving the built environment in sub-Saharan Africa

    Mosquito-transmitted diseases are a major threat to health in sub-Saharan Africa, but could be reduced through modifications to the built environment. Here we report findings from a major workshop held to identify the research gaps in this area, namely: (1) evidence of the health benefits to changes to the built environment, (2) understanding how mosquitoes enter buildings, (3) novel methods for reducing mosquito-house entry, (4) sustainable approaches for reducing mosquito habitats, (5) case studies of micro-financing for healthy homes and (6) methods for increasing scale-up.     Randomized Controlled Caregiver Mediated Joint Engagement Intervention for Toddlers with Autism

    This study aimed to determine if a joint attention intervention would result in greater joint engagement between caregivers and toddlers with autism. The intervention consisted of 24 caregiver-mediated sessions with follow-up 1Ā year later. Compared to caregivers and toddlers randomized to the waitlist control group the immediate treatment (IT) group made significant improvements in targeted areas of joint engagement. The IT group demonstrated significant improvements with medium to large effect sizes in their responsiveness to joint attention and their diversity of functional play acts after the intervention with maintenance of these skills 1Ā year post-intervention. These are among the first randomized controlled data to suggest that short-term parent-mediated interventions can have important effects on core impairments in toddlers with autism.     M-GCAT: interactively and efficiently constructing large-scale multiple genome comparison frameworks in closely related species

    BACKGROUND: Due to recent advances in whole genome shotgun sequencing and assembly technologies, the financial cost of decoding an organism's DNA has been drastically reduced, resulting in a recent explosion of genomic sequencing projects. This increase in related genomic data will allow for in depth studies of evolution in closely related species through multiple whole genome comparisons. RESULTS: To facilitate such comparisons, we present an interactive multiple genome comparison and alignment tool, M-GCAT, that can efficiently construct multiple genome comparison frameworks in closely related species. M-GCAT is able to compare and identify highly conserved regions in up to 20 closely related bacterial species in minutes on a standard computer, and as many as 90 (containing 75 cloned genomes from a set of 15 published enterobacterial genomes) in an hour. M-GCAT also incorporates a novel comparative genomics data visualization interface allowing the user to globally and locally examine and inspect the conserved regions and gene annotations. CONCLUSION: M-GCAT is an interactive comparative genomics tool well suited for quickly generating multiple genome comparisons frameworks and alignments among closely related species.     Indentation Hardness Measurements at Macro-, Micro-, and Nanoscale: A Critical Overview

    The Brinell, Vickers, Meyer, Rockwell, Shore, IHRD, Knoop, Buchholz, and nanoindentation methods used to measure the indentation hardness of materials at different scales are compared, and main issues and misconceptions in the understanding of these methods are comprehensively reviewed and discussed. Basic equations and parameters employed to calculate hardness are clearly explained, and the different international standards for each method are summarized. The limits for each scale are explored, and the different forms to calculate hardness in each method are compared and established. The influence of elasticity and plasticity of the material in each measurement method is reviewed, and the impact of the surface deformation around the indenter on hardness values is examined. The difficulties for practical conversions of hardness values measured by different methods are explained. Finally, main issues in the hardness interpretation at different scales are carefully discussed, like the influence of grain size in polycrystalline materials, indentation size effects at micro-and nanoscale, and the effect of the substrate when calculating thin films hardness.     Esophageal involvement in epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica: Clinical and roentgenographic manifestations

    Epidermolysis bullosa is a rare hereditary mechanobullous skin disorder. Four patients with esophageal involvement are reported. These cases and review of reported cases of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica-recessive (EBD-R) showed distinct clinical and roentgenographie features of esophageal involvement: diffuse inflammatory changes, motility disorders, small blisters or bullae seen as constant nodular-filling defects, esophageal ulcers, scars, pseudodiverticula, transverse and circumferential webs, various size strictures, shortening of the esophagus with development of traction hiatal hernia and gastroesophageal reflux, perforation, and complete obstruction of the esophageal lumen. Dysphagia is reversible when caused by bullae or webs and permanent when due to cicatrizing strictures.
