On the interaction between two Kerr black holes
The double-Kerr solution is generated using both a Backlund transformation
and the Belinskii-Zakharov inverse-scattering technique. We build a dictionary
between the parametrisations naturally obtained in the two methods and show
their equivalence. We then focus on the asymptotically flat double-Kerr system
obeying the axis condition which is Z_2^\phi invariant; for this system there
is an exact formula for the force between the two black holes, in terms of
their physical quantities and the coordinate distance. We then show that 1) the
angular velocity of the two black holes decreases from the usual Kerr value at
infinite distance to zero in the touching limit; 2) the extremal limit of the
two black holes is given by |J|=cM^2, where c depends on the distance and
varies from one to infinity as the distance decreases; 3) for sufficiently
large angular momentum the temperature of the black holes attains a maximum at
a certain finite coordinate distance. All of these results are interpreted in
terms of the dragging effects of the system.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures. v2: changed statement about thermodynamical

The ins and outs of participation in a weather information system
In this paper our aim is to show even though access to technology, information or data holds the potential for improved participation, participation is wired into a larger network of actors, artefacts and information practices. We draw on a case study of a weather information system developed and implemented by a non-profit organisation to both describe the configuration of participation, but also critically assess inclusion and exclusion. We present a set of four questions - a basic, practical toolkit - by which we together with the organisation made sense of and evaluated participation in the system
A fixed point formula for the index of multi-centered N=2 black holes
We propose a formula for computing the (moduli-dependent) contribution of
multi-centered solutions to the total BPS index in terms of the
(moduli-independent) indices associated to single-centered solutions. The main
tool in our analysis is the computation of the refined index Tr(-y)^{2J_3} of
configurational degrees of freedom of multi-centered BPS black hole solutions
in N=2 supergravity by localization methods. When the charges carried by the
centers do not allow for scaling solutions (i.e. solutions where a subset of
the centers can come arbitrarily close to each other), the phase space of
classical BPS solutions is compact and the refined index localizes to a finite
set of isolated fixed points under rotations, corresponding to collinear
solutions. When the charges allow for scaling solutions, the phase space is
non-compact but appears to admit a compactification with finite volume and
additional non-isolated fixed points. We give a prescription for determining
the contributions of these fixed submanifolds by means of a `minimal
modification hypothesis', which we prove in the special case of dipole halo
configurations.Comment: 61 pages, 3 figure
Extensive subclinical sinusitis leading to Moraxella osloensis meningitis.
We report a case of a 31 year old male with extensive subclinical sinusitis leading to erosion in the cribriform plate and subsequent meningitis caused by the organism Moraxella osloensis. The patient presented to the emergency department with rapid onset confusion, neck stiffness and headache. Inflammatory markers, renal and liver function, and a chest radiograph were all normal. CT Head showed extensive polyp disease in the paranasal sinuses with expansion of the left frontal sinus and CT Sinuses revealed an area of low attenuation in the cribriform plate consistent with bony erosion. MRI Head showed thick loculated sinus inflammation. Lumbar puncture yielded CSF with a high white cell count of predominantly mononuclear cells, no visible organisms and an elevated protein. CSF microscopy, culture and viral PCR were not diagnostic, and so the CSF was sent for 16S rDNA PCR screening, which identified the rDNA of Moraxella osloensis. Moraxella osloensis is a rare cause of bacterial meningitis, with only a few reported cases. This case illustrates that sinusitis, while a common condition, when severe can predispose to intracranial infection with atypical and low virulence organisms such as Moraxella species, which do not commonly cause invasive CNS disease. This case represents the first case of Moraxella osloensis meningitis reported from the United Kingdom
Logarithmic Corrections to Extremal Black Hole Entropy from Quantum Entropy Function
We evaluate the one loop determinant of matter multiplet fields of N=4
supergravity in the near horizon geometry of quarter BPS black holes, and use
it to calculate logarithmic corrections to the entropy of these black holes
using the quantum entropy function formalism. We show that even though
individual fields give non-vanishing logarithmic contribution to the entropy,
the net contribution from all the fields in the matter multiplet vanishes. Thus
logarithmic corrections to the entropy of quarter BPS black holes, if present,
must be independent of the number of matter multiplet fields in the theory.
This is consistent with the microscopic results. During our analysis we also
determine the complete spectrum of small fluctuations of matter multiplet
fields in the near horizon geometry.Comment: LaTeX file, 52 pages; v2: minor corrections, references adde
A Universal Lifetime Distribution for Multi-Species Systems
Lifetime distributions of social entities, such as enterprises, products, and
media contents, are one of the fundamental statistics characterizing the social
dynamics. To investigate the lifetime distribution of mutually interacting
systems, simple models having a rule for additions and deletions of entities
are investigated. We found a quite universal lifetime distribution for various
kinds of inter-entity interactions, and it is well fitted by a
stretched-exponential function with an exponent close to 1/2. We propose a
"modified Red-Queen" hypothesis to explain this distribution. We also review
empirical studies on the lifetime distribution of social entities, and
discussed the applicability of the model.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, Proceedings of Social Modeling and Simulations +

A Note on Vectorial AdS/CFT Duality for Spin- Boundary Theory
The vectorial holographic correspondences between higher-spin theories in
AdS and free vector models on the boundary are extended to the cases where
the latter is described by free massless spin- field. The dual higher-spin
theory in the bulk does not include gravity and can only be defined on rigid
AdS background with boundary. We discuss various properties of these
rather special higher-spin theories and calculate their one-loop free energies.
We show that the result is proportional to the same quantity for spin-
doubleton treated as if it is a AdS field. Finally, we consider even more
special case where the boundary theory itself is given by an infinite tower of
massless higher-spin fields.Comment: 27 pages, version to appear in JHE
Logarithmic Corrections to Schwarzschild and Other Non-extremal Black Hole Entropy in Different Dimensions
Euclidean gravity method has been successful in computing logarithmic
corrections to extremal black hole entropy in terms of low energy data, and
gives results in perfect agreement with the microscopic results in string
theory. Motivated by this success we apply Euclidean gravity to compute
logarithmic corrections to the entropy of various non-extremal black holes in
different dimensions, taking special care of integration over the zero modes
and keeping track of the ensemble in which the computation is done. These
results provide strong constraint on any ultraviolet completion of the theory
if the latter is able to give an independent computation of the entropy of
non-extremal black holes from microscopic description. For Schwarzschild black
holes in four space-time dimensions the macroscopic result seems to disagree
with the existing result in loop quantum gravity.Comment: LaTeX, 40 pages; corrected small typos and added reference
Unpacking ‘women’s health’ in the context of PPPs: a return to instrumentalism in development policy and practice?
There has been a significant increase in funding for health programmes in development over the last two decades, partly due to the formation of public–private partnerships. This article examines the impact of public–private partnerships from the perspective of women’s health, asks whether the current culture of funding has led to an increased instrumentalism in women’s health programming and what effects this has on how women’s health is addressed at the level of practice. The article is based on research carried out with UK-based non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and its conclusions raise further challenges for improving women’s health policies and programmes in development
