Prosopopoeia in the funeral poetry of Juan Latino

Juan Latino’s second volume of poetry, published in 1576 in Granada, deals with the dynastic transfers of the royal bodies of Philip II’s family from tombs dispersed over the country to the palace-monastery El Escorial. In this essay, I explore the different functions of Latino's use of prosopopoeia, a rhetorical figure of speech that gives a face to an abstract or absent entity, in the appearances of Charles V and Mother Granada. I show how the two visions and speeches of these personifications are used to shape the cultural memory and identity of the city.

Effect of random disorder and spin frustration on the reentrant spin glass phase and ferromagnetic phase in stage-2 Cu_{0.93}Co_{0.07}Cl_{2} graphite intercalation compound near the multicritical point

Stage-2 Cu0.93_{0.93}Co0.07_{0.07}Cl2_{2} graphite intercalation compound magnetically behaves like a reentrant ferromagnet near the multicritical point (cMCP≈0.96c_{MCP} \approx 0.96). It undergoes two magnetic phase transitions at TRSGT_{RSG} (=6.64±0.05= 6.64 \pm 0.05 K) and TcT_{c} (=8.62±0.05= 8.62 \pm 0.05 K). The static and dynamic nature of the ferromagnetic and reentrant spin glass phase has been studied using DC and AC magnetic susceptibility. Characteristic memory phenomena of the DC susceptibility are observed at TRSGT_{RSG} and TcT_{c}. The nonlinear AC susceptibility χ3′\chi_{3}^{\prime} has a positive local maximum at TRSGT_{RSG}, and a negative local minimum at TcT_{c}. The relaxation time τ\tau between TRSGT_{RSG} and TcT_{c} shows a critical slowing down: τ\tau with x=13.1±0.4x = 13.1 \pm 0.4 and τ0∗=(2.5±0.5)×10−13\tau_{0}^{*} = (2.5 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-13} sec. The influence of the random disorder on the critical behavior above TcT_{c} is clearly observed: α=−0.66\alpha = -0.66, β=0.63\beta = 0.63, and γ=1.40\gamma = 1.40. The exponent of α\alpha is far from that of 3D Heisenberg model.Comment: 15 pages, 16 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

Phylogenetic clustering and rarity imply risk of local species extinction in prospective deep-sea mining areas of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone

An understanding of the forces controlling community structure in the deep sea is essential at a time when its pristineness is threatened by polymetallic nodule mining. Because abiotically defined communities are more sensitive to environmental change, we applied occurrence- and phylogeny-based metrics to determine the importance of biotic versus abiotic structuring processes in nematodes, the most abundant invertebrate taxon of the Clarion-Clipperton Fracture Zone (CCFZ), an area targeted for mining. We investigated the prevalence of rarity and the explanatory power of environmental parameters with respect to phylogenetic diversity (PD). We found evidence for aggregation and phylogenetic clustering in nematode amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) and the dominant genus Acantholaimus, indicating the influence of environmental filtering, sympatric speciation, affinity for overlapping habitats and facilitation for community structure. PD was associated with abiotic variables such as total organic carbon, chloroplastic pigments equivalents and/or mud content, explaining up to 57% of the observed variability and providing further support of the prominence of environmental structuring forces. Rarity was high throughout, ranging from 64 to 75% unique ASVs. Communities defined by environmental filtering with a prevalence of rarity in the CCFZ suggest taxa of these nodule-bearing abyssal plains will be especially vulnerable to the risk of extinction brought about by the efforts to extract them
