The Role of Education in Self-Sustaining Community Development

    Get PDF
Self-sustaining community development strategies, focused on education as a means for change, have great potential to make an impact on worldwide poverty. Instead of a one-time intervention with results that fade over time, the cyclical structure of participatory development will yield increasing results as time goes on. Teaching the community how to improve itself will increase its ability to deal with future problems, and positively impact women, children, and the environment in developing countries. This philosophy and practical strategy could be effective in any geographic location or culture, focusing on education and the ability of the local people to transform their own communities

Stratospheric pollutant transports by planetary waves and tropical circulations

Radiosonde and U-2 aircraft data from the Intertropical Convergence Zone experiment of July, 1977 were analyzed. The radiosonde data above 15 km was plotted in the form of time-height sections so that wave motions in the meteorological variables (temperature, zonal wind, and meridional wind) could be easily delineated. The results showed the presence of a planetary 16 day Kelvin wave. More significantly, large amplitude gravity waves with vertical wavelengths on the order of 3-6 km were found. Spectral analysis of frequencies showed peaks in meridional wind variance at 2-3 days and 5 days, with the shorter periods stronger at higher altitudes. In the time domain, two instances of organized wave groups propagating upward into the stratosphere were isolated. Associated with one of these wave groups was a region of very large vertical shear in which either turbulence or small scale (10 km wavelength or less) gravity wave activity had been found by the U-2 aircraft

Semiclosed-circuit atmosphere control in a portable recompression chamber

A small portable recompression chamber is described that can be used both to treat a diver for decompression sickness or to transport him to a larger chamber complex. The device can be operated in either open circuit or semiclosed circuit atmospheres, permits two way conversation between patient and attendant, and uses an air injector for circulation of the chamber atmosphere

The Relationship Between Self-Care and Health Status Domains in Thai Patients With Heart Failure

    Get PDF
Background: Little is known about the relationship between self-care in heart failure (HF) and outcomes like health status. The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between HF self-care and Short Form-36 (SF-36) health status domains. Methods and results: A secondary analysis of cross-sectional data collected on 400 HF patients living in southern Thailand was completed using bivariate comparisons and hierarchical multiple regression modeling. Thai population norm-based SF-36 scores and Self-Care of Heart Failure Index (SCHFI) scores were used in the analysis. The sample was in older adulthood (65.7 ± 13.8 years), a slight majority of subjects were male (52%); the majority of subjects (62%) had class III or IV HF. Each health domain was low in this sample compared to the general population. SCHFI maintenance and confidence scores were correlated significantly with each health status domain. SCHFI scores explained a significant amount of variance all domains, both in bivariate and multivariate models, except social functioning. In multivariate models, higher levels of self-care were associated with better health in certain domains, but only when both SCFHI management and confidence were high. Conclusion: Improving HF self-care may be a mechanism through which future interventions can improve health in this population
