    This study aims to investigate and clarify the meaning of reading novels in literary education at upper secondary school through the analysis of an introduction unit for study of writers, which works for encouraging students to come to know writers and their works and to engage in close and wider reading. Taking the Remains of the Day as a starting point gives students a guide to realize “unreliable narrator” and repetition of the word “trust” at near the end of the story. And these realization would help them to read another Ishiguro’s works and find his own style and thoughts

    This paper explores the idea for close reading and visualization of the young adult novel “Brother in the Land” based on the analysis of the booklet After the Bomb : Brother in the Land and Wider Reading for Year 9 and GCSE courses published in 1990 from the English and Media Centre (EMC), London. The booklet offers several ideas for close reading and wider reading, taking “Brother in the Land” as a starting point. The topic, From Book to Screen, which suggests visualization of the beginning of the novel encourages students to do close reading of the film “Threads” as a text for comparative reading. It also reflects EMC’s basic concept for media education

    Food availability estimation of the blood cockle, Anadara granosa (Linnaeus, 1758), from the aquaculture grounds of the Selangor Coast, Malaysia

    Blood cockles, Anadara granosa (Linnaeus, 1758), were collected from the aquaculture grounds (4 stations) of the Selangor coast, Malaysia, and the water quality (water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chlorophyll a) was measured from September 2011 to June 2013. At all stations, the water temperature fluctuated around 30℃. At station C, located at the mouth of the Selangor River, the salinity was occasionally lower than 20 PSU. However, the salinity of the other stations fluctuated around 30 PSU. In addition, at all stations, the content of dissolved oxygen generally fluctuated around 3 mg.L-1 or above, and the turbidity changed irregularly, sometimes exceeding 300 Forumajin Turbidity Units. The chlorophyll a content fluctuated mainly ranging 4-20 µg.L-1 at all stations, and values above 20 µg.L-1 were occasionally observed. The phytopigment content, a food availability indicator, in the digestive gland tissue of the blood cockles collected from all stations fluctuated ranging 30-770 µg.g-1. However, there was no proportional correlation between phytopigment content in the digestive gland and chlorophyll a content at all stations. Therefore, even in a high chlorophyll a content (over 20 µg.L-1) environment, the accumulated phytopigment in the digestive gland was around 290 µg.g-1. In general, these results indicated the cockles were eating a sufficient amount of foods (organic materials including phytoplankton) all year round during the study period. And, the food availability environment in the aquaculture grounds of the Selangor coast was estimated sufficient to grow the blood cockle

    Background: Many studies have used the Wechsler Intelligence Scale (WISC) to examine the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, most studies have been based on profile analysis, not on content analysis. Objective: The objective of the present study was to apply the WISC-IV to clinical assessment of ASD and clarify how the characteristics of the disorder were reflected in specific items. Methods: The study participants were 20 patients aged 5-16 years diagnosed with ASD according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). We recruited 20 patients with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 20 patients with other disorders (neurotic disorders) as controls. We then compared the scores of the ninth item of the WISC-IV ("Comprehension") among the three groups. Results: The differences observed between the ASD vs. the other disorders group were not significant by the standard scoring method. Thus, a two-level scoring method of 0 and ≥1 point was adopted.     The Mobile Asteroid Scout (MASCOT) is a small lander on board the Hayabusa2 mission of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency to the asteroid 162173 Ryugu. Among the instruments on MASCOT is a fluxgate magnetometer, the MASCOT Magnetometer (MasMag). The magnetometer is a lightweight ( ∼280 g∼280 g ) and low power ( ∼0.5 W∼0.5 W ) triaxial fluxgate magnetometer. Magnetic field measurements during the landing period and during the surface operational phase shall provide information about any intrinsic magnetic field of the asteroid and its remanent magnetization.     Giant Pulsations Excited by a Steep Earthward Gradient of Proton Phase Space Density: Arase Observation

    AbstractWe present observational evidence of drift resonance between westward propagating odd mode standing ultralow frequency waves and energetic protons. Compressional ∼13 mHz (Pc4 band) waves and proton flux oscillations at >50 keV were detected at ∼03 hr magnetic local time by the Arase satellite on 15 April 2017. The azimuthal wave number (m number) is estimated to be ∼−50 from ground observations, while the theory of drift resonance gives m ∼− 49 for odd mode waves and ∼110‐keV protons, providing evidence that the drift resonance indeed took place in this event. We also found a steep earthward gradient of proton phase space density, which can quantitatively explain the wave excitation. The observed waves show typical features of giant pulsations (Pgs), regarding local time, m number, and flux oscillations. This study, therefore, has great implications to the field line mode structure and excitation mechanism of Pgs

    Surgical management of infants with mitral valve stenosis or atresia without diminutive ascending aorta

    The surgical strategy in infants with mitral valve stenosis or atresia without diminutive ascending aorta remains to be established, including the potential for biventricular repair as a definitive operation. Our surgical experience of six infants with mitral valve stenosis (4patients) or atresia (2patients) without diminutive ascending aorta was evaluated based on three important factors:left ventricular volume;the nature of the systemic outflow obstruction; and the type of mitral valve anomaly. Two patients with systemic outflow tract diameter less than 65% of normal underwent systemic outflow tract reconstruction, and the other patients with outflow tract diameter more than 68%of normal were able to maintain systemic circulation without repair. Only one patient with mitral valve stenosis without left ventricular outflow tract obstruction underwent a successful open mitral valvotomy as a biventricular repair after first-stage palliation. The left ventricle of the other patients did not grow after first-stage palliation. Due to progressive subaortic narrowing, pulmonary artery banding should be avoided in patients with mitral atresia due to absent atrioventricular connection who are future Fontan candidates. Most patients with this lesion can be expected to become candidates for safe Fontan-type repair
