    Searching for new young stars in the northern hemisphere: The Pisces Moving Group

    Using the kinematically unbiased technique described in Binks, Jeffries & Maxted (2015), we present optical spectra for a further 122 rapidly-rotating (rotation periods <6 days), X-ray active FGK stars, selected from the SuperWASP survey. We identify 17 new examples of young, probably single stars with ages of <200 Myr and provide additional evidence for a new northern hemisphere kinematic association: the Pisces Moving Group (MG). The group consists of 14 lithium-rich G- and K-type stars, that have a dispersion of only ∼3 km s−1 in each Galactic space velocity coordinate. The group members are approximately co-eval in the colour-magnitude diagram, with an age of 30–50 Myr, and have similar, though not identical, kinematics to the Octans-Near MG. stars: low-mass, stars: pre-main-sequenc

    Satellite remote sensing can provide semi-automated monitoring to aid coastal decision-making

    Coastlines are projected to face unprecedented pressures over the next century due to climate change-induced changes in sea level, storm, wave, and tidal regimes. This projection of increasing pressure is driving a reappraisal of existing shoreline management practices, with both science and policy calling for future strategies to work with the natural protection provided by coastal habitats such as salt marshes. However, we currently lack the understanding of long-term ecosystem dynamics required to incorporate these habitats into the definitive predictions of risk relied on in coastal protection planning. Satellite remote sensing has the potential to provide data that could address this knowledge gap with its frequent repeat times and global coverage facilitating the production of high temporal frequency time-series over large areas. This study sought to explore this potential in one of the largest coastal plain estuaries the in the UK, the Severn Estuary. The Random Forest machine learning algorithm was used to develop a time-series of marsh extents across the estuary from 1985 to 2020 in Google Earth Engine, with widths also extracted as a proxy for the marshes’ protective capacity. These changes were monitored in six areas that contained the most significant areas of salt marsh across the estuary. This analysis revealed a significant increasing trend in extent and widths (p 90% and a strong agreement found between the detected widths and those found in previous surveys. These findings demonstrate that satellite remote sensing combined with machine learning has the potential to provide valuable insights into changes in the extents of marshes and therefore their protective capacity. This information can be useful in the coastal planning process, allowing decision-makers to assess the sustainability of existing defences fronted by marshes, as well as allowing them to make informed decisions about the location of restoration schemes

    Integrated and Sustainable Management of Post-industrial Coasts

    The sustainable management of post-industrial coasts is a major emerging issue globally. Along such coasts, there may be a significant legacy of both contaminated land (including historic landfills and non-managed waste disposal) and contaminated sediments in and around urban and industrial areas, which require new strategies for cost-effective and integrated risk management under future sea-level rise and climate change scenarios. Here, we review current approaches to managing contamination in post-industrial coastlines, discuss emerging integrated management strategies (building on low input approaches to sustainable brownfields regeneration) and present an approach and framework for assessing and comparing different scenarios for coastal brownfield regeneration to soft re-use and other end-points. This framework can be applied to explore the opportunities for synergy and realization of wider environmental, economic and societal benefits between coastal protection, dredged material re-use and the management of brownfield land. As such, the approach we propose supports planning and options appraisal to realize maximum benefit and value from integrated coastal management strategies

    Definitions of pulmonary exacerbation in people with cystic fibrosis: a scoping review

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary exacerbations (PExs) are clinically important in people with cystic fibrosis (CF). Multiple definitions have been used for PEx, and this scoping review aimed to identify the different definitions reported in the literature and to ascertain which signs and symptoms are commonly used to define them. METHODS: A search was performed using Embase, MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, Scopus and CINAHL. All publications reporting clinical trials or prospective observational studies involving definitions of PEx in people with CF published in English from January 1990 to December 2022 were included. Data were then extracted for qualitative thematic analysis. RESULTS: A total of 14 039 records were identified, with 7647 titles and abstracts screened once duplicates were removed, 898 reviewed as full text and 377 meeting the inclusion criteria. Pre-existing definitions were used in 148 publications. In 75% of papers, an objective definition was used, while 25% used a subjective definition, which subcategorised into treatment-based definitions (76%) and those involving clinician judgement (24%). Objective definitions were subcategorised into three groups: those based on a combination of signs and symptoms (50%), those based on a predefined combination of signs and symptoms plus the initiation of acute treatment (47%) and scores involving different clinical features each with a specific weighting (3%). The most common signs and symptoms reported in the definitions were, in order, sputum production, cough, lung function, weight/appetite, dyspnoea, chest X-ray changes, chest sounds, fever, fatigue or lethargy and haemoptysis. CONCLUSION: We have identified substantial variation in the definitions of PEx in people with CF reported in the literature. There is a requirement for the development of internationally agreed-upon, standardised and validated age-specific definitions. Such definitions would allow comparison between studies and effective meta-analysis to be performed and are especially important in the highly effective modulator therapy era in CF care

    Synergistic use of Sentinel-2 and UAV-derived data for plant fractional cover distribution mapping of coastal meadows with digital elevation models

    Coastal wetlands provide a range of ecosystem services, yet they are currently under threat from global change impacts. Thus, their monitoring and assessment is vital for evaluating their status, extent and distribution. Remote sensing provides an excellent tool for evaluating coastal ecosystems, whether with small-scale studies using drones or national-/regional-/global-scale studies using satellite-derived data. This study used a fine-scale plant community classification of coastal meadows in Estonia derived from a multispectral camera on board unoccupied aerial vehicles (UAVs) to calculate the plant fractional cover (PFC) in Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI) sensor grids. A random forest (RF) algorithm was trained and tested with vegetation indices (VIs) calculated from the spectral bands extracted from the MSI sensor to predict the PFC. Additional RF models were trained and tested after adding a digital elevation model (DEM). After comparing the models, results show that using DEM with VIs can increase the prediction accuracy of PFC up to 2 times (R2 58%-70%). This suggests the use of ancillary data such as DEM to improve the prediction of empirical machine learning models, providing an appropriate approach to upscale local studies to wider areas for management and conservation purposes

    In the present study, posterior spiracles of laboratory-reared fourth instar larvae of Lutzomyia longipalpis, L. migonei, L. lenti, and L. whitmani (Diptera: Psychodidae) of the State of Ceará, Brazil, were examined under scanning electron microscopy. The number of papillae of spiracles examined varied according to the species examined, but no intraspecific differences were found. The importance of this structure to sand fly larva identification and phylogeny is commented

    Classification of Sharks in the Egyptian Mediterranean Waters Using Morphological and DNA Barcoding Approaches

    The identification of species constitutes the first basic step in phylogenetic studies, biodiversity monitoring and conservation. DNA barcoding, i.e. the sequencing of a short standardized region of DNA, has been proposed as a new tool for animal species identification. The present study provides an update on the composition of shark in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters off Alexandria, since the latest study to date was performed 30 years ago, DNA barcoding was used in addition to classical taxonomical methodologies. Thus, 51 specimen were DNA barcoded for a 667 bp region of the mitochondrial COI gene. Although DNA barcoding aims at developing species identification systems, some phylogenetic signals were apparent in the data. In the neighbor-joining tree, 8 major clusters were apparent, each of them containing individuals belonging to the same species, and most with 100% bootstrap value. This study is the first to our knowledge to use DNA barcoding of the mitochondrial COI gene in order to confirm the presence of species Squalus acanthias, Oxynotus centrina, Squatina squatina, Scyliorhinus canicula, Scyliorhinus stellaris, Mustelus mustelus, Mustelus punctulatus and Carcharhinus altimus in the Egyptian Mediterranean waters.
