Predictive feedback control and Fitts' law
Fittsâ law is a well established empirical formula, known for encapsulating the âspeed-accuracy trade-offâ. For discrete, manual movements from a starting location to a target, Fittsâ law relates movement duration to the distance moved and target size. The widespread empirical success of the formula is suggestive of underlying principles of human movement control. There have been previous attempts to relate Fittsâ law to engineering-type control hypotheses and it has been shown that the law is exactly consistent with the closed-loop step-response of a time-delayed, first-order system. Assuming only the operation of closed-loop feedback, either continuous or intermittent, this paper asks whether such feedback should be predictive or not predictive to be consistent with Fitts law. Since Fittsâ law is equivalent to a time delay separated from a first-order system, known control theory implies that the controller must be predictive. A predictive controller moves the time-delay outside the feedback loop such that the closed-loop response can be separated into a time delay and rational function whereas a non- predictive controller retains a state delay within feedback loop which is not consistent with Fittsâ law. Using sufficient parameters, a high-order non-predictive controller could approximately reproduce Fittsâ law. However, such high-order, ânon-parametricâ controllers are essentially empirical in nature, without physical meaning, and therefore are conceptually inferior to the predictive controller. It is a new insight that using closed-loop feedback, prediction is required to physically explain Fittsâ law. The implication is that prediction is an inherent part of the âspeed-accuracy trade-offâ
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have proven efficacy in the treatment of panic disorder, obsessiveâcompulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. Accumulating data shows that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment can also be efficacious in patients with generalized anxiety disorder. This review summarizes the findings of randomized controlled trials of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, examines the strengths and weaknesses of other therapeutic approaches and considers potential new treatments for patients with this chronic and disabling anxiety disorder
Lack of insurance coverage and urgent care use for asthma: A retrospective cohort study
BACKGROUND: Asthma is a common chronic disease with profound impacts upon individuals and the US health care system. Inadequate health care coverage has been associated with more frequent and severe exacerbations of the disease. We examined the relationship between adequacy of health care coverage and use of emergent care of adults with asthma. METHODS: The 2001 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System was the source of data on adults with current asthma. Bivariate and multiple logistic regression analysis modeled identifiable factors in predicting urgent or emergent care. RESULTS: Key variables included demographics and information on self-reported gaps in health care coverage. The primary outcome was emergency room or urgent care visits for worsening of asthma symptoms. Of 16,234 subjects nationally with current asthma, 2,195 from eight states had valid responses to a supplemental module asking about emergency room use or urgent care visits because of asthma. Thirty four percent of these individuals required such care in the previous year. Having an interruption in health care coverage in the past year was associated with an increased risk of needed urgent or emergent care (crude Odds Ratio [OR] 1.48, 95% confidence intervals [CI]1.03, 2.1). The association was not statistically significant in the adjusted multivariate model including race/ethnicity, employment status, gender, age, education and the ability to identify a primary physician (adjusted OR 1.2, 95% CI 0.8, 1.8). CONCLUSION: This study provides population-level, generalizable evidence of increased risk of exacerbations of asthma in adults and (1) their demographic characteristics, and (2) continuous adequate health care coverage
Formalization of Transform Methods using HOL Light
Transform methods, like Laplace and Fourier, are frequently used for
analyzing the dynamical behaviour of engineering and physical systems, based on
their transfer function, and frequency response or the solutions of their
corresponding differential equations. In this paper, we present an ongoing
project, which focuses on the higher-order logic formalization of transform
methods using HOL Light theorem prover. In particular, we present the
motivation of the formalization, which is followed by the related work. Next,
we present the task completed so far while highlighting some of the challenges
faced during the formalization. Finally, we present a roadmap to achieve our

The first report of Aelurostrongylus falciformis in Norwegian badgers (Meles meles)
The first report of Aelurostrongylus falciformis (Schlegel 1933) in Fennoscandian badgers is described. Routine parasitological examination of nine Norwegian badgers, at the National Veterinary Institute during 2004 and 2005, identified A. falciformis in the terminal airways of five of the animals. The first stage larvae (L1) closely resembled, in size and morphology, those of Angiostrongylus vasorum (Baillet 1866). The diagnosis for both A. falciformis and A. vasorum is frequently based on the identification of L1 in faeces or sputum. The potential for misclassification of an A. falciformis infection as A. vasorum, where larval identification is the only diagnostic method used, is discussed
How large should whales be?
The evolution and distribution of species body sizes for terrestrial mammals
is well-explained by a macroevolutionary tradeoff between short-term selective
advantages and long-term extinction risks from increased species body size,
unfolding above the 2g minimum size induced by thermoregulation in air. Here,
we consider whether this same tradeoff, formalized as a constrained
convection-reaction-diffusion system, can also explain the sizes of fully
aquatic mammals, which have not previously been considered. By replacing the
terrestrial minimum with a pelagic one, at roughly 7000g, the terrestrial
mammal tradeoff model accurately predicts, with no tunable parameters, the
observed body masses of all extant cetacean species, including the 175,000,000g
Blue Whale. This strong agreement between theory and data suggests that a
universal macroevolutionary tradeoff governs body size evolution for all
mammals, regardless of their habitat. The dramatic sizes of cetaceans can thus
be attributed mainly to the increased convective heat loss is water, which
shifts the species size distribution upward and pushes its right tail into
ranges inaccessible to terrestrial mammals. Under this macroevolutionary
tradeoff, the largest expected species occurs where the rate at which
smaller-bodied species move up into large-bodied niches approximately equals

In-cell NMR characterization of the secondary structure populations of a disordered conformation of α-Synuclein within E. coli cells
α-Synuclein is a small protein strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinsonâs disease and related neurodegenerative disorders. We report here the use of in-cell NMR spectroscopy to observe directly the structure and dynamics of this protein within E. coli cells. To improve the accuracy in the measurement of backbone chemical shifts within crowded in-cell NMR spectra, we have developed a deconvolution method to reduce inhomogeneous line broadening within cellular samples. The resulting chemical shift values were then used to evaluate the distribution of secondary structure populations which, in the absence of stable tertiary contacts, are a most effective way to describe the conformational fluctuations of disordered proteins. The results indicate that, at least within the bacterial cytosol, α-synuclein populates a highly dynamic state that, despite the highly crowded environment, has the same characteristics as the disordered monomeric form observed in aqueous solution
High Energy Neutrinos from Quasars
We review and clarify the assumptions of our basic model for neutrino
production in the cores of quasars, as well as those modifications to the model
subsequently made by other workers. We also present a revised estimate of the
neutrino background flux and spectrum obtained using more recent empirical
studies of quasars and their evolution. We compare our results with other
thoeretical calculations and experimental upper limits on the AGN neutrino
background flux. We also estimate possible neutrino fluxes from the jets of
blazars detected recently by the EGRET experiment on the Compton Gamma Ray
Observatory. We discuss the theoretical implications of these estimates.Comment: 14 pg., ps file (includes figures), To be published in Space Science
