    Gender differences in disability after sickness absence with musculoskeletal disorders: five-year prospective study of 37,942 women and 26,307 men

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gender differences in the prevalence and occupational consequences of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are consistently found in epidemiological studies. The study investigated whether gender differences also exist with respect to chronicity, measured as the rate of transition from sickness absence into permanent disability pension (DP).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Prospective national cohort study in Norway including all cases with a spell of sickness absence > eight weeks during 1997 certified with a MSD, 37,942 women and 26,307 men. The cohort was followed-up for five years with chronicity measured as granting of DP as the endpoint. The effect of gender was estimated in the full sample adjusting for sociodemographic factors and diagnostic distribution. Gender specific analyses were performed with the same explanatory variables. Finally, the gender difference was estimated for nine diagnostic subgroups.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The crude rate of DP was 22% for women and 18% for men. After adjusting for all sociodemographic variables, a slightly higher female risk of DP remained. However, additional adjustment for diagnostic distribution removed the gender difference completely. Having children and working full time decreased the DP risk for both genders, whereas low socioeconomic status increased the risk similarly. There was a different age effect as more women obtained a DP below the age of 50. Increased female risk of chronicity remained for myalgia/fibromyalgia, back disorders and "other/unspecified" after relevant adjustments, whereas men with neck disorders were at higher risk of chronicity.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Women with MSDs had a moderately increased risk of chronicity compared to men, when including MSDs with a traumatic background. Possible explanations are lower income, a higher proportion belonging to diagnostic subgroups with poor prognosis, and a younger age of chronicity among women. When all sociodemographic and diagnostic variables were adjusted for, no gender difference remained, except for some diagnostic subgroups.</p

    A sequence that directs transcriptional initiation in yeast

    While RNA polymerase II of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae initiates transcription at discrete sites, these sites are located over a wide range of distances from the TATA box for different genes. This variability has led to a number of proposals for consensus sequences located at the initiation site which, in conjunction with the TATA box, would direct initiation. We tested this hypothesis via oligonucleotide-directed mutagenesis, by placing the sequence CAAG, a member of one of these consensus sequences, upstream of the coding sequence of the CYC7 gene at a site at which initiation does not occur. The distance between the TATA sequence and this putative initiation site was varied by inserting it into the wild-type gene and three deletion mutants. The results demonstrated that this sequence can serve as an initiation site when located 49, 77, or 106 bp from the TATA sequence, but not when located 30 bp away.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/46971/1/294_2004_Article_BF00312597.pd

    Genomic organization, sequence analysis and expression of all five genes encoding the small subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase from tomato

    We have cloned and sequenced all five members of the gene family for the small subunit (rbcS) of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase from tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum cv. VFNT LA 1221 cherry line. Two of the five genes, designated Rbcs-1 and Rbcs-2 , are present as single genes at individual loci. Three genes, designated Rbcs-3A, Rbcs-3B and Rbcs-3C , are organized in a tandem array within 10 kb at a third independent locus. The Rbcs-2 gene contains three introns; all the other members of the tomato gene family contain two introns. The coding sequence of Rbcs-1 differs by 14.0% from that of Rbcs-2 and by 13.3% from that of Rbcs-3 genes. Rbcs-2 shows 10.4% divergence from Rbcs-3 . The exon and intron sequences of Rbcs-3A are identical to those of Rbcs-3C , and differ by 1.9% from those of Rbcs-3B . Nucleotide sequence analysis suggests that the five rbcS genes encode four different precursors, and three different mature polypeptides. S 1 nuclease mapping of the 5′ end of rbcS mRNAs revealed that the mRNA leader sequences vary in length from 8 to 75 nucleotides. Northern analysis using gene-specific oligonucleotide probes from the 3′ non-coding region of each gene reveals a four to five-fold difference among the five genes in maximal steady-state mRNA levels in leaves.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/47566/1/438_2004_Article_BF00329650.pd

    Design, synthesis and activity study of tyrosinase encapsulated silica aerogel (TESA) biosensor for phenol removal in aqueous solution

    Tyrosinase encapsulated silica aerogel (TESA) was synthesized via an alcohol-free colloidal sol–gel route at room temperature and at neutral pH. Characterization on TESA indicated that 98% of enzyme was effectively loaded and located inside the aerogel network. TESA without solvent extraction showed higher tyrosinase activity than TESA extracted by amyl acetate/acetone (v/v:1/1). Stability of tyrosinase in TESA was enhanced towards extreme temperature, acidic and basic conditions. Optimization study indicates that 500 U enzyme/g silica aerogel; aged for 2 days, showed superior performance in the oxidation of catechol. The activity of TESA was remarkably enhanced; which was active at a wider temperature (up to 80 °C) and pH range (4–9). In contrast, free tyrosinase was totally inactive at these pH values and temperature >55 °C. TESA successfully removed about 90% of phenol in aqueous solution after 3 h of contact time with excellent reusability
