An exposition of constructivism account to construct knowledge and to create meaningful learning environment for teacher education

    Get PDF
Since last ten years, it becomes indispensable to talk about constructivism in relation to the teaching and learning process. Yet the term of constructivism is still not well defined and contradicts. Generally constructivism refers to a set of views about how individuals learn and about how those who help them to learn ought to facilitate, which in this paper referred as Constructivist Learning Account (CLA). CLA holds an assumption that learners actively construct their own sets of meanings and understandings; knowledge is not a mere copy of the external world, nor is knowledge acquired by passive absorption or by simple transference from one person (educator) to another (a learner or knower). Clearly, knowledge is constructed not acquired. CLA also stresses that we cannot be certain that any two individuals will construct the same understandings. Even if they use the same linguistic formulations to express what they have learned, their deep understandings might be quite different. Hence, a better understanding of constructive learning accounts as a component of a long life learning process and how teacher education programme should engage with it is needed to create a meaningful learning environment

    Get PDF
The presence of sulfide in wastewater is by the result of biological, physical and chemical processes which mostly takes place in the submerged portion of the sewage collection networks. The rate of sulfide generation depends on several factors including pH, temperature, concentration of organic materials and nutrients, sulfate concentrations, collection system parameters and performance, and the oxidation reduction potential (ORP). Dissolved sulfide could affect biological processes in wastewater treatment plants. Other problems by hydrogen sulfide emission were corrosion of sewer concrete pipes, release of obnoxious odors to the atmosphere, toxicity to sewer workers or human health, water supply and environment pollution, and economic effects. In this research, the main objective was to remove the sulfide content that present in the petrochemical process plant using Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation (CWAO) method. This research was done initially by collecting the wastewater form petrochemical plant. It was followed by the developement of the experimental system in the laboratory to run the preliminary study and the data obtained was use in screening study to detemine the best condition of sulfide removal. The best condition suggested then was optimized using Central Composite Design (CCD) method as a response surface methodology. Three independent factors such as temperature, residence time and catalyst loading that affect the degradation of sulfide are investigated using the 23 factorial analysis. Some of the independent factors were shown to have significant effect on sulfide removals (%). After removing the nonsignificant variables from the model, response surface method was used to obtain the optimum conditions and optimized using central composite design. 13 experiments with 2 factors were designed. These factors (or variables) were: the temperature and the residence time. A full-quadratic polynomial equation between the percentage of sulfide removal (as the response) and the studied parameters are established. The optimum ranges of variables were: 42.5oC for the temperature and 12.5 minutes for the residence time

The appreciation of Malaysian Philosophy of Education among academics and how it relates to their productivity

    Get PDF
This paper reveals the valuable perspectives of Malaysian academics in assessing the Malaysian Philosophy of Education (MPE) in terms of how successful its implementation is on Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in Malaysia. This research is also about productivity achievement. The researcher draws eight major conclusions in answering the main research questions. Firstly, the research argues that about 35%, 30% and 12% of the respondents have fair, good and very good knowledge about MPE respectively. All MPE elements are considered well implemented, where each of them has an average rating of more than 3 in an increasing scale of 1-5 (least to most). The most frequent constraint among the academics for MPE to be implemented in HEI is the significant burdens that are time consuming faced by them. Then, the most productive role among the academics is teaching, compared to research and administration. It is also argued that different factors give significant effect to different academic roles. An interesting figure of approximately 59% of the professors were thought to have been appointed on merit (deserve their appointment). There is a significant relationship between implementation success of MPE and administration productivity. Lastly, there is a significant relationship between the perspective of academics concerning professorial appointments and the successful implementation of MPE in HEI. However, the last two have modest correlation values in general. In conclusion, the study highlights the impacts of MPE in HEI alongside the possible constraints, and the outcomes of academics’ productivity by looking at their roles and the factors which affect their productivity. These two approaches could bring valuable positive indicators of the performance of current HEI in Malaysia as a whole

Optimization and in silico analysis of cold-adapted lipase from an antarctic pseudomonas sp strain AMS8 reaction in Triton X-100 reverse micelles

A moderate yield of a purified enzyme can be achieved by using the simple technique of reverse micellar extraction (RME). RME is a liquid–liquid extraction method that uses a surfactant and an organic solvent to extract biomolecules. Instead of traditional chromatographic purification methods, which are tedious and expensive, RME using the nonionic surfactant Triton X-100 and toluene is used as an alternative purification technique to purify a recombinant cold-adapted lipase, AMS8. Various process parameters were optimized to maximize the activity recovery of the AMS8 lipase. The optimal conditions were found to be 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7, 0.125 M NaCl, and 0.07 M Triton X-100 in toluene at 10 °C. Approximately 56% of the lipase activity was successfully recovered. Structural analysis of the lipase in a reverse micelle (RM) was performed using an in silico approach. The predicted model of AMS8 lipase was simulated in the Triton X-100/toluene reverse micelles from 5 to 40 °C. The lid 2 was slightly opened at 10 °C. However, the secondary structure of AMS8 was most affected in the non-catalytic domain compared to the catalytic domain, with an increased coil conformation. These results suggest that an AMS8 lipase can be extracted using Triton X-100/water/toluene micelles at low temperature. This RME approach will be an important tool for the downstream processing of recombinant cold-adapted lipase

Legal framework for theft of trade secrets and corporate espionage in Malaysia: adhering to the trans pacific partnership agreement (TPPA)

    Get PDF
Theft of trade secrets and corporate espionage threaten innovation, growth, development and investment of business entities and national economy globally. Civil remedies alone are insufficient to protect trade secrets from this growing threat. As a measure to address this issue, the TPPA requires signatory countries to criminalize theft of trade secrets and corporate espionage. In Malaysia civil remedies under the common law of breach of confidence and employment contract, protects the owner’s right against any misappropriation of trade secrets. However there is no law to criminalize theft of trade secrets and corporate espionage in Malaysia. This research is undertaken to establish a legal framework to criminalize theft of trade secrets and corporate espionage apart from analyzing the protection of trade secrets in Malaysi

Teachers hold high responsibilities where their job scopes require high sense of trustworthiness and sincerity. As a role model, teachers should show a good example to students in order to produce balanced human capital as has been objectified by the National Education Philosophy. In order to achieve this objective, teachers need to have high emotional stability. This paper will discuss the importance of teachers' emotional stability in influencing language teaching in secondary schools. This is because teachers' emotional stability is very important as it will influence students' level of achievement in language learning. Those aspects will be examined deeply through the discussion of this study by referring to the adaptation of Goleman's (1998) quetionnaires that were based. On various dimensions such as self awarenss, self control, motivation, emphathy, and social skills. The awareness of this importance will ensure teachers' emotional stability is given serious emphasis as teachers function as individuals who contribute towards the success and excellence of students

Preservice teachers' voices while learning to teach

An attempt to facilitate pre service teachers learning which is attuned with their learning needs raises questions regarding how pre service teachers learn to teach. As learning to teach is developmental and a lifelong process, it puts heavy demands of a cognitive, affective and performance nature upon the pre service teachers (PSTs). It is a complex process as information that is useful to experienced teachers may not have the same value to the beginners (Arends, 2004). An understanding of the process of learning to teach may help to clarify the role of teacher education programmes especially at the pre-service level (Feiman-Nemser and Remillard, 1996). For instance, what do PSTs come to know about teaching and learning? How in the process of becoming teachers do PSTs replace notions about teaching and learning with practical knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, learners, contexts, and learning that can inform their teaching judgments and actions? This paper discusses finding from a study conducted at a university department of educational studies in England. The study focused on how pre service teacher develop their knowledge of teaching throughout their teaching practice period

    Get PDF
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine and often diagnosed in childhood or early adolescence. In this study, the risk factors for scoliosis in elementary school children is investigate based on age, backpack weight and gender. There are 260 children participated in this study from aged 7 up to 12 years old. Scoliometer is used to measure the angle of trunk rotation (ATR) on Adam Forward Bending Test. Statistical analysis of analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to determine the characteristic difference of ATR readings on the risk factors for scoliosis. Significant results with P-value less than 0.001 are found among ATR readings on a linear combination of risk factors for scoliosis of age and backpack weight. Then, the risk factors for scoliosis are classified among elementary school children using Decision Tree and K-Nearest Neighbor. The classification results shown that both Decision Tree method produced highest classification percentage up to 98.08%. This finding indicates that age and backpack weight are significant as the risk factors for scoliosis
