cDNA Cloning of Biologically Active Chicken Interleukin-18
By searching a chicken EST database, we identified a cDNA clone that appeared to contain the entire open
reading frame (ORF) of chicken interleukin-18 (ChIL-18). The encoded protein consists of 198 amino acids
and exhibits approximately 30% sequence identity to IL-18 of humans and various others mammals. Sequence
comparisons reveals a putative caspase-1 cleavage site at aspartic acid 29 of the primary translation product,
indicating that mature ChIL-18 might consist of 169 amino acids. Bacterially expressed ChIL-18 in which the
N-terminal 29 amino acids of the putative precursor molecule were replaced by a histidine tag induced the
synthesis of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in cultured primary chicken spleen cells, indicating that the recombinant
protein is biologically active

The Isotope Effect in Superconductors
We review some aspects of the isotope effect (IE) in superconductors. Our
focus is on the influence of factors not related to the pairing mechanism.
After summarizing the main results obtained for conventional superconductors,
we review the effect of magnetic impurities, the proximity effect and
non-adiabaticity on the value of the isotope coefficient (IC). We discuss the
isotope effect of and of the penetration depth . The theory is
applied to conventional and high- superconductors. Experimental results
obtained for YBaCuO related materials (Zn and
Pr-substituted as well as oxygen-depleted systems) and for
LaSrCuO are discussed.Comment: 31 pages, 10 figures. Review article to appear in "Pair Correlation

Universal renormalization-group dynamics at the onset of chaos in logistic maps and nonextensive statistical mechanics
We uncover the dynamics at the chaos threshold of the logistic
map and find it consists of trajectories made of intertwined power laws that
reproduce the entire period-doubling cascade that occurs for . We corroborate this structure analytically via the Feigenbaum
renormalization group (RG) transformation and find that the sensitivity to
initial conditions has precisely the form of a -exponential, of which we
determine the -index and the -generalized Lyapunov coefficient . Our results are an unequivocal validation of the applicability of the
non-extensive generalization of Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) statistical mechanics to
critical points of nonlinear maps.Comment: Revtex, 3 figures. Updated references and some general presentation

Justification of the coupled-mode approximation for a nonlinear elliptic problem with a periodic potential
Coupled-mode systems are used in physical literature to simplify the
nonlinear Maxwell and Gross-Pitaevskii equations with a small periodic
potential and to approximate localized solutions called gap solitons by
analytical expressions involving hyperbolic functions. We justify the use of
the one-dimensional stationary coupled-mode system for a relevant elliptic
problem by employing the method of Lyapunov--Schmidt reductions in Fourier
space. In particular, existence of periodic/anti-periodic and decaying
solutions is proved and the error terms are controlled in suitable norms. The
use of multi-dimensional stationary coupled-mode systems is justified for
analysis of bifurcations of periodic/anti-periodic solutions in a small
multi-dimensional periodic potential.Comment: 18 pages, no figure
Increasing the User Experience in Autonomous Driving through different Feedback Modalities
Within the ongoing process of defining autonomous driving solutions, experience design may represent an important interface between humans and the autonomous vehicle. This paper presents an empirical study that uses different ways of unimodal communication in autonomous driving to communicate awareness and intent of autonomous vehicles. The goal is to provide recommendations for feedback solutions within holistic autonomous driving experiences. 22 test subjects took part in four autonomous, simulated virtual reality shuttle rides and were presented with different unimodal feedback in the form of light, sound, visualisation, text and vibration. The empirical study showed that, compared to a no-feedback baseline ride, light, and visualisation were able to create a positive user experience
Distinct Responses to Menin Inhibition and Synergy with DOT1L Inhibition in KMT2A-Rearranged Acute Lymphoblastic and Myeloid Leukemia
Pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) exhibit favorable survival rates. However, for AML and ALL patients carrying KMT2A gene translocations clinical outcome remains unsatisfactory. Key players in KMT2A-fusion-driven leukemogenesis include menin and DOT1L. Recently, menin inhibitors like revumenib have garnered attention for their potential therapeutic efficacy in treating KMT2A-rearranged acute leukemias. However, resistance to menin inhibition poses challenges, and identifying which patients would benefit from revumenib treatment is crucial. Here, we investigated the in vitro response to revumenib in KMT2A-rearranged ALL and AML. While ALL samples show rapid, dose-dependent induction of leukemic cell death, AML responses are much slower and promote myeloid differentiation. Furthermore, we reveal that acquired resistance to revumenib in KMT2A-rearranged ALL cells can occur either through the acquisition of MEN1 mutations or independently of mutations in MEN1. Finally, we demonstrate significant synergy between revumenib and the DOT1L inhibitor pinometostat in KMT2A-rearranged ALL, suggesting that such drug combinations represent a potent therapeutic strategy for these patients. Collectively, our findings underscore the complexity of resistance mechanisms and advocate for precise patient stratification to optimize the use of menin inhibitors in KMT2A-rearranged acute leukemia.</p
Fuchsian convex bodies: basics of Brunn--Minkowski theory
The hyperbolic space \H^d can be defined as a pseudo-sphere in the
Minkowski space-time. In this paper, a Fuchsian group is a group of
linear isometries of the Minkowski space such that \H^d/\Gamma is a compact
manifold. We introduce Fuchsian convex bodies, which are closed convex sets in
Minkowski space, globally invariant for the action of a Fuchsian group. A
volume can be associated to each Fuchsian convex body, and, if the group is
fixed, Minkowski addition behaves well. Then Fuchsian convex bodies can be
studied in the same manner as convex bodies of Euclidean space in the classical
Brunn--Minkowski theory. For example, support functions can be defined, as
functions on a compact hyperbolic manifold instead of the sphere.
The main result is the convexity of the associated volume (it is log concave
in the classical setting). This implies analogs of Alexandrov--Fenchel and
Brunn--Minkowski inequalities. Here the inequalities are reversed
Itinerant electron metamagnetism in LaCoSi
The strongly exchange enhanced Pauli paramagnet LaCoSi is found to
exhibit an itinerant metamagnetic phase transition with indications for
metamagnetic quantum criticality. Our investigation comprises magnetic,
specific heat, and NMR measurements as well as ab-initio electronic structure
calculations. The critical field is about 3.5 T for and 6 T for , which is the lowest value ever found for rare earth intermetallic
compounds. In the ferromagnetic state there appears a moment of about 0.2

Milagrito: a TeV air-shower array
Milagrito, a large, covered water-Cherenkov detector, was the world's first
air-shower-particle detector sensitive to cosmic gamma rays below 1 TeV. It
served as a prototype for the Milagro detector and operated from February 1997
to May 1998. This paper gives a description of Milagrito, a summary of the
operating experience, and early results that demonstrate the capabilities of
this technique.Comment: 38 pages including 24 figure
