Stories as personal coaching philosophy
The importance of coaches developing and articulating a personal coaching philosophy which encapsulates their values and beliefs is widely recognised. Yet it is also acknowledged that many coaches resist what appears an abstract task or find it to be of limited use in their day-to-day practice. In this paper we explore the potential of an alternative approach to developing and articulating a personal coaching philosophy: storytelling. Following a discussion of the potential of stories, we present a story written by one coach which expresses her personal philosophy in a way that is firmly rooted in her coaching practice. Storytelling approaches, we suggest, can reveal the connections between abstract/general philosophy and the personal embodied experience of coaching. We reflect on the possibilities and problems of using stories as philosophy and offer some suggestions for how coaches may be supported in developing their coaching philosophy through storytelling
Gender Identity: Challenges to Accessing Social and Health Care Services for Lesbians in Nepal
Literature about same-sex love and sexuality in Nepal is rare. However, limited anecdotal evidence on these issues signals that the health and social care needs of lesbians in Nepal are high. This qualitative study explores the challenges faced by lesbians in Nepal in accessing health and social services. In-depth interviews carried out with fifteen lesbians found that Nepalese lesbians face many challenges from families and society which result in a stressful life, homelessness and forced and unwanted relationships and marriage, including self-harming behaviours. They often face discrimination and harassment when coming out at public administration and social institutions. Hence, most lesbians of Nepal prefer not to disclose their sexual identity due to the fear of becoming isolated and not getting quality health care services
The Minimal Moose for a Little Higgs
Recently a new class of theories of electroweak symmetry breaking have been
constructed. These models, based on deconstruction and the physics of theory
space, provide the first alternative to weak-scale supersymmetry with naturally
light Higgs fields and perturbative new physics at the TeV scale. The Higgs is
light because it is a pseudo-Goldstone boson, and the quadratically divergent
contributions to the Higgs mass are cancelled by new TeV scale ``partners'' of
the {\em same} statistics. In this paper we present the minimal theory space
model of electroweak symmetry breaking, with two sites and four link fields,
and the minimal set of fermions. There are very few parameters and degrees of
freedom beyond the Standard Model. Below a TeV, we have the Standard Model with
two light Higgs doublets, and an additional complex scalar weak triplet and
singlet. At the TeV scale, the new particles that cancel the 1-loop quadratic
divergences in the Higgs mass are revealed. The entire Higgs potential needed
for electroweak symmetry breaking--the quartic couplings as well as the
familiar negative mass squared--can be generated by the top Yukawa coupling,
providing a novel link between the physics of flavor and electroweak symmetry
breaking.Comment: 15 pages. References added. Included clarifying comments on the
origin of quartic couplings, and on power-counting. More elegant model for
generating Higgs potential from top Yukawa coupling presente
Breaking CPT by mixed non-commutativity
The mixed component of the non-commutative parameter \theta_{\mu M}, where
\mu = 0,1,2,3 and M is an extra dimensional index may violate four-dimensional
CPT invariance. We calculate one and two-loop induced couplings of \theta_{\mu
5} with the four-dimensional axial vector current and with the CPT odd dim=6
operators starting from five-dimensional Yukawa and U(1) theories. The
resulting bounds from clock comparison experiments place a stringent constraint
on \theta_{\mu 5}, |\theta_{\mu 5}|^{-1/2} > 5\times 10^{11} GeV. The orbifold
projection and/or localization of fermions on a 3-brane lead to CPT-conserving
physics, in which case the constraints on \theta{\mu 5} are softened.Comment: 4 pages, latex, 1 figur
Surface Instability in Windblown Sand
We investigate the formation of ripples on the surface of windblown sand
based on the one-dimensional model of Nishimori and Ouchi [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71,
197 (1993)], which contains the processes of saltation and grain relaxation. We
carry out a nonlinear analysis to determine the propagation speed of the
restabilized ripple patterns, and the amplitudes and phases of their first,
second, and third harmonics. The agreement between the theory and our numerical
simulations is excellent near the onset of instability. We also determine the
Eckhaus boundary, outside which the steady ripple patterns are unstable.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
Property for noncommutative universal lattices
We establish a new spectral criterion for Kazhdan's property which is
applicable to a large class of discrete groups defined by generators and
relations. As the main application, we prove property for the groups
, where and is an arbitrary finitely generated
associative ring. We also strengthen some of the results on property for
Kac-Moody groups from a paper of Dymara and Januszkiewicz (Invent. Math 150
(2002)).Comment: 47 pages; final versio
Diffusion in supersonic, turbulent, compressible flows
We investigate diffusion in supersonic, turbulent, compressible flows.
Supersonic turbulence can be characterized as network of interacting shocks. We
consider flows with different rms Mach numbers and where energy necessary to
maintain dynamical equilibrium is inserted at different spatial scales. We find
that turbulent transport exhibits super-diffusive behavior due to induced bulk
motions. In a comoving reference frame, however, diffusion behaves normal and
can be described by mixing length theory extended into the supersonic regime.Comment: 11 pages, incl. 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physical
