    Substance P regulates puberty onset and fertility in the female mouse

    Puberty is a tightly regulated process that leads to reproductive capacity. Kiss1 neurons are crucial in this process by stimulating GnRH, yet how Kiss1 neurons are regulated remains unknown. Substance P (SP), an important neuropeptide in pain perception, induces gonadotropin release in adult mice in a kisspeptin-dependent manner. Here, we assessed whether SP, through binding to its receptor NK1R (neurokinin 1 receptor), participates in the timing of puberty onset and fertility in the mouse. We observed that 1) selective NK1R agonists induce gonadotropin release in prepubertal females; 2) the expression of Tac1 (encoding SP) and Tacr1 (NK1R) in the arcuate nucleus is maximal before puberty, suggesting increased SP tone; 3) repeated exposure to NK1R agonists prepubertally advances puberty onset; and 4) female Tac1-/- mice display delayed puberty; moreover, 5) SP deficiency leads to subfertility in females, showing fewer corpora lutea and antral follicles and leading to decreased litter size. Thus, our findings support a role for SP in the stimulation of gonadotropins before puberty, acting via Kiss1 neurons to stimulate GnRH release, and its involvement in the attainment of full reproductive capabilities in female mice.     Breaking CPT by mixed non-commutativity

    The mixed component of the non-commutative parameter \theta_{\mu M}, where \mu = 0,1,2,3 and M is an extra dimensional index may violate four-dimensional CPT invariance. We calculate one and two-loop induced couplings of \theta_{\mu 5} with the four-dimensional axial vector current and with the CPT odd dim=6 operators starting from five-dimensional Yukawa and U(1) theories. The resulting bounds from clock comparison experiments place a stringent constraint on \theta_{\mu 5}, |\theta_{\mu 5}|^{-1/2} > 5\times 10^{11} GeV. The orbifold projection and/or localization of fermions on a 3-brane lead to CPT-conserving physics, in which case the constraints on \theta{\mu 5} are softened.Comment: 4 pages, latex, 1 figur

However, few research efforts have been dedicated to this evaluation and even less to the elaboration of a management tool. This paper adopts an engineering perspective to develop a performance assessment approach in this field. Theoretically, this communication (1) mobilizes the methodology of engineering research to build a measurement system of the IS maturity in relation to the economic, social and environmental performance, (2) extends the researches about the sustainable balanced scorecard (SBSC) to the field of IS governance. Practically, this study provides organizations with a global approach to this complex phenomenon as well as a guide to assess it.     Natural Theories of Ultra-Low Mass PNGB's: Axions and Quintessence

    We consider the Wilson Line PNGB which arises in a U(1)^N gauge theory, abstracted from a latticized, periodically compactified extra dimension U(1). Planck scale breaking of the PNGB's global symmetry is suppressed, providing natural candidates for the axion and quintessence. We construct an explicit model in which the axion may be viewed as the 5th component of the U(1)_Y gauge field in a 1+4 latticized periodically compactified extra dimension.     D-brane Solitons in Supersymmetric Sigma-Models

    Massive D=4 N=2 supersymmetric sigma models typically admit domain wall (Q-kink) solutions and string (Q-lump) solutions, both preserving 1/2 supersymmetry. We exhibit a new static 1/4 supersymmetric `kink-lump' solution in which a string ends on a wall, and show that it has an effective realization as a BIon of the D=4 super DBI-action. It is also shown to have a time-dependent Q-kink-lump generalization which reduces to the Q-lump in a limit corresponding to infinite BI magnetic field. All these 1/4 supersymmetric sigma-model solitons are shown to be realized in M-theory as calibrated, or `Q-calibrated', M5-branes in an M-monopole background.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, Late

    Generalized Second Law of Thermodynamics on the Event Horizon for Interacting Dark Energy

    Here we are trying to find the conditions for the validity of the generalized second law of thermodynamics (GSLT) assuming the first law of thermodynamics on the event horizon in both cases when the FRW universe is filled with interacting two fluid system- one in the form of cold dark matter and the other is either holographic dark energy or new age graphic dark energy. Using the recent observational data we have found that GSLT holds both in quintessence era as well as in phantom era for new age graphic model while for holographic dark energy GSLT is valid only in phantom era.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

Here we consider homogeneous and isotropic model of the universe filled with perfect fluid in one case and in another case holographic model of the universe has been considered. In the third case the matter in the universe is taken in the form of non-interacting two fluid system as holographic dark energy and dust.     Antiangiogenic therapy by local intracerebral microinfusion improves treatment efficiency and survival in an orthotopic human glioblastoma model

    Targeting active angiogenesis, which is a major hallmark of malignant gliomas, is a potential therapeutic approach. For effective inhibition of tumor-induced neovascularization, antiangiogenic compounds have to be delivered in sufficient quantities over a sustained period of time. The short biological half-life of many antiangiogenic inhibitors and the impaired intratumoral blood flow create logistical difficulties that make it necessary to optimize drug delivery for the treatment of malignant gliomas. In this study, we compared the effects of endostatin delivered by daily systemic administration or local intracerebral microinfusion on established intracranial U87 human glioblastoma xenografts in nude mice. Noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging methods were used to assess treatment effects and additional histopathological analysis of tumor volume, microvessel density, proliferation, and apoptosis rate were performed. Three weeks of local intracerebral microinfusion of endostatin (2 mg/kg/day) led to 74% (P < 0.05) reduction of tumor volumes with decreased microvessel densities (33.5%, P < 0.005) and a 3-fold increased tumor cell apoptosis (P < 0.002). Systemic administration of a 10-fold higher amount of endostatin (20 mg/kg/day) did not result in a reduction of tumor volume nor in an increase of tumor cell apoptosis despite a significant decrease of microvessel densities (26.9%, P < 0.005). Magnetic resonance imaging was used to successfully demonstrate treatment effects. The local microinfusion of human endostatin significantly increased survival when administered at 2 mg/kg/day and was prolonged further when the dose was increased to 12 mg/kg/day. Our results indicate that the local intracerebral microinfusion of antiangiogenic compounds is an effective way to overcome the logistical problems of inhibiting glioma-induced angiogenesis

    Evidence of Final-State Suppression of High-p_T Hadrons in Au + Au Collisions Using d + Au Measurements at RHIC

    Transverse momentum spectra of charged hadrons with pT<{p_{T} <} 6 GeV/c have been measured near mid-rapidity (0.2 <η<< \eta < 1.4) by the PHOBOS experiment at RHIC in Au + Au and d + Au collisions at sNN=200GeV{\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}} = \rm {200 GeV}}. The spectra for different collision centralities are compared to p+pˉ{p + \bar{p}} collisions at the same energy. The resulting nuclear modification factor for central Au + Au collisions shows evidence of strong suppression of charged hadrons in the high-pTp_{T} region (>2{>2} GeV/c). In contrast, the d + Au nuclear modification factor exhibits no suppression of the high-pTp_{T} yields. These measurements suggest a large energy loss of the high-pTp_{T} particles in the highly interacting medium created in the central Au + Au collisions.
