    Marked dietary differences between sympatric feral rock doves and rock pigeons

    Although feral rock doves Columba livia and rock pigeons C. guineafly daily in mixed flocks between roosting and nesting sites in Cape Town, South Africa, they feed separately in farmlands north of the city during the austral summer. Examination of the crop contents of 32 feral rock doves and 48 rock pigeons revealed that 28 (88%) of the feral rock doves had fed on processed cereals, whereas all 48 (100%) of the rock pigeons had eaten whole wheat. The processed cereals were obtained from dairy cattle feedlots, whereas the whole wheat is waste, found within the stubble. There is equal nutritional advantage from feeding on both food types, and feral rock doves have no apparent preference for either food type. This differential feeding behaviour suggests resource partitioning, and that introduced feral rock doves do not displace indigenous rock pigeons from summer food sources in the south-western Cape Province

    The breeding biology of the greywing francolĂ­n Francolinus africanus and its implications for hunting and management

    We studied the breeding biology of the greywing francolín Francolinus africanus on the Stormberg Plateau of the eastern Cape Province, South Africa during 1988–1991. Timing of breeding, nesting behaviour, clutch size, egg size, and clutch survival rates were recorded and compared with published and unpublished information from Natal, the eastern Orange Free State and south-western Cape Province. The greywing breeds during the austral summer throughout its range, with peak laying activity during August-November. However, the nesting period is contracted in the south-western Cape, where it starts about one month earlier and ends three months earlier than in the eastern Orange Free State and the eastern Cape, where laying was recorded from August to March. The greywing's breeding season is more consistently positively correlated with measures of environmental variation in the summer rainfall region than in the winter rainfall region. Flushed single birds were the best indicators of nesting sites. Clutches were incubated by hens only. Mean clutch size was 5,5 (SD = 1,2) and mean egg dimensions were 39,9 mm × 30,1 mm (SD = 1,9 and 0,9). Incubation period was 21,7 days (SD = 0,5), hatching success (the probability that eggs present at hatching time actually produced living young) was 90% and clutch survival rate (the probability that a clutch will survive 21,7 days of incubation) was 31%. Hunting seasons for the greywing should be from 15 April to 31 July in the summer rainfall region and from 1 April to 30 June in the winter rainfall region. Veld burning should cease at the end of August throughout the greywing's range so that disturbance of breeding birds is minimized

    Temporal and spatial patterns of abundance and breeding activity of Namaqua sandgrouse in South Africa

    We examined various measures of temporal and spatial patterns of abundance and breeding activity of Namaqua sandgrouse Pterocles namaqua (presumably mostly for P. n. furvus) in South Africa. Bird-atlas maps indicating reporting-rates and extensive-counts showed that the majority of Namaqua sandgrouse concentrate in Bushmanland, in the north-western Cape Province, from December to March. From April to July the sandgrouse move north and east of Bushmanland and apparently return to Bushmanland from August to November. This west-east movement occurs at a relatively constant rate of 30-50 km per month. Only 15% of the sandgrouse ringed at an estate within the eastern part of this species range returned the following winter. Follicle diameter and brood-patch measurements increased significantly from July to August, at the time when the majority of birds leave the estate. Belly-soaking was more prevalent in early summer in Bushmanland than in any season in the east. South African populations of Namaqua sandgrouse are partial migrants which breed primarily in early summer (October - November) in Bushmanland

    Vortex states in superconducting rings

    The superconducting state of a thin superconducting disk with a hole is studied within the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory in which the demagnetization effect is accurately taken into account. We find that the flux through the hole is not quantized, the superconducting state is stabilized with increasing size of the hole for fixed radius of the disk, and a transition to a multi-vortex state is found if the disk is sufficiently large. Breaking the circular summetry through a non central location of the hole in the disk enhances the multi-vortex state.Comment: 11 pages, 23 figures (postscript).     Geographical and climatic limits of needle types of one- and two-needled pinyon pines

    Aim The geographical extent and climatic tolerances of one- and two-needled pinyon pines (Pinus subsect. Cembroides) are the focus of questions in taxonomy, palaeoclimatology and modelling of future distributions. The identification of these pines, traditionally classified by one- versus two-needled fascicles, is complicated by populations with both one- and two-needled fascicles on the same tree, and the description of two more recently described one-needled varieties: the fallax-type and californiarum-type. Because previous studies have suggested correlations between needle anatomy and climate, including anatomical plasticity reflecting annual precipitation, we approached this study at the level of the anatomy of individual pine needles rather than species. Location Western North America. Methods We synthesized available and new data from field and herbarium collections of needles to compile maps of their current distributions across western North America. Annual frequencies of needle types were compared with local precipitation histories for some stands. Historical North American climates were modeled on a c. 1-km grid using monthly temperature and precipitation values. A geospatial model (ClimLim), which analyses the effect of climate modulated physiological and ecosystem processes, was used to rank the importance of seasonal climate variables in limiting the distributions of anatomical needle types. Results The pinyon needles were classified into four distinct types based upon the number of needles per fascicle, needle thickness and the number of stomatal rows and resin canals. The individual needles fit well into four categories of needle types, whereas some trees exhibit a mixture of two needle types. Trees from central Arizona containing a mixture of Pinus edulis and fallax-type needles increased their percentage of fallax-type needles following dry years. All four needle types occupy broader geographical regions with distinctive precipitation regimes. Pinus monophylla and californiarum-type needles occur in regions with high winter precipitation. Pinus edulis and fallax-type needles are found in regions with high monsoon precipitation. Areas supporting californiarum-type and fallax-type needle distributions are additionally characterized by a more extreme May–June drought. Main conclusions These pinyon needle types seem to reflect the amount and seasonality of precipitation. The single needle fascicle characterizing the fallax type may be an adaptation to early summer or periodic drought, while the single needle of Pinus monophylla may be an adaptation to summer–autumn drought. Although the needles fit into four distinct categories, the parent trees are sometimes less easily classified, especially near their ancestral Pleistocene ranges in the Mojave and northern Sonoran deserts. The abundance of trees with both one- and two-needled fascicles in the zones between P. monophylla, P. edulis and fallax-type populations suggest that needle fascicle number is an unreliable characteristic for species classification. Disregarding needle fascicle number, the fallax-type needles are nearly identical to P. edulis, supporting Little’s (1968) initial classification of these trees as P. edulis var. fallax, while the californiarum-type needles have a distinctive morphology supporting Bailey’s (1987) classification of this tree as Pinus californiarum

    Improving seed germination of the eggplant rootstock Solanum torvum by testing multiple factors using an orthogonal array design

    [EN] Solanum torvum is a highly vigorous relative of eggplant that is resistant to a number of harmful soil-borne diseases and is compatible for grafting with eggplant. Being a potential rootstock, this plant frequently presents poor and erratic germination, which makes its practical use difficult. We used an L8 (2(7)) orthogonal array design to evaluate the primary effects of seven factors (soaking of seeds, scarification with sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), application of gibberellic acid (GA(3)), use of potassium mitrate (KNO3) as a moistening agent, cold stratification, application of a heatshock, and light irradiation during germination) at two levels (L0 and L1) using four germination parameters (early and final germination, germination rate and vigour index) in fresh S. torvum seeds. S. torvum seeds had a strong dormancy with no germination in the untreated seeds and high early and final germination (approximately 100%) in certain treatments. An evaluation of the main effects revealed highly positive effects on germination from seed soaking, and the use of GA(3), KNO3, and light irradiation, whereas NaClO scarification had a negative effect. The application of cold stratification and heat shock treatments also had a positive effect on seed germination but to a lesser extent than the other treatments. An improved proposed protocol that consisted of subjecting seeds to soaking, the application of GA(3) and KNO3, cold stratification, heat shock, and light irradiation was validated and demonstrated to be highly effective, with seed germination success greater than 60% being observed at 3 days and final germination reaching a plateau at 6 days. A second validation experiment using a commercial growing substrate also showed a high emergence (approximately 50%) at 7 days and a final germination of approximately 80% was recorded with application of the improved protocol. The seed germination protocol that we have developed will facilitate the use of S. torvum as a rootstock for eggplant and its use in breeding programmes.     Phage Therapy of Mycobacterium Infections: Compassionate Use of Phages in 20 Patients With Drug-Resistant Mycobacterial Disease

    Background: Nontuberculous Mycobacterium infections, particularly Mycobacterium abscessus, are increasingly common among patients with cystic fibrosis and chronic bronchiectatic lung diseases. Treatment is challenging due to intrinsic antibiotic resistance. Bacteriophage therapy represents a potentially novel approach. Relatively few active lytic phages are available and there is great variation in phage susceptibilities among M. abscessus isolates, requiring personalized phage identification. Methods: Mycobacterium isolates from 200 culture-positive patients with symptomatic disease were screened for phage susceptibilities. One or more lytic phages were identified for 55 isolates. Phages were administered intravenously, by aerosolization, or both to 20 patients on a compassionate use basis and patients were monitored for adverse reactions, clinical and microbiologic responses, the emergence of phage resistance, and phage neutralization in serum, sputum, or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Results: No adverse reactions attributed to therapy were seen in any patient regardless of the pathogen, phages administered, or the route of delivery. Favorable clinical or microbiological responses were observed in 11 patients. Neutralizing antibodies were identified in serum after initiation of phage delivery intravenously in 8 patients, potentially contributing to lack of treatment response in 4 cases, but were not consistently associated with unfavorable responses in others. Eleven patients were treated with only a single phage, and no phage resistance was observed in any of these. Conclusions: Phage treatment of Mycobacterium infections is challenging due to the limited repertoire of therapeutically useful phages, but favorable clinical outcomes in patients lacking any other treatment options support continued development of adjunctive phage therapy for some mycobacterial infections

    The Effectiveness of Contract Farming for Raising Income of Smallholder Farmers in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: a Systematic Review

    Contract farming is used by an increasing number of firms as a preferred modality to source products from smallholder farmers in low and middle-income countries. Quality requirements of consumers, economies of scale in production or land ownership rights are common incentives for firms to offer contractual arrangements to farmers. Prices and access to key technology, key inputs or support services are the main incentives for farmers to enter into these contracts. There is great heterogeneity in contract farming, with differences in contracts, farmers, products, buyers, and institutional environments. The last decade shows a rapid increase in studies that use quasi-experimental research designs to assess the effects of specific empirical instances of contract farming on smallholders. The objective of this systematic review was to distill generalised inferences from this rapidly growing body of evidence. The review synthesised the studies in order to answer two questions: 1: What is known about the effect size of contract farming on income and food security of smallholder farmers in low- and middle-income countries? 2: Under which enabling or limiting conditions are contract farming arrangements effective for improving income and food security of smallholders
