Looking for the gluonic EMC effect in associated J/ψJ/\psi + Îł\gamma production

    Get PDF
We study the associated production of J/ψ +Îł J/\psi\ + \gamma in fixed-target experiments with nuclear targets as well as at the relativistic heavy-ion collider (RHIC). We find that this process affords a very clean probe of ρg\rho_g, the ratio of gluon density in a heavy nucleus to that of a proton. The combined xx range thus available can be used to discriminate between the predictions of different models of the EMC effect for ρg\rho_g.Comment: 10 pages, 4 Figures (not included, available only by p-mail), LaTeX, CERN-TH.6679/92, TIFR/TH/92-59, BU-TH-92/3, Minor revision. Possible Molecular States of Ds∗Dˉs∗D^{*}_s\bar{D}^{*}_s System and Y(4140)

The interpretation of Y(4140) as a Ds∗Dˉs∗D^{*}_s\bar{D}^{*}_s molecule is studied dynamically in the one boson exchange approach, where σ\sigma, η\eta and ϕ\phi exchange are included. Ten allowed Ds∗Dˉs∗D^{*}_s\bar{D}^{*}_s states with low spin parity are considered, we find that the JPC=0++J^{PC}=0^{++}, 1+−1^{+-}, 0−+0^{-+}, 2++2^{++} and 1−−1^{--} Ds∗Dˉs∗D^{*}_s\bar{D}^{*}_s configurations are most tightly bound. We suggest the most favorable quantum numbers are JPC=0++J^{PC}=0^{++} for Y(4140) as a Ds∗Dˉs∗D^{*}_s\bar{D}^{*}_s molecule, however, JPC=0−+J^{PC}=0^{-+} and 2++2^{++} can not be excluded. We propose to search for the 1+−1^{+-} and 1−−1^{--} partners in the J/ψηJ/\psi\eta and J/ψηâ€ČJ/\psi\eta' final states, which is an important test of the molecular hypothesis of Y(4140) and the reasonability of our model. The 0++0^{++} Bs∗Bˉs∗B^{*}_s\bar{B}^{*}_s molecule is deeply bound, experimental search in the ΄(1S)ϕ\Upsilon(1S)\phi channel at Tevatron and LHC is suggested.Comment: 13 pages,2 figure

Urinary arsenic profiles reveal exposures to inorganic arsenic from private drinking water supplies in Cornwall, UK

    Get PDF
Private water supplies (PWS) in Cornwall, South West England exceeded the current WHO guidance value and UK prescribed concentration or value (PCV) for arsenic of 10 Όg/L in 5% of properties surveyed (n = 497). In this follow-up study, the first of its kind in the UK, volunteers (n = 207) from 127 households who used their PWS for drinking, provided urine and drinking water samples for total As determination by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and urinary As speciation by high performance liquid chromatography ICP-MS (HPLC-ICP-MS). Arsenic concentrations exceeding 10 Όg/L were found in the PWS of 10% of the volunteers. Unadjusted total urinary As concentrations were poorly correlated (Spearman’s ρ = 0.36 (P < 0.001)) with PWS As largely due to the use of spot urine samples and the dominance of arsenobetaine (AB) from seafood sources. However, the osmolality adjusted sum, U-AsIMM, of urinary inorganic As species, arsenite (AsIII) and arsenate (AsV), and their metabolites, methylarsonate (MA) and dimethylarsinate (DMA), was found to strongly correlate (Spearman’s ρ: 0.62 (P < 0.001)) with PWS As, indicating private water supplies as the dominant source of inorganic As exposure in the study population of PWS users

Scalar Glueball Decay Into Pions In Effective Theory

We discuss the mixing between the sigma meson sigma and the "pure" glueball field H and study the decays of the scalar glueball candidates f_0(1370), f_0(1500) and f_0(1710) (a linear combination of sigma and H) into two pions in an effective linear sigma model.Comment: 10 pages and 3 figures (an extended version of hep-ph/9805412), to appear in Phys. Bloom-Gilman duality of inelastic structure functions in nucleon and nuclei

    Get PDF
The Bloom-Gilman local duality of the inelastic structure function of the proton, the deuteron and light complex nuclei is investigated using available experimental data in the squared four-momentum transfer range from 0.3 to 5 (GeV/c)**2. The results of our analysis suggest that the onset of the Bloom-Gilman local duality is anticipated in complex nuclei with respect to the case of the protonand the deuteron. A possible interpretation of this result in terms of a rescaling effect is discussed with particular emphasis to the possibility of reproducing the damping of the nucleon-resonance transitions observed in recent electroproduction data off nuclei.Comment: revised version, to appear in Physical Review

The Spin-Dependent Structure Functions of Nuclei in the Meson-Nucleon Theory

A theoretical approach to the investigation of spin-dependent structure functions in deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons off polarized nuclei, based on the effective meson-nucleon theory and operator product expansion method, is proposed and applied to deuteron and 3He^3He. The explicit forms of the moments of the deuteron and 3He^3He spin-dependent structure functions are found and numerical estimates of the influence of nuclear structure effects are presented.Comment: 42 pages revtex, 7 postscript figures available from above e-mail upon request. Prolonged exposure to arsenic in UK private water supplies: toenail, hair and drinking water concentrations

    Get PDF
Chronic exposure to arsenic (As) in drinking water is an established cause of cancer and other adverse health effects. Arsenic concentrations >10 ÎŒg L−1 were previously measured in 5% of private water supplies (PWS) in Cornwall, UK. The present study investigated prolongued exposure to As by measuring biomarkers in hair and toenail samples from 212 volunteers and repeated measurements of As in drinking water from 127 households served by PWS. Strong positive Pearson correlations (rp = 0.95) indicated stability of water As concentrations over the time period investigated (up to 31 months). Drinking water As concentrations were positively correlated with toenail (rp = 0.53) and hair (rp = 0.38) As concentrations – indicative of prolonged exposure. Analysis of washing procedure solutions provided strong evidence of the effective removal of exogenous As from toenail samples. Significantly higher As concentrations were measured in hair samples from males and smokers and As concentrations in toenails were negatively associated with age. A positive association between seafood consumption and toenail As and a negative association between home-grown vegetable consumption and hair As was observed for volunteers exposed to <1 As ÎŒg L−1 in drinking water. These findings have important implications regarding the interpretation of toenail and hair biomarkers. Substantial variation in biomarker As concentrations remained unaccounted for, with soil and dust exposure as possible explanations

    Deuteron Electroweak Disintegration

We study the deuteron electrodisintegration with inclusion of the neutral currents focusing on the helicity asymmetry of the exclusive cross section in coplanar geometry. We stress that a measurement of this asymmetry in the quasi elastic region is of interest for an experimental determination of the weak form factors of the nucleon, allowing one to obtain the parity violating electron neutron asymmetry. Numerically, we consider the reaction at low momentum transfer and discuss the sensitivity of the helicity asymmetry to the strangeness radius and magnetic moment. The problems coming from the finite angular acceptance of the spectrometers are also considered.Comment: 30 pages, Latex, 7 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.C e-mail: [email protected] , [email protected]

The BES f_0(1810): a new glueball candidate

    Get PDF
We analyze the f_0(1810) state recently observed by the BES collaboration via radiative J/\psi decay to a resonant \phi\omega spectrum and confront it with DM2 data and glueball theory. The DM2 group only measured \omega\omega decays and reported a pseudoscalar but no scalar resonance in this mass region. A rescattering mechanism from the open flavored KKbar decay channel is considered to explain why the resonance is only seen in the flavor asymmetric \omega\phi branch along with a discussion of positive C parity charmonia decays to strengthen the case for preferred open flavor glueball decays. We also calculate the total glueball decay width to be roughly 100 MeV, in agreement with the narrow, newly found f_0, and smaller than the expected estimate of 200-400 MeV. We conclude that this discovered scalar hadron is a solid glueball candidate and deserves further experimental investigation, especially in the K-Kbar channel. Finally we comment on other, but less likely, possible assignments for this state.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures. Major substantive additions, including an ab-initio, QCD-based computation of the glueball inclusive decay width, evaluation of final state effects, and enhanced discussion of several alternative possibilities. Our conclusions are unchanged: the BES f_0(1810) is a promising glueball candidat

Parity violating target asymmetry in electron - proton scattering

    Get PDF
We analyze the parity-violating (PV) components of the analyzing power in elastic electron-proton scattering and discuss their sensitivity to the strange quark contributions to the proton weak form factors. We point out that the component of the analyzing power along the momentum transfer is independent of the electric weak form factor and thus compares favorably with the PV beam asymmetry for a determination of the strangeness magnetic moment. We also show that the transverse component could be used for constraining the strangeness radius. Finally, we argue that a measurement of both components could give experimental information on the strangeness axial charge.Comment: 24 pages, Latex, 5 eps figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.
