    Phi-four solitary waves in a parabolic potentia: existence, stability, and collisional dynamics

    We explore a φ4 model with an added external parabolic potential term. This term dramatically alters the spectral properties of the system. We identify single and multiple kink solutions and examine their stability features; importantly, all of the stationary structures turn out to be unstable. We complement these with a dynamical study of the evolution of a single kink in the trap, as well as of the scattering of kink and anti-kink solutions of the model. We observe that some of the key characteristics of kink-antikink collisions, such as the critical velocity and the multi-bounce windows, are sensitively dependent on the trap strength parameter, as well as the initial displacement of the kink and antikink.Accepted manuscrip

    Defining and investigating difficult asthma: Developing quality indicators

    SummaryBackgroundThere is no agreed definition of ‘difficult asthma’ or what investigations should be available to investigate these patients. Patients with difficult asthma remain symptomatic on high levels of treatment and are high users of medical resources.AimTo develop a set of quality indicators for the definition and investigation of difficult asthma.MethodModified RAND Appropriateness Method was used. An expert panel composed of nine hospital asthma specialists who run ‘difficult’ asthma clinics and were identified from a shortlist of key workers in the field. Indicators were rated as necessary to define and investigate difficult asthma.ResultsDifficult asthma was defined as ‘symptoms persisting beyond therapy consistent with step 4 of the British Thoracic Society (BTS) guidelines’ (high dose inhaled corticosteroids and long acting β2-agonists). Eighty-three indicators were identified (40 relating to definition and 43 relating to investigations). Of these 32 (39%) were rated as necessary: 7 out of 40 (18%) for defining difficult asthma and 23 out of 43 (53%) for investigations. Indicators of high medical resource usage were characteristic of the ‘difficult’ nature of the management of patient with difficult asthma. A framework for the investigation of these patients was created.ConclusionThe listed performance indicators identify a range of requirements that are necessary to define difficult asthma. Targeting of real needs in this group of patients will lead to better patient care and reduction of ‘waste’ in provision of healthcare

    This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (Intervention). The objectives are as follows: This review aims to look at the benefits and harms of different PD catheter insertion techniques. To establish whether a specific technique used to place catheters in adults and children, who are new to PD, result in any significant differences in clinical outcomes. Insertion techniques will be further defined as peritoneoscopic, percutaneous, fluoroscopic, laparoscopic insertion or open surgery. To identify which technique offers optimal clinical outcomes and minimises post-procedure complications including postoperative haemorrhage, PD catheter dysfunction, exit site infection/peritonitis and bowel perforation

    Vegetation classification in a floristically complex area: the Agulhas Plain

    The vegetation of the Agulhas Plain was classified and described using Campbell’s (1985) approach. Data collected included a subset of Campbell’s structural and higher taxon characters, as well as dominant (10% cover) species, which would enable the recognition of communities to at least the sub-series level in his hierarchy. The classification was produced using the Braun–Blanquet method of table sorting. Nine zonal communities, at various hierarchical levels, were recognized and mapped. Non-fynbos communities included Forest & Thicket, and Renoster Shrubland. Fynbos communities, which covered most of the study area, were Mesotrophic Asteraceous Fynbos, Dune Asteraceous Fynbos, Dry Restioid Fynbos, Protea repens Proteoid Fynbos, Protea obtusifolia–Leucadendron meridianum/P. susannae–L. coniferum Proteoid Fynbos, L. platyspermum–P. compacta–L. xanthoconus Proteoid Fynbos and Mesic Ericaceous Fynbos. It was not possible to classify Forest & Thicket below the group level while a new concept (Dune Asteraceous Fynbos) was developed at the sub-series level. In all other respects the largely lowland vegetation of the Agulhas Plain could be integrated with Campbell’s Fynbos Biome mountain vegetation concepts. This study therefore demolished any justification for retaining a lowland fynbos vegetation concept. Since we utilized the skills of a number of trained botanists in collecting easily recognizable structural, and limited floristic data, the entire study was completed in under 18months. The mapped communities are adequate for conservation planning and comprise an essential descriptive basis for future studies on the evolution and maintenance of species diversity on the Agulhas Plain. The efficiency and effectiveness of our approach makes it suitable as a model for rapid vegetation classification of the much-threatened vegetation of the fynbos biome lowlands

    Memory usage verification using Hip/Sleek.

    Embedded systems often come with constrained memory footprints. It is therefore essential to ensure that software running on such platforms fulfils memory usage specifications at compile-time, to prevent memory-related software failure after deployment. Previous proposals on memory usage verification are not satisfactory as they usually can only handle restricted subsets of programs, especially when shared mutable data structures are involved. In this paper, we propose a simple but novel solution. We instrument programs with explicit memory operations so that memory usage verification can be done along with the verification of other properties, using an automated verification system Hip/Sleek developed recently by Chin et al.[10,19]. The instrumentation can be done automatically and is proven sound with respect to an underlying semantics. One immediate benefit is that we do not need to develop from scratch a specific system for memory usage verification. Another benefit is that we can verify more programs, especially those involving shared mutable data structures, which previous systems failed to handle, as evidenced by our experimental results

    The Tevatron Higgs exclusion limits and theoretical uncertainties: a critical appraisal

    We examine the exclusion limits set by the CDF and D0 experiments on the Standard Model Higgs boson mass from their searches at the Tevatron in the light of large theoretical uncertainties on the signal and background cross sections. We show that when these uncertainties are consistently taken into account, the sensitivity of the experiments becomes significantly lower and the currently excluded mass range MH=158M_H=158-175 GeV would be entirely reopened. The necessary luminosity required to recover the current sensitivity is found to be a factor of two higher than the present one.Comment: 11 pages, 5 Figures.     Swift J1644+5734: the EVN view

    A small fraction of Tidal Disruption Events (TDE) produce relativistic jets, evidenced by their non-thermal X-ray spectra and transient radio emission. Here we present milliarcsecond-resolution imaging results on TDE J1644+5734 with the European VLBI Network (EVN). These provide a strong astrometric constraint on the average apparent jet velocity βapp < 0.27, that constrains the intrinsic jet velocity for a given viewing angle
