Thermal-Mechanical Properties of Polyurethane-Clay Shape Memory Polymer Nanocomposites
Shape memory nanocomposites of polyurethane (PU)-clay were fabricated by melt mixing of PU and nano-clay. Based on nano-indentation and microhardness tests, the strength of the nanocomposites increased dramatically as a function of clay content, which is attributed to the enhanced nanoclay–polymer interactions. Thermal mechanical experiments demonstrated good mechanical and shape memory effects of the nanocomposites. Full shape memory recovery was displayed by both the pure PU and PU-clay nanocomposites.
Electron-acoustic plasma waves: oblique modulation and envelope solitons
Theoretical and numerical studies are presented of the amplitude modulation
of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) propagating in space plasmas whose
constituents are inertial cold electrons, Boltzmann distributed hot electrons
and stationary ions. Perturbations oblique to the carrier EAW propagation
direction have been considered. The stability analysis, based on a nonlinear
Schroedinger equation (NLSE), reveals that the EAW may become unstable; the
stability criteria depend on the angle between the modulation and
propagation directions. Different types of localized EA excitations are shown
to exist.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.
Possible Dibaryons with Strangeness s=-5
In the framework of , the binding energy of the six quark system with
strangeness s=-5 is systematically investigated under the SU(3) chiral
constituent quark model. The single channel calculation with
spins S=0 and 3 and the coupled and channel
calculation with spins S=1 and 2 are considered, respectively. The results show
following observations: In the spin=0 case, is a bound dibaryon
with the binding energy being . In the S=1 case,
is also a bound dibaryon. Its binding energy is ranged from to . In the S=2 and S=3 cases, no evidence of bound dibaryons
are found. The phase shifts and scattering lengths in the S=0 and S=1 cases are
also given.Comment: 10 pages, late
Photon-Photon Scattering, Pion Polarizability and Chiral Symmetry
Recent attempts to detect the pion polarizability via analysis of
measurements are examined. The connection
between calculations based on dispersion relations and on chiral perturbation
theory is established by matching the low energy chiral amplitude with that
given by a full dispersive treatment. Using the values for the polarizability
required by chiral symmetry, predicted and experimental cross sections are
shown to be in agreement.Comment: 21 pages(+10 figures available on request), LATEX, UMHEP-38
Electron transport in gated InGaAs and InAsP quantum well wires in selectively-grown InP ridge structures
The purpose of this work is to fabricate ribbon-like InGaAs and InAsP wires
embedded in InP ridge structures and investigate their transport properties.
The InP ridge structures that contain the wires are selectively grown by
chemical beam epitaxy (CBE) on pre-patterned InP substrates. To optimize the
growth and micro-fabrication processes for electronic transport, we explore the
Ohmic contact resistance, the electron density, and the mobility as a function
of the wire width using standard transport and Shubnikov-de Haas measurements.
At low temperatures the ridge structures reveal reproducible mesoscopic
conductance fluctuations. We also fabricate ridge structures with submicron
gate electrodes that exhibit non-leaky gating and good pinch-off
characteristics acceptable for device operation. Using such wrap gate
electrodes, we demonstrate that the wires can be split to form quantum dots
evidenced by Coulomb blockade oscillations in transport measurements.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, additional references and improved Fig. 4c,

Synchronization of fractional order chaotic systems
The chaotic dynamics of fractional order systems begin to attract much
attentions in recent years. In this brief report, we study the master-slave
synchronization of fractional order chaotic systems. It is shown that
fractional order chaotic systems can also be synchronized.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure
Fundamental Physical Constants: Looking from Different Angles
We consider fundamental physical constants which are among a few of the most
important pieces of information we have learned about Nature after its
intensive centuries-long studies. We discuss their multifunctional role in
modern physics including problems related to the art of measurement, natural
and practical units, origin of the constants, their possible calculability and
variability etc
Kink propagation in a two-dimensional curved Josephson junction
We consider the propagation of sine-Gordon kinks in a planar curved strip as
a model of nonlinear wave propagation in curved wave guides. The homogeneous
Neumann transverse boundary conditions, in the curvilinear coordinates, allow
to assume a homogeneous kink solution. Using a simple collective variable
approach based on the kink coordinate, we show that curved regions act as
potential barriers for the wave and determine the threshold velocity for the
kink to cross. The analysis is confirmed by numerical solution of the 2D
sine-Gordon equation.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures (2 in color
Confinement and scaling in deep inelastic scattering
We show that parton confinement in the final state generates large
corrections to Bjorken scaling, thus leaving less room for the logarithmic
corrections. In particular, the -scaling violations at large are
entirely described in terms of power corrections. For treatment of these
non-perturbative effects, we derive a new expansion in powers of for
the structure function that is free of infra-red singularities and which
reduces corrections to the leading term. The leading term represents scattering
from an off-mass-shell parton, which keeps the same virtual mass in the final
state. It is found that this quasi-free term is a function of a new variable
, which coincides with the Bjorken variable for . The
two variables are very different, however, at finite . In particular, the
variable depends on the invariant mass of the spectator particles.
Analysis of the data at large shows excellent scaling in the variable , and determines the value of the diquark mass to be close to zero. -scaling allows us to extract the structure function near the elastic
threshold. It is found to behave as . Predictions for the
structure functions based on -scaling are made.Comment: Discussion of target mass corrections is added. Accepted for
