Spectral properties of zero temperature dynamics in a model of a compacting granular column
The compacting of a column of grains has been studied using a one-dimensional
Ising model with long range directed interactions in which down and up spins
represent orientations of the grain having or not having an associated void.
When the column is not shaken (zero 'temperature') the motion becomes highly
constrained and under most circumstances we find that the generator of the
stochastic dynamics assumes an unusual form: many eigenvalues become
degenerate, but the associated multi-dimensional invariant spaces have but a
single eigenvector. There is no spectral expansion and a Jordan form must be
used. Many properties of the dynamics are established here analytically; some
are not. General issues associated with the Jordan form are also taken up.Comment: 34 pages, 4 figures, 3 table
Irradiation Effects on Microstructure and Dielectric Properties of Ba[(Mg0.32Co0.02)Nb0.66]O3 [BMCN] Thin Films
Ba[(Mg0.32Co0.02)Nb0.66]O3 [BMCN] thin films prepared on Pt-Si, MgO, Silicon and ITO coated glass substrates by Pulsed Laser Deposition Technique are investigated. Relative growth parameters suggest that ITO coated glass substrate has good potential for growing films with near Nano size columnar grains. In comparison to bulk, dielectric constant and dielectric loss increases in BMCN films. This undesirable rise in dielectric loss can be drastically reduced by a factor of more than 1/100th times through Ag15+ ion irradiation at 1 × 1012 ions/cm2 dose.

Characteristic Polynomials of Sample Covariance Matrices: The Non-Square Case
We consider the sample covariance matrices of large data matrices which have
i.i.d. complex matrix entries and which are non-square in the sense that the
difference between the number of rows and the number of columns tends to
infinity. We show that the second-order correlation function of the
characteristic polynomial of the sample covariance matrix is asymptotically
given by the sine kernel in the bulk of the spectrum and by the Airy kernel at
the edge of the spectrum. Similar results are given for real sample covariance
matrices
Steady State Behavior of Mechanically Perturbed Spin Glasses and Ferromagnets
A zero temperature dynamics of Ising spin glasses and ferromagnets on random
graphs of finite connectivity is considered, like granular media these systems
have an extensive entropy of metastable states. We consider the problem of what
energy a randomly prepared spin system falls to before becoming stuck in a
metastable state. We then introduce a tapping mechanism, analogous to that of
real experiments on granular media, this tapping, corresponding to flipping
simultaneously any spin with probability , leads to stationary regime with a
steady state energy . We explicitly solve this problem for the one
dimensional ferromagnet and spin glass and carry out extensive
numerical simulations for spin systems of higher connectivity. The link with
the density of metastable states at fixed energy and the idea of Edwards that
one may construct a thermodynamics with a flat measure over metastable states
is discussed. In addition our simulations on the ferromagnetic systems reveal a
novel first order transition, whereas the usual thermodynamic transition on
these graphs is second order.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
On Eigenvalues of the sum of two random projections
We study the behavior of eigenvalues of matrix P_N + Q_N where P_N and Q_N
are two N -by-N random orthogonal projections. We relate the joint eigenvalue
distribution of this matrix to the Jacobi matrix ensemble and establish the
universal behavior of eigenvalues for large N. The limiting local behavior of
eigenvalues is governed by the sine kernel in the bulk and by either the Bessel
or the Airy kernel at the edge depending on parameters. We also study an
exceptional case when the local behavior of eigenvalues of P_N + Q_N is not
universal in the usual sense.Comment: 14 page
A real quaternion spherical ensemble of random matrices
One can identify a tripartite classification of random matrix ensembles into
geometrical universality classes corresponding to the plane, the sphere and the
anti-sphere. The plane is identified with Ginibre-type (iid) matrices and the
anti-sphere with truncations of unitary matrices. This paper focusses on an
ensemble corresponding to the sphere: matrices of the form \bY= \bA^{-1} \bB,
where \bA and \bB are independent matrices with iid standard
Gaussian real quaternion entries. By applying techniques similar to those used
for the analogous complex and real spherical ensembles, the eigenvalue jpdf and
correlation functions are calculated. This completes the exploration of
spherical matrices using the traditional Dyson indices .
We find that the eigenvalue density (after stereographic projection onto the
sphere) has a depletion of eigenvalues along a ring corresponding to the real
axis, with reflective symmetry about this ring. However, in the limit of large
matrix dimension, this eigenvalue density approaches that of the corresponding
complex ensemble, a density which is uniform on the sphere. This result is in
keeping with the spherical law (analogous to the circular law for iid
matrices), which states that for matrices having the spherical structure \bY=
\bA^{-1} \bB, where \bA and \bB are independent, iid matrices the
(stereographically projected) eigenvalue density tends to uniformity on the
sphere.Comment: 25 pages, 3 figures. Added another citation in version
Integrable structure of Ginibre's ensemble of real random matrices and a Pfaffian integration theorem
In the recent publication [E. Kanzieper and G. Akemann, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 230201 (2005)], an exact solution was reported for the probability p_{n,k} to find exactly k real eigenvalues in the spectrum of an nxn real asymmetric matrix drawn at
random from Ginibre's Orthogonal Ensemble (GinOE). In the present paper, we offer a detailed derivation of the above result by concentrating on the proof of the Pfaffian integration theorem, the
key ingredient of our analysis of the statistics of real eigenvalues in the GinOE. We also initiate a study of the correlations of complex eigenvalues and derive a formula for the joint probability density function of all complex eigenvalues of a
GinOE matrix restricted to have exactly k real eigenvalues. In the particular case of k=0, all correlation functions of complex eigenvalues are determined
Relaxation Height in Energy Landscapes: an Application to Multiple Metastable States
The study of systems with multiple (not necessarily degenerate) metastable
states presents subtle difficulties from the mathematical point of view related
to the variational problem that has to be solved in these cases. We introduce
the notion of relaxation height in a general energy landscape and we prove
sufficient conditions which are valid even in presence of multiple metastable
states. We show how these results can be used to approach the problem of
multiple metastable states via the use of the modern theories of metastability.
We finally apply these general results to the Blume--Capel model for a
particular choice of the parameters ensuring the existence of two multiple, and
not degenerate in energy, metastable states
