    Diversity and ecology of the potato : the use of spatial analysis in crop science

    Spatial variation is a fundamental characteristic of agriculture, but crop scientists have largely ignored it, particularly at levels beyond the field scale. This thesis provides examples of analysis of spatial variation over larger areas. It contributes to our knowledge of the potato crop and its wild relatives, and to methodological progress in the use of geographic information in crop science. Part I deals with management of genetic resources. Methods that can be used to improve data quality in biological collection databases, and to assess the presence of spatial biases are discussed. The spatial distribution of wild potato species is analyzed, and the value of geographic, ecological, and taxonomic factors to predict the presence of frost tolerance in wild potatoes is studied. Part II deals with aspects of agro-ecological zoning approaches for research management. First, gobal potato distribution is described and analyzed. This is followed by a constraint-specific agro-ecological zoning study for potato late blight; a study on the potential impact of frost resistant potatoes; and an assessment of the effect of climate change on global potato production. In the final chapter, research needs and challenges to the further use of GIS in crop science are discussed

    The potential impact of orange-fleshed sweetpotatoes on vitamin A intake in Sub-Saharan Africa.

    A recent ex ante impact assessment indicates that orangefleshed sweetpotatoes can make a major contribution to alleviating vitamin A malnutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa. Replacing the white-fleshed varieties now grown by farmers with new high ß-carotene cultivars that meet local preferences would benefit an estimated 50 million children under age 6 who are currently at risk. The majority of children in Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda would benefit, as would about half of the children in Tanzania. Children in Ethiopia, Kenya and South Africa would also be affected, though to a lesser degree. The study did not take into account the benefits of the new cultivars to pregnant and lactating women, a population whose health is also likely to improve from the availability of the new plant types. Vitamin A deficiency is a major public health problem throughout the region and is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths annually among young children

    Genetic diversity, population structure, and genetic correlation with climatic variation in chickpea (Cicer arietinum) landraces from Pakistan

    Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) production in arid regions, such as those predominant in Pakistan, faces immense challenges of drought and heat stress. Addressing these challenges is made more difficult by the lack of genetic and phenotypic characterization of available cultivated varieties and breeding materials. Genotyping-by-sequencing offers a rapid and cost-effective means to identify genome-wide nucleotide variation in crop germplasm. When combined with extended crop phenotypes deduced from climatic variation at sites of collection, the data can predict which portions of genetic variation might have roles in climate resilience. Here we use 8113 single nucleotide polymorphism markers to determine genetic variation and compare population structure within a previously uncharacterized collection of 77 landraces and 5 elite cultivars, currently grown in situ on farms throughout the chickpea growing regions of Pakistan. The compiled landraces span a striking aridity gradient into the Thal Desert of the Punjab. Despite low levels of variation across the collection and limited genetic structure, we found some differentiation between accessions from arid, semiarid, irrigated, and coastal areas. In a subset of 232 markers, we found evidence of differentiation along gradients of elevation and isothermality. Our results highlight the utility of exploring large germplasm collections for nucleotide variation associated with environmental extremes, and the use of such data to nominate germplasm accessions with the potential to improve crop drought tolerance and other environmental traits

    Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus nest sites on the Isle of Mull are associated with habitat mosaics and constrained by topography

Aims: To use distribution modelling to investigate nesting habitat associations using a long term dataset for Hen Harrier on Mull. Methods: We develop area-interaction models using a LASSO penalty to explore the distribution of 102 Hen Harrier nest sites in relation to habitat and topography. Our model is then successfully validated in tests using data for 70 nest sites from subsequent years. Results: Our model is effective in predicting suitable areas for Hen Harrier nest sites and indicates that Hen Harriers on Mull are found in habitat mosaics below 200 m asl. Hen Harrier nest intensity is positively associated with increasing proportions of moorland and scrub, open canopy forestry and closed canopy forestry. Nest intensity is negatively associated with increasing proportions of grazed land. Conclusion: Hen Harrier avoid grazed areas but are relatively tolerant of other habitat combinations. These findings are supported by previous observations of Hen Harrier habitat use and have implications for the recovery of some Hen Harrier SPA populations and future forest management. Open canopy forest and forest mosaics could potentially be incorporated into landscape-scale conservation plans for Hen Harriers using the population in Mull as an example
