Damped Bogoliubov excitations of a condensate interacting with a static thermal cloud
We calculate the damping of condensate collective excitations at finite
temperatures arising from the lack of equilibrium between the condensate and
thermal atoms. We neglect the non-condensate dynamics by fixing the thermal
cloud in static equilibrium. We derive a set of generalized Bogoliubov
equations for finite temperatures that contain an explicit damping term due to
collisional exchange of atoms between the two components. We have numerically
solved these Bogoliubov equations to obtain the temperature dependence of the
damping of the condensate modes in a harmonic trap. We compare these results
with our recent work based on the Thomas-Fermi approximation.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures included. Submitted to PR
Thermodynamics of an interacting trapped Bose-Einstein gas in the classical field approximation
We present a convenient technique describing the condensate in dynamical
equilibrium with the thermal cloud, at temperatures close to the critical one.
We show that the whole isolated system may be viewed as a single classical
field undergoing nonlinear dynamics leading to a steady state. In our procedure
it is the observation process and the finite detection time that allow for
splitting the system into the condensate and the thermal cloud.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figures, final versio
Assortative social mixing and sex disparities in tuberculosis burden
Globally, men have higher tuberculosis (TB) burden but the mechanisms underlying this sex disparity are not fully understood. Recent surveys of social mixing patterns have established moderate preferential within-sex mixing in many settings. This assortative mixing could amplify differences from other causes. We explored the impact of assortative mixing and factors differentially affecting disease progression and detection using a sex-stratified deterministic TB transmission model. We explored the influence of assortativity at disease-free and endemic equilibria, finding stronger effects during invasion and on increasing male:female prevalence (M:F) ratios than overall prevalence. Variance-based sensitivity analysis of endemic equilibria identified differential progression as the most important driver of M:F ratio uncertainty. We fitted our model to prevalence and notification data in exemplar settings within a fully Bayesian framework. For our high M:F setting, random mixing reduced equilibrium M:F ratios by 12% (95% CrI 0–30%). Equalizing male case detection there led to a 20% (95% CrI 11–31%) reduction in M:F ratio over 10 years—insufficient to eliminate sex disparities. However, this potentially achievable improvement was associated with a meaningful 8% (95% CrI 4–14%) reduction in total TB prevalence over this time frame
Bistability and macroscopic quantum coherence in a BEC of ^7Li
We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of in a situation where
the density undergoes a symmetry breaking in real space. This occurs for a
suitable number of condensed atoms in a double well potential, obtained by
adding a standing wave light field to the trap potential. Evidence of
bistability results from the solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By
second quantization, we show that the classical bistable situation is in fact a
Schr\"odinger cat (SC) and evaluate the tunneling rate between the two SC
states. The oscillation between the two states is called MQC (macroscopic
quantum coherence); we study the effects of losses on MQC.Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures. e-mail: [email protected]
Adiabatic Output Coupling of a Bose Gas at Finite Temperatures
We develop a general theory of adiabatic output coupling from trapped atomic
Bose-Einstein Condensates at finite temperatures. For weak coupling, the output
rate from the condensate, and the excited levels in the trap, settles in a time
proportional to the inverse of the spectral width of the coupling to the output
modes. We discuss the properties of the output atoms in the quasi-steady-state
where the population in the trap is not appreciably depleted. We show how the
composition of the output beam, containing condensate and thermal component,
may be controlled by changing the frequency of the output coupler. This
composition determines the first and second order coherence of the output beam.
We discuss the changes in the composition of the bose gas left in the trap and
show how nonresonant output coupling can stimulate either the evaporation of
thermal excitations in the trap or the growth of non-thermal excitations, when
pairs of correlated atoms leave the condensate.Comment: 22 pages, 6 Figs. To appear in Physical Review A All the typos from

Small-amplitude normal modes of a vortex in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate
We consider a cylindrically symmetric trap containing a small Bose-Einstein
condensate with a singly quantized vortex on the axis of symmetry. A
time-dependent variational Lagrangian analysis yields the small-amplitude
dynamics of the vortex and the condensate, directly determining the equations
of motion of the coupled normal modes. As found previously from the Bogoliubov
equations, there are two rigid dipole modes and one anomalous mode with a
negative frequency when seen in the laboratory frame.Comment: 4 pages, no figures, Revte
CPT1a-dependent long-chain fatty acid oxidation is essential for maintaining glucagon secretion from pancreatic islets
Glucagon, the principal hyperglycemic hormone, is secreted from pancreatic islet α cells as part of the counter-regulatory response to hypoglycemia. Hence, secretory output from α cells is under high demand in conditions of low glucose supply. Many tissues oxidize fat as an alternate energy substrate. Here, we show that glucagon secretion in low glucose conditions is maintained by fatty acid metabolism in both mouse and human islets, and that inhibiting this metabolic pathway profoundly decreases glucagon output by depolarizing α cell membrane potential and decreasing action potential amplitude. We demonstrate, by using experimental and computational approaches, that this is not mediated by the KATP channel, but instead due to reduced operation of the Na+-K+ pump. These data suggest that counter-regulatory secretion of glucagon is driven by fatty acid metabolism, and that the Na+-K+ pump is an important ATP-dependent regulator of α cell function
Self-Trapping, Quantum Tunneling and Decay Rates for a Bose Gas with Attractive Nonlocal Interaction
We study the Bose-Einstein condensation for a cloud of Li atoms with
attractive nonlocal (finite-range) interaction in a harmonic trap. In addition
to the low-density metastable branch, that is present also in the case of local
interaction, a new stable branch appears at higher densities. For a large
number of atoms, the size of the cloud in the stable high-density branch is
independent of the trap size and the atoms are in a macroscopic quantum
self-trapped configuration. We analyze the macroscopic quantum tunneling
between the low-density metastable branch and the high-density one by using the
istanton technique. Moreover we consider the decay rate of the Bose condensate
due to inelastic two- and three-body collisions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Novel insights into the marine phase and river fidelity of anadromous twaite shad Alosa fallax in the UK and Ireland
© 2020 The Authors. Aquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd Most research on anadromous fishes has been invested in their freshwater life-phases, resulting in a relatively sparse understanding of their spatial ecology during marine life-phases. However, understanding the marine dispersal of anadromous fishes is essential to identify threats and to implement conservation measures that fully encompass their lifecycle. The twaite shad Alosa fallax is an anadromous fish increasingly imperilled across its range due to pollution, harvesting, and impediments to freshwater migration, but little is known about its distribution and movements during its marine life-phase. Here, the application of acoustic telemetry provided novel insights into the coastal dispersal of twaite shad in the UK and Ireland during 2018–2019, and the freshwater entry of individuals during the 2019 spawning season. Of 73 twaite shad acoustic-tagged during their upstream migration in the River Severn in May 2018, 58 emigrated from the river. Twelve were subsequently detected 200 km to the south-west at the Taw–Torridge Estuary between July 2018 and April 2019, where estuarine movements up to 5.8 km inland occurred in summer, winter, and spring. One was subsequently detected in the Munster Blackwater Estuary (Ireland) and then in the River Severn, indicating a minimum movement distance of 950 km. Thirty-four (59%) of the emigrating individuals from 2018 re-entered fresh water in the rivers Severn (n = 33) and Wye (n = 2) in April and May 2019. These results suggest year-round use of estuarine and nearshore habitats by at least a subset of the twaite shad population during their marine phase, providing evidence of potential range overlap between populations that spawn in different areas in the UK and Ireland, which may be facilitated by substantial dispersal. The results also highlight the potential of telemetry for estimating freshwater and marine mortality, and the benefits of sharing detection data across networks
Hydrodynamic Approach to Vortex Lifetime in Trapped Bose Condensates
We study a vortex in a two-dimensional, harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein
condensate at zero temperature. Through a variational calculation using a trial
condensate wave function and a nonlinear Schroedinger Lagrangian, we obtain the
effective potential experienced by a vortex at an arbitrary position in the
condensate, and find that an off-center vortex will move in a circular
trajectory around the trap center. We find the frequency of this precession to
be smaller than the elementary excitation frequencies in the cloud.
We also study the radiation of sound from a moving vortex in an infinite,
uniform system, and discuss the validity of this as an approximation for the
trapped case. Furthermore, we estimate the lifetime of a vortex due to
imperfections in the trapping potential.Comment: 10 pages, 1 eps figure, submitted to PRA, adjustments in response to
