    Compactness properties of operator multipliers

    We continue the study of multidimensional operator multipliers initiated in [arXiv:math/0701645]. We introduce the notion of the symbol of an operator multiplier. We characterise completely compact operator multipliers in terms of their symbol as well as in terms of approximation by finite rank multipliers. We give sufficient conditions for the sets of compact and completely compact multipliers to coincide and characterise the cases where an operator multiplier in the minimal tensor product of two C*-algebras is automatically compact. We give a description of multilinear modular completely compact completely bounded maps defined on the direct product of finitely many copies of the C*-algebra of compact operators in terms of tensor products, generalising results of Saar

    The Use of Phage-Displayed Peptide Libraries to Develop Tumor-Targeting Drugs

    Monoclonal antibodies have been successfully utilized as cancer-targeting therapeutics and diagnostics, but the efficacies of these treatments are limited in part by the size of the molecules and non-specific uptake by the reticuloendothelial system. Peptides are much smaller molecules that can specifically target cancer cells and as such may alleviate complications with antibody therapy. Although many endogenous and exogenous peptides have been developed into clinical therapeutics, only a subset of these consists of cancer-targeting peptides. Combinatorial biological libraries such as bacteriophage-displayed peptide libraries are a resource of potential ligands for various cancer-related molecular targets. Target-binding peptides can be affinity selected from complex mixtures of billions of displayed peptides on phage and further enriched through the biopanning process. Various cancer-specific ligands have been isolated by in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo screening methods. As several peptides derived from phage-displayed peptide library screenings have been developed into therapeutics in current clinical trials, which validates peptide-targeting potential, the use of phage display to identify cancer-targeting therapeutics should be further exploited

    In a crossover trial left ventricular output (LVO), cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV), and resistance index (RI) of the anterior cerebral artery were compared using Doppler ultrasonography, in eight preterm infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) during conventional mechanical ventilation and high frequency oscillation. LVO was 14% to 18% lower with high frequency oscillation. There were no significant changes in CBFV. On the first day of life there was a trend towards lower RI on high frequency oscillation; the fall in LVO on high frequency oscillation was not related to lung hyperinflation. Changes in ventilation type (from conventional mechanical ventilation to high frequency oscillation, or vice versa) can induce significant LVO changes in preterm infants with RDS

    Abstract. This paper studies the RDF model from a database perspective. From this point of view it is compared with other database models, particularly with graph database models, which are very close in motivations and use cases to RDF. We concentrate on query languages, analyze current RDF trends, and propose the incorporation to RDF query languages of primitives which are not present today, based on the experience and techniques of graph database research.
