Individual addressing and state readout of trapped ions utilizing rf- micromotion
A new scheme for the individual addressing of ions in a trap is described
that does not rely on light beams tightly focused onto only one ion. The scheme
utilizes ion micromotion that may be induced in a linear trap by dc offset
potentials. Thus coupling an individual ion to the globally applied light
fields corresponds to a mere switching of voltages on a suitable set of
compensation electrodes. The proposed scheme is especially suitable for
miniaturized rf (Paul) traps with typical dimensions of about 20-40 microns.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure
Comparative Value-relevance of GAAP, IBES, S&P Core, Cash Earnings and Cash Flows
This study examines the impact the global financial crisis had on the value relevance of GAAP and non-GAAP earnings. We adopt the Ohlson (1995) valuation and CAR models to test the value relevance and information content of alternative earnings measures. We use six different earnings measures comprising IBES earnings, Standard & Poor’s (S&P) core earnings, cash earnings, cash flows from operations, earnings from operations adjusted to exclude special items under GAAP and income before extraordinary items under GAAP. We draw our sample from US publicly traded firms between 2002 and 2010. Our sample is partitioned into Financial and non-Financial firms, and S&P 500 and non-S&P 500 firms. The results show that investors place greater value relevance on GAAP earnings during the GFC period relative to the pre-GFC period
Sympathetic Cooling of Trapped Cd+ Isotopes
We sympathetically cool a trapped 112Cd+ ion by directly Doppler-cooling a
114Cd+ ion in the same trap. This is the first demonstration of optically
addressing a single trapped ion being sympathetically cooled by a different
species ion. Notably, the experiment uses a single laser source, and does not
require strong focusing. This paves the way toward reducing decoherence in an
ion trap quantum computer based on Cd+ isotopes.Comment: 4 figure
Yang-Lee and Fisher Zeros of Multisite Interaction Ising Models on the Cayley-type Lattices
A general analytical formula for recurrence relations of multisite
interaction Ising models in an external magnetic field on the Cayley-type
lattices is derived. Using the theory of complex analytical dynamics on the
Riemann sphere, a numerical algorithm to obtain Yang-Lee and Fisher zeros of
the models is developed. It is shown that the sets of Yang-Lee and Fisher zeros
are almost always fractals, that could be associated with Mandelbrot-like sets
on the complex magnetic field and temperature planes respectively.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures; with minor correction
Reexamination of the long-range Potts model: a multicanonical approach
We investigate the critical behavior of the one-dimensional q-state Potts
model with long-range (LR) interaction , using a multicanonical
algorithm. The recursion scheme initially proposed by Berg is improved so as to
make it suitable for a large class of LR models with unequally spaced energy
levels. The choice of an efficient predictor and a reliable convergence
criterion is discussed. We obtain transition temperatures in the first-order
regime which are in far better agreement with mean-field predictions than in
previous Monte Carlo studies. By relying on the location of spinodal points and
resorting to scaling arguments, we determine the threshold value
separating the first- and second-order regimes to two-digit precision within
the range . We offer convincing numerical evidence supporting

Dairy foods, calcium, and risk of breast cancer overall and for subtypes defined by estrogen receptor status: a pooled analysis of 21 cohort studies
Background: Epidemiologic studies examining the relations between dairy product and calcium intakes and breast cancer have been inconclusive, especially for tumor subtypes. Objective: To evaluate the associations between intakes of specific dairy products and calcium and risk of breast cancer overall and for subtypes defined by estrogen receptor (ER) status. Method: We pooled the individual-level data of over 1 million women who were followed for a maximum of 8-20 years across studies. Associations were evaluated for dairy product and calcium intakes and risk of incident invasive breast cancer overall (n = 37,861 cases) and by subtypes defined by ER status. Study-specific multivariable hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated and then combined using random-effects models. Results: Overall, no clear association was observed between the consumption of specific dairy foods, dietary (from foods only) calcium, and total (from foods and supplements) calcium, and risk of overall breast cancer. Although each dairy product showed a null or very weak inverse association with risk of overall breast cancer (P, test for trend >0.05 for all), differences by ER status were suggested for yogurt and cottage/ricotta cheese with associations observed for ER-negative tumors only (pooled HR = 0.90, 95% CI: 0.83, 0.98 comparing >= 60 g/d with = 25 g/d with Conclusion: Our study shows that adult dairy or calcium consumption is unlikely to associate with a higher risk of breast cancer and that higher yogurt and cottage/ricotta cheese intakes were inversely associated with the risk of ER-negative breast cancer, a less hormonally dependent subtype with poor prognosis. Future studies on fermented dairy products, earlier life exposures, ER-negative breast cancer, and different racial/ethnic populations may further elucidate the relation
Test of Lorentz and CPT violation with Short Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Excesses
The sidereal time dependence of MiniBooNE electron neutrino and anti-electron
neutrino appearance data are analyzed to search for evidence of Lorentz and CPT
violation. An unbinned Kolmogorov-Smirnov test shows both the electron neutrino
and anti-electron neutrino appearance data are compatible with the null
sidereal variation hypothesis to more than 5%. Using an unbinned likelihood fit
with a Lorentz-violating oscillation model derived from the Standard Model
Extension (SME) to describe any excess events over background, we find that the
electron neutrino appearance data prefer a sidereal time-independent solution,
and the anti-electron neutrino appearance data slightly prefer a sidereal
time-dependent solution. Limits of order 10E-20 GeV are placed on combinations
of SME coefficients. These limits give the best limits on certain SME
coefficients for muon neutrino to electron neutrino and anti-muon neutrino to
anti-electron neutrino oscillations. The fit values and limits of combinations
of SME coefficients are provided.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, and 2 tables, submitted to Physics Letters
