    Recruitment of Veterinarians for Rural Communities through Education: The Veterinary Training Program for Rural Kansas

    Veterinarians are important members of rural communities and provide valuable services to both community members and the food production systems in these areas. The population of new veterinary graduates entering rural, mixed animal practice is decreasing and several studies have concluded that a shortage of veterinarians in this area is apparent. The Veterinary Training Program for Rural Kansas (VTPRK) was created to address the educational and financial needs of students entering practice in rural Kansas. The program provides a forgivable loan for a select group of students during veterinary school and specific courses to help prepare these students for success in rural practice

    Brookfield powder flow tester - Results of round robin tests with CRM-116 limestone powder

    A low cost powder flowability tester for industry has been developed at The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, University of Greenwich in collaboration with Brookfield Engineering and four food manufacturers: Cadbury, Kerry Ingredients, GSK and United Biscuits. Anticipated uses of the tester are primarily for quality control and new product development, but it can also be used for storage vessel design. This paper presents the preliminary results from ‘round robin’ trials undertaken with the powder flow tester using the BCR limestone (CRM-116) standard test material. The mean flow properties have been compared to published data found in the literature for the other shear testers

    Self-consistent model of ultracold atomic collisions and Feshbach resonances in tight harmonic traps

    We consider the problem of cold atomic collisions in tight traps, where the absolute scattering length may be larger than the trap size. As long as the size of the trap ground state is larger than a characteristic length of the van der Waals potential, the energy eigenvalues can be computed self-consistently from the scattering amplitude for untrapped atoms. By comparing with the exact numerical eigenvalues of the trapping plus interatomic potentials, we verify that our model gives accurate eigenvalues up to milliKelvin energies for single channel s-wave scattering of 23^{23}Na atoms in an isotropic harmonic trap, even when outside the Wigner threshold regime. Our model works also for multi-channel scattering, where the scattering length can be made large due to a magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures (PostScript), submitted to Physical Review

    Turbulent burning rates of gasoline components, Part 2-Effect of carbon number

    Experimental measurements of turbulent and laminar burning velocities have been made for premixed hydrocarbon–air flames of straight chain molecules of increasing carbon number (from n-pentane to n-octane). Measurements were performed at 0.5 MPa, 360 K and rms turbulent velocities of 2 and 6 m/s, for a range of equivalence ratios. The laminar burning velocities were used to interpret the turbulent data, but were also found to be broadly in line with those of previous workers. At lean conditions the turbulent burning velocity was measured to be similar between the four alkanes studied. However, at rich conditions there were notable differences between the turbulent burn rates of the fuels. The equivalence ratio of the mixtures at which the maximum burning velocities occurred in the turbulent flames was richer than that under laminar conditions. The equivalence ratio of the peak turbulent burning velocity was found to be a function of the carbon number of the fuel and the turbulent intensity and became gradually fuel rich with increases in each of these values

    Precambrian non-marine stromatolites in alluvial fan deposits, the Copper Harbor Conglomerate, upper Michigan

    Laminated cryptalgal carbonates occur in the Precambrian Copper Harbor Conglomerate of northern Michigan, which was deposited in the Keweenawan Trough, an aborted proto-oceanic rift. This unit is composed of three major facies deposited by braided streams on a large alluvial-fan complex. Coarse clastics were deposited in braided channels, predominantly as longitudinal bars, whereas cross-bedded sandstones were deposited by migrating dunes or linguoid bars. Fine-grained overbank deposits accumulated in abandoned channels. Gypsum moulds and carbonate-filled cracks suggest an arid climate during deposition. Stromatolites interstratified with these clastic facies occur as laterally linked drapes over cobbles, as laterally linked contorted beds in mudstone, as oncolites, and as poorly developed mats in coarse sandstones. Stromatolites also are interbedded with oolitic beds and intraclastic conglomerates. Stromatolitic microstructure consists of alternating detrital and carbonate laminae, and open-space structures. Radial-fibrous calcite fans are superimposed on the laminae. The laminae are interpreted as algal in origin, whereas the origin of the radial fibrous calcite is problematic. The stromatolites are inferred to have grown in lakes which occupied abandoned channels on the fan surface. Standing water on a permeable alluvial fan in an arid climate requires a high water table maintained by high precipitation, or local elevation of the water table, possibly due to the close proximity of a lake. Occurrence of stromatolites in the upper part of the Copper Harbor Conglomerate near the base of the lacustrine Nonesuch Shale suggests that these depositional sites may have been near the Nonesuch Lake.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72022/1/j.1365-3091.1983.tb00713.x.pd

    Tests of sunspot number sequences: 1. Using ionosonde data

    More than 70 years ago it was recognised that ionospheric F2-layer critical frequencies [foF2] had a strong relationship to sunspot number. Using historic datasets from the Slough and Washington ionosondes, we evaluate the best statistical fits of foF2 to sunspot numbers (at each Universal Time [UT] separately) in order to search for drifts and abrupt changes in the fit residuals over Solar Cycles 17-21. This test is carried out for the original composite of the Wolf/ZĂŒrich/International sunspot number [R], the new “backbone” group sunspot number [RBB] and the proposed “corrected sunspot number” [RC]. Polynomial fits are made both with and without allowance for the white-light facular area, which has been reported as being associated with cycle-to-cycle changes in the sunspot number - foF2 relationship. Over the interval studied here, R, RBB, and RC largely differ in their allowance for the “Waldmeier discontinuity” around 1945 (the correction factor for which for R, RBB and RC is, respectively, zero, effectively over 20 %, and explicitly 11.6 %). It is shown that for Solar Cycles 18-21, all three sunspot data sequences perform well, but that the fit residuals are lowest and most uniform for RBB. We here use foF2 for those UTs for which R, RBB, and RC all give correlations exceeding 0.99 for intervals both before and after the Waldmeier discontinuity. The error introduced by the Waldmeier discontinuity causes R to underestimate the fitted values based on the foF2 data for 1932-1945 but RBB overestimates them by almost the same factor, implying that the correction for the Waldmeier discontinuity inherent in RBB is too large by a factor of two. Fit residuals are smallest and most uniform for RC and the ionospheric data support the optimum discontinuity multiplicative correction factor derived from the independent Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) sunspot group data for the same interval

    RAB11FIP5 Expression and Altered Natural Killer Cell Function Are Associated with Induction of HIV Broadly Neutralizing Antibody Responses

    HIV-1 broadly neutralizing antibodies (bnAbs) are difficult to induce with vaccines but are generated in ∌50% of HIV-1-infected individuals. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of host control of bnAb induction is critical to vaccine design. Here, we performed a transcriptome analysis of blood mononuclear cells from 47 HIV-1-infected individuals who made bnAbs and 46 HIV-1-infected individuals who did not and identified in bnAb individuals upregulation of RAB11FIP5, encoding a Rab effector protein associated with recycling endosomes. Natural killer (NK) cells had the highest differential expression of RAB11FIP5, which was associated with greater dysregulation of NK cell subsets in bnAb subjects. NK cells from bnAb individuals had a more adaptive/dysfunctional phenotype and exhibited impaired degranulation and cytokine production that correlated with RAB11FIP5 transcript levels. Moreover, RAB11FIP5 overexpression modulated the function of NK cells. These data suggest that NK cells and Rab11 recycling endosomal transport are involved in regulation of HIV-1 bnAb development. Generation of broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV-1 in humans is linked to the expression of a specific recycling endosome-associated effector in natural killer cells
