Coupling to haloform molecules in intercalated C60?
For field-effect-doped fullerenes it was reported that the superconducting
transition temperature Tc is markedly larger for C60.2CHX_3 (X=Cl, Br)
crystals, than for pure C60. Initially this was explained by the expansion of
the volume per C60-molecule and the corresponding increase in the density of
states at the Fermi level in the intercalated crystals. On closer examination
it has, however, turned out to be unlikely that this is the mechanism behind
the increase in Tc. An alternative explanation of the enhanced transition
temperatures assumes that the conduction electrons not only couple to the
vibrational modes of the C60-molecule, but also to the modes of the
intercalated molecules. We investigate the possibility of such a coupling. We
find that, assuming the ideal bulk structure of the intercalated crystal, both
a coupling due to hybridization of the molecular levels, and a coupling via
dipole moments should be very small. This suggests that the presence of the
gate-oxide in the field-effect-devices strongly affects the structure of the
fullerene crystal at the interface.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, to be published in PRB (rapid communication
Keratoacanthoma management: results of a survey of UK dermatologists and surgeons.
Distinction of keratoacanthoma (KA) from squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is challenging. Management is controversial, with some advocating prompt surgical excision and others monitoring to allow for spontaneous resolution(1) . The controversy is compounded by rare reports of metastasis(2) . And yet the benign natural history of KA is supported by various studies, including a systematic review of 455 cases with no cases of metastasis or death(1) , and observational studies confirming spontaneous resolution(1)
Exact Path-Integral Representations for the -Matrix in Nonrelativistic Potential Scattering
Several path integral representations for the -matrix in nonrelativistic
potential scattering are given which produce the complete Born series when
expanded to all orders and the eikonal approximation if the quantum
fluctuations are suppressed. They are obtained with the help of "phantom"
degrees of freedom which take away explicit phases that diverge for asymptotic
times. Energy conservation is enforced by imposing a Faddeev-Popov-like
constraint in the velocity path integral. An attempt is made to evaluate
stochastically the real-time path integral for potential scattering and
generalizations to relativistic scattering are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures. Contribution to the workshop "Relativistic

Short-Range Interactions and Scaling Near Integer Quantum Hall Transitions
We study the influence of short-range electron-electron interactions on
scaling behavior near the integer quantum Hall plateau transitions. Short-range
interactions are known to be irrelevant at the renormalization group fixed
point which represents the transition in the non-interacting system. We find,
nevertheless, that transport properties change discontinuously when
interactions are introduced. Most importantly, in the thermodynamic limit the
conductivity at finite temperature is zero without interactions, but non-zero
in the presence of arbitrarily weak interactions. In addition, scaling as a
function of frequency, , and temperature, , is determined by the
scaling variable (where is the exponent for the temperature
dependence of the inelastic scattering rate) and not by , as it would
be at a conventional quantum phase transition described by an interacting fixed
point. We express the inelastic exponent, , and the thermal exponent, ,
in terms of the scaling dimension, , of the interaction strength
and the dynamical exponent (which has the value ), obtaining

Rayleigh Scattering in Rare Gas Liquids
The Rayleigh scattering length has been calculated for rare-gas liquids in
the ultraviolet for the frequencies at which they luminesce. The calculations
are based on the measured dielectric constants in the gas phase, except in the
case of xenon for which measurements are available in the liquid. The
scattering length mayplace constraints on the design of some large-scale
detectors, using uv luminescence, being proposed to observe solar neutrinos and
dark matter. Rayleigh scattering in mixtures of rare-gas mixtures is also
discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 4 tables; This version corrects erratum in table and has

A single-step sizing and radiofrequency ablation catheter for circumferential ablation of Barrett's esophagus: Results of a pilot study
Background: The 360 Express balloon catheter (360 Express) has the ability to self-adjust to the esophageal lumen, ensuring optimal tissue contact. Objective: The objective of this article is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the 360 Express for radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment of Barrett's esophagus (BE). Methods: BE patients with low-grade dysplasia (LGD), high-grade dysplasia (HGD) or early cancer (EC) were included. Visible lesions were removed by endoscopic resection (ER) prior to RFA. RFA was performed with the 360 Express using the standard ablation regimen (12J/cm2–clean–12J/cm2). Primary outcome: BE regression percentage at three months. Secondary outcomes: procedure time, adverse events, complete eradication of dysplasia (CE-D) and intestinal metaplasia (CE-IM). Results: Thirty patients (median BE C4M6) were included. Eight patients underwent ER prior to RFA. Median BE regression: 90%. Median procedure time: 31 minutes. Adverse events (13%): laceration (n = 1); atrial fibrillation (n = 1); vomiting and dysphagia (n = 1); dysregulated diabetes (n = 1). After subsequent treatment CE-D and CE-IM was achieved in 97% and 87%, respectively. In 10% a stenosis developed during additional treatment requiring a median of one dilation. Conclusion: This study shows that circumferential RFA using the 360 Express may shorten procedure time, while maintaining efficacy compared to standard circumferential RFA

Finite Element Analysis Of The Equivalent Stress Distribution In Schanz Screws During The Use Of A Femoral Fracture Distractor
To evaluate the mechanical stress and elastic deformation exercised in the thread/shaft transition of Schanz screws in assemblies with different screw anchorage distances in the entrance to the bone cortex, through the distribution and location of tension in the samples. An analysis of 3. D finite elements was performed to evaluate the distribution of the equivalent stress (triple stress state) in a Schanz screw fixed bicortically and orthogonally to a tubular bone, using two mounting patterns: (1) thread/shaft transition located 20. mm from the anchorage of the Schanz screws in the entrance to the bone cortex and (2) thread/shaft transition located 3. mm from the anchorage of the Schanz screws in entrance to the bone cortex. The simulations were performed maintaining the same direction of loading and the same distance from the force vector in relation to the center of the hypothetical bone. The load applied, its direction, and the distance to the center of the bone were constant during the simulations in order to maintain the moment of flexion equally constant. The present calculations demonstrated linear behavior during the experiment. It was found that the model with a distance of 20. mm between the Schanz screws anchorage in the entrance to the bone cortex and the thread/shaft transition reduces the risk of breakage or fatigue of the material during the application of constant static loads; in this model. the maximum forces observed were higher (350. Mpa). The distance between the Schanz screws anchorage at the entrance to the bone cortex and the smooth thread/shaft transition of the screws used in a femoral distractor during acute distraction of a fracture must be farther from the entrance to the bone cortex, allowing greater degree of elastic deformation of the material, lower mechanical stress in the thread/shaft transition, and minimized breakage or fatigue. The suggested distance is 20. mm. © 2016 Sociedade Brasileira de Ortopedia e Traumatologia
Comparison of the Effects of Two Topical Fluoride Regimens on Demineralized Enamel in vivo
The purpose of this investigation was to study the intra-oral remineralization of acid-softened enamel by a NaF dentifrice compared with that from a combination of topical F agents. Bovine enamel slabs were demineralized with 0.1 mol/L lactic acid at pH 4.0 for 14 hr and then mounted in a removable mandibular appliance. Control slabs were worn for 96 hr by seven adult males who brushed daily with a F-free dentifrice. Test slabs were brushed with a NaF dentifrice 4 x / day or with the same dentifrice 4 x /day and a 0.02% APF mouthrinse and a 0.4% SnF2 gel which were applied oncelday for three days. The natural dentition was also brushed with the NaF dentifrice during both test periods. Microhardness testing was performed on sound enamel, and after acid-softening, intra-oral exposure (IOE), and acid resistance testing (ART) in 0.01 mol/L lactic acid at pH 4.0 for 24 hr. Control and test slabs were etched with 0.5 mol/L HClO4 for from 15 to 60 sec. The F content was measured with a F electrode and PO4 by spectrophotometry. Contact microradiography and image analyses were performed on control and test slabs so that changes in mineral content resulting from treatment could be assessed. Both test groups were significantly harder after both IOE and ART than were controls, but no differences appeared between the effects of the two test groups. The F content of control slabs was significantly less than that of both test groups, and the combination-treated slabs showed greater F than did the dentifrice-treated slabs. Microradiographs revealed a higher mineral content in the basal 2/3 of combination-treated lesions, while diffuse mineral deposition occurred, especially subjacent to the surface in the dentifrice-treated lesions. Control lesions showed little added mineral.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/66793/2/10.1177_00220345880670061301.pd
Isospin splitting in heavy baryons and mesons
A recent general analysis of light-baryon isospin splittings is updated and
extended to charmed baryons.
The measured and splittings stand out as being difficult
to understand in terms of two-body forces alone.
We also discuss heavy-light mesons; though the framework here is necessarily
less general, we nevertheless obtain some predictions that are not strongly
model-dependent.Comment: 12 pages REVTEX 3, plus 4 uuencoded ps figures, CMU-HEP93-
