Avaliação de adsorventes sólidos para determinação de pesticidas organoclorados e bifenilos policlorados na atmosfera marinha
A sampling system was developed to be used in coastal areas and on board of océanographie vessels for the determination of chlorinated pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in the atmosphere. The basis of the system is the pre-concentration step on solid adsorbents. Florisil, XAD-2 resin and polyurethane foam (PUF) were tested. The sampling efficiency presented variations between 16-118% (florisil), 41131% (XAD-2) and 66-122% (PUF) depending on the organochlorine compound.Um sistema de amostragem foi desenvolvido para ser usado em áreas costeiras e a bordo de embarcações oceanográficas para a determinação de pesticidas organoclorados e bifenilos policlorados (PCBs) na atmosfera. Time-Symmetrization and Isotropization of Stiff-Fluid Kantowski-Sachs Universes
It is shown that growing-entropy stiff-fluid Kantowski-Sachs universes become
time-symmetric (if they start with time-asymmetric phase) and isotropize.
Isotropization happens without any inflationary era during the evolution since
there is no cosmological term here. It seems that this approach is an
alternative to inflation since the universe gets bigger and bigger approaching

Design, synthesis and characterization of linear unnatural amino acids for skin moisturization
Objectives
This work aimed to design, synthesize and characterize replacement natural moisturizing factor (NMF) composed of modified hygroscopic linear amino acids to pre-empt or repair skin barrier dysfunction.
Methods
Following synthesis and characterization, thermo-gravimetric analysis and quantum mechanics molecular modelling quantified and depicted water binding to the new compounds. Deliquescence relative humidity demonstrated the water-scavenging ability of the compounds, whereas snake skin moisturizing studies showed they increased water uptake into snake skin.
Results
From thermal analysis, N-hydroxyglycine showed greatest water-holding capacity followed by N-hydroxyserine, l-homoserine and α-hydroxyglycine; coupled with quantum mechanics molecular modelling, between 8 and 12 molecules of water could associate with each molecule of either N-hydroxyglycine, N-hydroxyserine or l-homoserine. All of our modified amino acids were efficacious and induced similar or greater water uptake compared with the established moisturizing compounds hyaluronic acid, glycerine and urea in snake skin. Incorporated at 10% in Oilatum, N-hydroxyserine induced >200% greater moisture uptake into dry snake skin compared to treatment with water alone, with efficacy related to the molecule structure and ability to bind to 12 water molecules. Oilatum cream spiked with all our unnatural amino acid hydrotropes increased water uptake into snake skin compared with Oilatum alone.
The compound series was designed to elucidate some structure – efficacy relationships. Amino acid chirality did not affect the water-holding capacity but did affect uptake into skin. Compounds with high melting points and bond energies tended to decrease water-holding capacity. With isosteric replacement, the more electronegative atoms gave greater water-holding capacities.
Conclusions
This work demonstrates the potential of unnatural amino acid hydrotropes as skin moisturizers and has developed some predictive ‘rules’ for further design and refinement of chemical structures
Density of states and magnetoconductance of disordered Au point contacts
We report the first low temperature magnetotransport measurements on
electrochemically fabricated atomic scale gold nanojunctions. As , the
junctions exhibit nonperturbatively large zero bias anomalies (ZBAs) in their
differential conductance. We consider several explanations and find that the
ZBAs are consistent with a reduced local density of states (LDOS) in the
disordered metal. We suggest that this is a result of Coulomb interactions in a
granular metal with moderate intergrain coupling. Magnetoconductance of atomic
scale junctions also differs significantly from that of less geometrically

Transgenerational modification of dopaminergic dysfunctions induced by maternal immune activation
Prenatal exposure to infectious and/or inflammatory insults is increasingly recognized to contribute to the etiology of psychiatric disorders with neurodevelopmental components. Recent research using animal models suggests that maternal immune activation (MIA) can induce transgenerational effects on brain and behavior, possibly through epigenetic mechanisms. Using a mouse model of MIA that is based on gestational treatment with the viral mimeticpoly(I:C) (=polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidilicacid), the present study explored whether the transgenerational effects of MIA are extendable to dopaminergic dysfunctions. We show that the direct descendants born to poly(I:C)-treated mothers display signs of hyperdopaminergia, as manifested by a potentiated sensitivity to the locomotor-stimulating effects of amphetamine (Amph) and increased expression of tyrosine hydroxylase (Th) in the adult ventral midbrain. In stark contrast, second- and third-generation offspring of MIA-exposed ancestors displayed blunted locomotor responses to Amph and reduced expression ofTh. Furthermore, we found increased DNA methylation at the promoter region of the dopamine-specifying factor, nuclear receptor-related 1 protein (Nurr1), in the sperm of first-generation MIA offspring and in the ventral midbrain of second-generation offspring of MIA-exposed ancestors. The latter effect was further accompanied by reduced mRNA levels of Nurr1 in this brain region. Together, our results suggest that MIA has the potential to modify dopaminergic functions across multiple generations with opposite effects in the direct descendants and their progeny. The presence of altered DNA methylation in the sperm of MIA-exposed offspring highlights the possibility that epigenetic processes in the male germline play a role in the transgenerational effects of MIA.Therapeutic cell differentiatio
Spontaneous Magnetization and Electron Momentum Density in 3D Quantum Dots
We discuss an exactly solvable model Hamiltonian for describing the
interacting electron gas in a quantum dot. Results for a spherical square well
confining potential are presented. The ground state is found to exhibit
striking oscillations in spin polarization with dot radius at a fixed electron
density. These oscillations are shown to induce characteristic signatures in
the momentum density of the electron gas, providing a novel route for direct
experimental observation of the dot magnetization via spectroscopies sensitive

Energy landscape, two-level systems and entropy barriers in Lennard-Jones clusters
We develop an efficient numerical algorithm for the identification of a large
number of saddle points of the potential energy function of Lennard- Jones
clusters. Knowledge of the saddle points allows us to find many thousand
adjacent minima of clusters containing up to 80 argon atoms and to locate many
pairs of minima with the right characteristics to form two-level systems (TLS).
The true TLS are singled out by calculating the ground-state tunneling
splitting. The entropic contribution to all barriers is evaluated and
