    In this paper a biologically-inspired model for partly occluded patterns is proposed. The model is based on the hypothesis that in human visual system occluding patterns play a key role in recognition as well as in reconstructing internal representation for a pattern’s occluding parts. The proposed model is realized with a bidirectional hierarchical neural network. In this network top-down cues, generated by direct connections from the lower to higher levels of hierarchy, interact with the bottom-up information, generated from the un-occluded parts, to recognize occluded patterns. Moreover, positional cues of the occluded as well as occluding patterns, that are computed separately but in the same network, modulate the top-down and bottom-up processing to reconstruct the occluded patterns. Simulation results support the presented hypothesis as well as effectiveness of the model in providing a solution to recognition of occluded patterns. The behavior of the model is in accordance to the known human behavior on the occluded patterns

    We study the Abelian projection of an instanton in R3×S1R^3 \times S^1 as a function of temperature (T) and non-trivial holonomic twist (ω\omega) of the Polyakov loop at infinity.     The intra- and interrater reliability of the action research arm test: A practical test of upper extremity function in patients with stroke

    Objectives: To determine the intra- and interrater reliability of the Action Research Arm (ARA) test, to assess its ability to detect a minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of 5.7 points, and to identify less reliable test items. Design: Intrarater reliability of the sum scores and of individual items was assessed by comparing (1) the ratings of the laboratory measurements of 20 patients with the ratings of the same measurements recorded on videotape by the original rater, and (2) the repeated ratings of videotaped measurements by the same rater. Interrater reliability was assessed by comparing the ratings of the videotaped measurements of 2 raters. The resulting limits of agreement were compared with the MCID. Patients: Stratified sample, based on the intake ARA score, of 20 chronic stroke patients (median age, 62yr; median time since stroke onset, 3.6yr; mean intake ARA score, 29.2). Main Outcome Measures: Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient (Spearman's rho); intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC); mean difference and limits of agreement, based on ARA sum scores; and weighted kappa, based on individual items. Results: All intra- and interrater Spearman's rho and ICC values were higher than .98. The mean difference between ratings was highest for the interrater pair (.75; 95% confidence interval, .02-1.48), suggesting a small systematic difference between raters. Intrarater limits of agreement were -1.66 to 2.26; interrater limits of agreement were -2.35 to 3.85. Median weighted kappas exceeded .92. Conclusion: The high intra- and interrater reliability of the ARA test was confirmed, as was its ability to detect a clinically relevant difference of 5.7 points

    Experimental Control and Characterization of Autophagy in Drosophila

    Insects such as the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, which fundamentally reorganize their body plan during metamorphosis, make extensive use of autophagy for their normal development and physiology. In the fruit fly, the hepatic/adipose organ known as the fat body accumulates nutrient stores during the larval feeding stage. Upon entering metamorphosis, as well as in response to starvation, these nutrients are mobilized through a massive induction of autophagy, providing support to other tissues and organs during periods of nutrient deprivation. High levels of autophagy are also observed in larval tissues destined for elimination, such as the salivary glands and larval gut. Drosophila is emerging as an important system for studying the functions and regulation of autophagy in an in vivo setting. In this chapter we describe reagents and methods for monitoring autophagy in Drosophila, focusing on the larval fat body. We also describe methods for experimentally activating and inhibiting autophagy in this system and discuss the potential for genetic analysis in Drosophila to identify novel genes involved in autophagy

    Nonequilibrium Green's function theory for transport and gain properties of quantum cascade structures

    The transport and gain properties of quantum cascade (QC) structures are investigated using a nonequilibrium Green's function (NGF) theory which includes quantum effects beyond a Boltzmann transport description. In the NGF theory, we include interface roughness, impurity, and electron-phonon scattering processes within a self-consistent Born approximation, and electron-electron scattering in a mean-field approximation. With this theory we obtain a description of the nonequilibrium stationary state of QC structures under an applied bias, and hence we determine transport properties, such as the current-voltage characteristic of these structures. We define two contributions to the current, one contribution driven by the scattering-free part of the Hamiltonian, and the other driven by the scattering Hamiltonian. We find that the dominant part of the current in these structures, in contrast to simple superlattice structures, is governed mainly by the scattering Hamiltonian. In addition, by considering the linear response of the stationary state of the structure to an applied optical field, we determine the linear susceptibility, and hence the gain or absorption spectra of the structure. A comparison of the spectra obtained from the more rigorous NGF theory with simpler models shows that the spectra tend to be offset to higher values in the simpler theories.Comment: 44 pages, 16 figures, appearing in Physical Review B Dec 200

    Groundwater chemistry in the vicinity of the Puna Geothermal Venture power plant, Hawaii, after two decades of production

The samples were analyzed for major and minor chemical species, trace metals of environmental concern, stable isotopes of water, and two organic compounds (pentane and isopropanol) that are injected into the deep geothermal reservoir at the power plant. Isopropanol was not detected in any of the groundwaters; confirmed detection of pentane was restricted to one monitoring well near the power plant at a low concentration not indicative of source. Thus, neither organic compound linked geothermal operations to groundwater contamination, though chemical stability and transport velocity questions exist for both tracers. Based on our chemical analysis of geothermal fluid at the power plant and on many similar results from commercially analyzed samples, we could not show that geothermal constituents in the groundwaters we sampled came from the commercially developed reservoir. Our data are consistent with a long-held view that heat moves by conduction from the geothermal reservoir into shallow groundwaters through a zone of low permeability rock that blocks passage of geothermal water. The data do not rule out all impacts of geothermal production on groundwater. Removal of heat during production, for example, may be responsible for minor changes that have occurred in some groundwater over time, such as the decline in temperature of one monitoring well near the power plant. Such indirect impacts are much harder to assess, but point out the need for an ongoing groundwater monitoring program that should include the coastal springs down-gradient from the power plant

    Torque magnetometry of an amorphous-alumina/strontium-titanate interface

    We report torque magnetometry measurements of an oxide heterostructure consisting of an amorphous Al2O3 thin film grown on a crystalline SrTiO3 substrate (a-AO/STO) by atomic layer deposition. We find a torque response that resembles previous studies of crystalline LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterointerfaces, consistent with strongly anisotropic magnetic ordering in the plane of the interface. Unlike crystalline LAO, amorphous Al2O3 is nonpolar, indicating that planar magnetism at an oxide interface is possible without the strong internal electric fields generated within the polarization catastrophe model. We discuss our results in the context of current theoretical efforts to explain magnetism in crystalline LAO/STO.Chemistry and Chemical Biolog

    BPS Electromagnetic Waves on Giant Gravitons

    We find new 1/8-BPS giant graviton solutions in AdS5×S5AdS_5 \times S^5, carrying three angular momenta along S5S^5, and investigate their properties. Especially, we show that nonzero worldvolume gauge fields are admitted preserving supersymmetry. These gauge field modes can be viewed as electromagnetic waves along the compact D3 brane, whose Poynting vector contributes to the BPS angular momenta. We also analyze the (nearly-)spherical giant gravitons with worldvolume gauge fields in detail. Expressing the S3S^3 in Hopf fibration (S1S^1 fibred over S2S^2), the wave propagates along the S1S^1 fiber.Comment: 25 pages, no figures, v2: references adde
