GW correlation effects on plutonium quasiparticle energies: changes in crystal-field splitting
We present results for the electronic structure of plutonium by using a
recently developed quasiparticle self-consistent method (\qsgw). We
consider a paramagnetic solution without spin-orbit interaction as a function
of volume for the face-centered cubic (fcc) unit cell. We span unit-cell
volumes ranging from 10% greater than the equilibrium volume of the
phase to 90 % of the equivalent for the phase of Pu. The
self-consistent quasiparticle energies are compared to those obtained
within the Local Density Approximation (LDA). The goal of the calculations is
to understand systematic trends in the effects of electronic correlations on
the quasiparticle energy bands of Pu as a function of the localization of the
orbitals. We show that correlation effects narrow the bands in two
significantly different ways. Besides the expected narrowing of individual
bands (flatter dispersion), we find that an even more significant effect on the
bands is a decrease in the crystal-field splitting of the different bands.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 3 table
A Numerical Investigation of the Effects of Classical Phase Space Structure on a Quantum System
We present a detailed numerical study of a chaotic classical system and its
quantum counterpart. The system is a special case of a kicked rotor and for
certain parameter values possesses cantori dividing chaotic regions of the
classical phase space. We investigate the diffusion of particles through a
cantorus; classical diffusion is observed but quantum diffusion is only
significant when the classical phase space area escaping through the cantorus
per kicking period greatly exceeds Planck's constant. A quantum analysis
confirms that the cantori act as barriers. We numerically estimate the
classical phase space flux through the cantorus per kick and relate this
quantity to the behaviour of the quantum system. We introduce decoherence via
environmental interactions with the quantum system and observe the subsequent
increase in the transport of quantum particles through the boundary.Comment: 15 pages, 22 figure
Leak Rate Quantification Method for Gas Pressure Seals with Controlled Pressure Differential
An enhancement to the pressure decay leak rate method with mass point analysis solved deficiencies in the standard method. By adding a control system, a constant gas pressure differential across the test article was maintained. As a result, the desired pressure condition was met at the onset of the test, and the mass leak rate and measurement uncertainty were computed in real-time. The data acquisition and control system were programmed to automatically stop when specified criteria were met. Typically, the test was stopped when a specified level of measurement uncertainty was attained. Using silicone O-ring test articles, the new method was compared with the standard method that permitted the downstream pressure to be non-constant atmospheric pressure. The two methods recorded comparable leak rates, but the new method recorded leak rates with significantly lower measurement uncertainty, statistical variance, and test duration. Utilizing this new method in leak rate quantification, projects will reduce cost and schedule, improve test results, and ease interpretation between data sets
Guidance for Restarting Inflammatory Bowel Disease Therapy in Patients Who Withheld Immunosuppressant Medications During COVID-19
Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases [IBD] are frequently treated with immunosuppressant medications. During the coronavirus disease 2019 [COVID-19] pandemic, recommendations for IBD management have included that patients should stay on their immunosuppressant medications if they are not infected with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 [SARS-CoV-2], but to temporarily hold these medications if symptomatic with COVID-19 or asymptomatic but have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. As more IBD patients are infected globally, it is important to also understand how to manage IBD medications during convalescence while an individual with IBD is recovering from COVID-19. In this review, we address the differences between a test-based versus a symptoms-based strategy as related to COVID-19, and offer recommendations on when it is appropriate to consider restarting IBD therapy in patients testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 or with clinical symptoms consistent with COVID-19. In general, we recommend a symptoms-based approach, due to the current lack of confidence in the accuracy of available testing and the clinical significance of prolonged detection of virus via molecular testing
Impact of Nitrogen Fertilization and Cropping System on Carbon Sequestration in Midwestern Mollisols
Growing interest in the potential for agricultural soils to provide a sink for atmospheric C has prompted studies of effects of management on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration. We analyzed the impact on SOC of four N fertilization rates (0–270 kg N ha−1) and four cropping systems: continuous corn (CC) (Zea mays L.); corn–soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] (CS); corn–corn–oat–alfalfa (oat, Avena sativa L.; alfalfa, Medicago sativa L.) (CCOA), and corn–oat–alfalfa–alfalfa (COAA). Soils were sampled in 2002, Years 23 and 48 of the experiments located in northeast and north-central Iowa, respectively. The experiments were conducted using a replicated split-plot design under conventional tillage. A native prairie was sampled to provide a reference (for one site only). Cropping systems that contained alfalfa had the highest SOC stocks, whereas the CS system generally had the lowest SOC stocks. Concentrations of SOC increased significantly between 1990 and 2002 in only two of the nine systems for which historical data were available, the fertilized CC and COAA systems at one site. Soil quality indices such as particulate organic carbon (POC) were influenced by cropping system, with CS \u3c CC \u3c CCOA. In the native prairie, SOC, POC, and resistant C concentrations were 2.8, 2.6, and 3.9 times, respectively, the highest values in cropped soil, indicating that cultivated soils had not recovered to precultivation conditions. Although corn yields increased with N additions, N fertilization increased SOC stocks only in the CC system at one site. Considering the C cost for N fertilizer production, N fertilization generally had a net negative effect on C sequestration
Self-energy and Self-force in the Space-time of a Thick Cosmic String
We calculate the self-energy and self-force for an electrically charged
particle at rest in the background of Gott-Hiscock cosmic string space-time. We
found the general expression for the self-energy which is expressed in terms of
the matrix of the scattering problem. The self-energy continuously falls
down outward from the string's center with maximum at the origin of the string.
The self-force is repulsive for an arbitrary position of the particle. It tends
to zero in the string's center and also far from the string and it has a
maximum value at the string's surface. The plots of the numerical calculations
of the self-energy and self-force are shown.Comment: 15 pages, 4 Postscript figures, ReVTe
A NuSTAR Survey of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies
We present a Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), Chandra, and XMM-Newton survey of nine of the nearest ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The unprecedented sensitivity of NuSTAR at energies above 10 keV enables spectral modeling with far better precision than was previously possible. Six of the nine sources observed were detected sufficiently well by NuSTAR to model in detail their broadband X-ray spectra, and recover the levels of obscuration and intrinsic X-ray luminosities. Only one source (IRAS 13120–5453) has a spectrum consistent with a Compton-thick active galactic nucleus (AGN), but we cannot rule out that a second source (Arp 220) harbors an extremely highly obscured AGN as well. Variability in column density (reduction by a factor of a few compared to older observations) is seen in IRAS 05189–2524 and Mrk 273, altering the classification of these borderline sources from Compton-thick to Compton-thin. The ULIRGs in our sample have surprisingly low observed fluxes in high-energy (>10 keV) X-rays, especially compared to their bolometric luminosities. They have lower ratios of unabsorbed 2–10 keV to bolometric luminosity, and unabsorbed 2–10 keV to mid-IR [O iv] line luminosity than do Seyfert 1 galaxies. We identify IRAS 08572+3915 as another candidate intrinsically X-ray weak source, similar to Mrk 231. We speculate that the X-ray weakness of IRAS 08572+3915 is related to its powerful outflow observed at other wavelengths
Holography and trace anomaly: what is the fate of (brane-world) black holes?
The holographic principle relates (classical) gravitational waves in the bulk
to quantum fluctuations and the Weyl anomaly of a conformal field theory on the
boundary (the brane). One can thus argue that linear perturbations in the bulk
of static black holes located on the brane be related to the Hawking flux and
that (brane-world) black holes are therefore unstable. We try to gain some
information on such instability from established knowledge of the Hawking
radiation on the brane. In this context, the well-known trace anomaly is used
as a measure of both the validity of the holographic picture and of the
instability for several proposed static brane metrics. In light of the above
analysis, we finally consider a time-dependent metric as the (approximate)
representation of the late stage of evaporating black holes which is
characterized by decreasing Hawking temperature, in qualitative agreement with
what is required by energy conservation.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, a few comments and references added, accepted

An action for the exact string black hole
A local action is constructed describing the exact string black hole
discovered by Dijkgraaf, Verlinde and Verlinde in 1992. It turns out to be a
special 2D Maxwell-dilaton gravity theory, linear in curvature and field
strength. Two constants of motion exist: mass M>1, determined by the level k,
and U(1)-charge Q>0, determined by the value of the dilaton at the origin. ADM
mass, Hawking temperature T_H \propto \sqrt{1-1/M} and Bekenstein-Hawking
entropy are derived and studied in detail. Winding/momentum mode duality
implies the existence of a similar action, arising from a branch ambiguity,
which describes the exact string naked singularity. In the strong coupling
limit the solution dual to AdS_2 is found to be the 5D Schwarzschild black
hole. Some applications to black hole thermodynamics and 2D string theory are
discussed and generalizations - supersymmetric extension, coupling to matter
and critical collapse, quantization - are pointed out.Comment: 41 pages, 2 eps figures, dedicated to Wolfgang Kummer on occasion of
