Antibody responses to nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in adults: A longitudinal household study
Background. Natural immunity to Streptococcus pneumoniae is thought to be induced by exposure to S. pneumoniae or cross-reactive antigens. No longitudinal studies of carriage of and immune responses to S. pneumoniae have been conducted using sophisticated immunological laboratory techniques.Methods. We enrolled 121 families with young children into this study. Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs were collected monthly for 10 months from all family members and were cultured in a standard fashion. Cultured S. pneumoniae isolates were serotyped. At the beginning (month 0) and end (month 10) of the study, venous blood was collected from family members 118 years old. Serotype-specific antipolysaccharide immunoglobulin G (IgG) and functional antibody and antibodies to pneumolysin, pneumococcal surface protein A (PspA), and pneumococcal surface antigen A (PsaA) were measured in paired serum samples.Results. Levels of anticapsular IgG increased significantly after carriage of serotypes 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F by an individual or family member. For serotype 14, a higher level of anticapsular IgG at the beginning of the study was associated with reduced odds of carriage (P = .0006). There was a small (similar to 20%) but significant increase in titers of antibodies to PsaA and pneumolysin but no change in titers of antibody to PspA.Conclusions. Adults respond to NP carriage by mounting anticapsular and weak antiprotein antibody responses, and naturally induced anticapsular IgG can prevent carriage
Exciton spectroscopy of hexagonal boron nitride using non-resonant x-ray Raman scattering
We report non-resonant x-ray Raman scattering (XRS) measurements from
hexagonal boron nitride for transferred momentum from 2 to 9
along directions both in and out of the basal plane. A
symmetry-based argument, together with real-space full multiple scattering
calculations of the projected density of states in the spherical harmonics
basis, reveals that a strong pre-edge feature is a dominantly -type
Frenkel exciton with no other \textit{s}-, \textit{p}-, or \textit{d}-
components. This conclusion is supported by a second, independent calculation
of the \textbf{q}-dependent XRS cross-section based on the Bethe-Salpeter
equation
GINZBURG-LANDAU THEORY OF VORTICES IN -WAVE SUPERCONDUCTORS
Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to study the properties of single vortices and
of the Abrikosov vortex lattice in a superconductor. For a single
vortex, the -wave order parameter has the expected four-lobe structure in a
ring around the core and falls off like at large distances. The
topological structure of the -wave order parameter consists of one
counter-rotating unit vortex, centered at the core, surrounded by four
symmetrically placed positive unit vortices. The Abrikosov lattice is shown to
have a triangular structure close to and an oblique structure at lower

Abnormal protein aggregation and intracellular or extracellular accumulation of misfolded and aggregated proteins are key events in the pathogenesis of different neurodegenerative diseases. Furthermore, endoplasmic reticulum stress and impairment of the ubiquitin-proteasome system probably contribute to neurodegeneration in these diseases. A characteristic feature of AD (Alzheimer's disease) is the abnormal accumulation of Abeta (amyloid beta-peptide) in the brain. Evidence shows that the AD-associated PS (presenilin) also forms aggregates under certain conditions and that another AD-associated protein, ubiquilin-1, controls protein aggregation and deposition of aggregated proteins. Here, we review the current knowledge of ubiquilin-1 and PS in protein aggregation and related events that potentially influence neurodegeneration
Understanding the effect of cognitive/brain reserve and depression on regional atrophy in early Alzheimer’s disease
Introduction: Depression in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia of the Alzheimer’s type (AD) is associated with worse prognosis. Indeed, depressed MCI patients have worse cognitive performance and greater loss of gray-matter volume in several brain areas. To date, knowledge of the factors that can mitigate this detrimental effect is still limited. The aim of the present study was to understand in what way cognitive reserve/brain reserve and depression interact and are linked to regional atrophy in early stage AD.
Methods: Depression was evaluated with the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 in 90 patients with early AD, and a cutoff of ≥ 5 was used to separate depressed (n = 44) from non-depressed (n = 46) patients. Each group was further stratified into high/low cognitive reserve/brain reserve. Cognitive reserve was calculated using years of education as proxy, while normalized parenchymal volumes were used to estimate brain reserve. Voxel-based morphometry was carried out to extract and analyze gray-matter maps. 2 × 2 ANCOVAs were run to test the effect of the reserve-by-depression interaction on gray matter. Age and hippocampal ratio were used as covariates. Composite indices of major cognitive domains were also analyzed with comparable models.
Results: No reserve-by-depression interaction was found in the analytical models of gray matter. Depression was associated with less gray matter volume in the cerebellum and parahippocampal gyrus. The brain reserve-by-depression interaction was a significant predictor of executive functioning. Among those with high brain reserve, depressed patients had poorer executive skills. No significant results were found in association with cognitive reserve.
Conclusion: These findings suggest that brain reserve may modulate the association between neurodegeneration and depression in patients with MCI and dementia of the AD type, influencing in particular executive functioning
Field induced state and marginal stability of high-Tc superconductors
It is shown that the {\em complex} component is generated in d-wave
superconductor in the magnetic field. As one enters superconducting state at
finite field the normal to superconducting transition occurs into bulk
state . The driving force for the transition is the
linear coupling between magnetic field and non zero magnetization of the
condensate. The external magnetic field violates parity
and time reversal symmetries and the nodal quasiparticle states respond by
generating the component of the order parameter, with the magnitude
estimated to be on the order of few Kelvin. Parity (P) and time reversal (T)

Altered frontal and insular functional connectivity as pivotal mechanisms for apathy in Alzheimer’s disease
Background: Apathy is a common and early symptom in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and is linked to poorer prognosis. Theoretical interpretations of apathy implicate alterations of connections amongst fronto-striatal and limbic regions.
Objective: To test the association between presence of apathy and patterns of brain functional connectivity in patients with clinically-established AD.
Methods: Seventy AD patients were included. Thirty-five patients experienced apathy as defined by the screening question of the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, and thirty-five did not. All patients agreed to undergo an MRI protocol inclusive of resting-state acquisitions. The hemodynamic-dependent signal was extracted bilaterally from five regions of interest: ventromedial prefrontal cortices, anterior cingulate cortices, dorsolateral prefrontal cortices, insulae and amygdalae. t tests were run to compare connectivity maps of apathetic and non-apathetic patients. Age, education, Mini Mental State Examination score, gray matter volumes and gray matter fractions served as covariates.
Results: At a pFWE < 0.05 threshold, apathetic patients had reduced connectivity between the left insula and right superior parietal cortex. Apathetic patients had also increased connectivity between the right dorsolateral prefrontal seed and the right superior parietal cortex. Patients with apathy were significantly more likely to experience other psychiatric symptoms.
Conclusion: Our findings support a role of frontal and insular connections in coordinating value-based decisions in AD. Both down-regulation and maladaptive up-regulation mechanisms appear to be at play in these regions
Diatom beta-diversity in streams increases with spatial scale and decreases with nutrient enrichment across regional to sub-continental scales
Aim To quantify the relative contributions of local community assembly processes versus gamma-diversity to beta-diversity, and to assess how spatial scale and anthropogenic disturbance (i.e. nutrient enrichment) interact to dictate which driver dominates. Location France and the United States. Time period 1993-2011. Major taxa studied Freshwater stream diatoms. Methods beta-diversity along a nutrient enrichment gradient was examined across multiple spatial scales. beta-diversity was estimated using multi-site Sorensen dissimilarity. We assessed the relative importance of specialists versus generalists using Friedley coefficient, and the contribution of local community assembly versus gamma-diversity to beta-diversity across spatial scales, with a null model. Finally, we estimated the response of beta-diversity to environmental and spatial factors by testing the correlations between community, environmental and geographical distance matrices with partial Mantel tests. Results beta-diversity generally increased with spatial scale but the rate of increase depended on nutrient enrichment level. beta-diversity decreased significantly with increasing nutrient enrichment level due to the loss of specialist species. Local assembly was an important driver of beta-diversity especially under low nutrient enrichment. Significant partial Mantel correlations were observed between diatom beta-diversity and pure environmental distances under these conditions, highlighting the role of species sorting in local assembly processes. Conversely, in heavily enriched sites, only spatial distances were significantly correlated with beta-diversity, which indicated a substantial role of dispersal processes. Main conclusions Nutrient concentration mediated the expected increase in beta-diversity with spatial scales. Across spatial scales, beta-diversity was more influenced by local assembly processes rather than by gamma-diversity. Nutrient enrichment was associated with an overall decline in diatom beta-diversity and a shift in assembly processes from species sorting to dispersal, notably due to the elimination of some specialists and their subsequent replacement by generalists.Peer reviewe
Onset of Vortices in Thin Superconducting Strips and Wires
Spontaneous nucleation and the consequent penetration of vortices into thin
superconducting films and wires, subjected to a magnetic field, can be
considered as a nonlinear stage of primary instability of the current-carrying
superconducting state. The development of the instability leads to the
formation of a chain of vortices in strips and helicoidal vortex lines in
wires. The boundary of instability was obtained analytically. The nonlinear
stage was investigated by simulations of the time-dependent generalized

Time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations for mixed d- and s-wave superconductors
A set of coupled time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations (TDGL) for
superconductors of mixed d- and s-wave symmetry are derived microscopically
from the Gor'kov equations by using the analytical continuation technique. The
scattering effects due to impurities with both nonmagnetic and magnetic
interactions are considered. We find that the d- and s-wave components of the
order parameter can have very different relaxation times in the presence of
nonmagnetic impurities. This result is contrary to a set of phenomenologically
proposed TDGL equations and thus may lead to new physics in the dynamics of
