    In this work we attempt to establish the best time resolution attainable with a scintillation counter consisting of a plastic scintillator read out by a Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode. The measured time resolution is inversely proportional to the square root of the energy deposited in the scintillator, and scales to 18ps (sigma) at 1MeV. This result competes with the best ones reported for photomultiplier tubes.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figure

    We report on the design and commissioning of a new spectrometer for muon-spin relaxation/rotation studies installed at the Swiss Muon Source (Sμ\muS) of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland). This new instrument is essentially a new design and replaces the old general-purpose surface-muon instrument (GPS) which has been for long the workhorse of the μ\muSR user facility at PSI. By making use of muon and positron detectors made of plastic scintillators read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs), a time resolution of the complete instrument of about 160 ps (standard deviation) could be achieved. In addition, the absence of light guides, which are needed in traditionally built μ\muSR instrument to deliver the scintillation light to photomultiplier tubes located outside magnetic fields applied, allowed us to design a compact instrument with a detector set covering an increased solid angle compared to the old GPS.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

    Hunting dogs have probably a higher level of exposure to Neospora caninum Dubey, Carpenter, Speer, Topper et Uggla, 1988 and Toxoplasma gondii Nicolle et Manceaux, 1908 than other canine populations for their different lifestyle. The aim of our survey was to determine the seroprevalence of N. caninum and T. gondii in hunting dogs from southern Italy and assess risk factors related to these protozoan infections. Blood samples were collected from 398 hunting dogs (19 different breeds, aged from 5 month to 14 years). The sera were screened by indirect fluorescence antibody test; a titre ≥ 50 was considered positive. Antibodies to N. caninum and T. gondii were detected in 59 (15%) dogs with titres from 50 to 3 200 and in 94 (24%) dogs with titres from 50 to 1 600, respectively, with co-infection in 25 (6%) dogs. Statistical difference (p ≤ 0.05) was found only for infection with T. gondii between two age groups: ≥ 2-4 years (16%) and ≥ 4-7 years (33%); other observed characteristics were without statistical significance. Our results suggest that the hunting dogs could play an important role in the transmission cycle of N. caninum between wild animals and livestock. This is the first detection of antibodies to T. gondii in hunting dogs in Italy

    The article deals with phase transformations and austenitizing behavior of the X155CrMoV12 tool steel. Dilatation analyses of a series of samples were performed at various cooling rates, chosen in the range from 10 °C/s to 0,1°C/s. Acquired experimental data were used for evaluation of dilatometric curves in order to map the temperature ranges of phase transformations of the austenite to pearlite, bainite or martensite. All experimental samples from dilatometric analyses were then subjected to microstructural analyses and hardness measurements to characterize the microstructure and hardness for each tested heat treatment regime

    The article is a result of investigations which deals with the phase transformations of tool steel X155CrMoV12. The experimental data obtained was used to evaluate the resulting Continuous Cooling Transform (CCT) diagram, which consists of seven dilation curves. All experimental samples from dilatometric analyzes were then subjected to microstructural analyzes and hardness measurements to characterize the microstructure and hardness for each heat treatment mode tested. Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) microscopy was also used to study the carbides present in steels and their size and shape for all selected cooling modes

    A new technique for elucidating β\beta-decay schemes which involve daughter nuclei with very low energy excited states

    A new technique of elucidating β\beta-decay schemes of isotopes with large density of states at low excitation energies has been developed, in which a Broad Energy Germanium (BEGe) detector is used in conjunction with coaxial hyper-pure germanium detectors. The power of this technique has been demonstrated on the example of 183Hg decay. Mass-separated samples of 183Hg were produced by a deposition of the low-energy radioactive-ion beam delivered by the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The excellent energy resolution of the BEGe detector allowed γ\gamma rays energies to be determined with a precision of a few tens of electronvolts, which was sufficient for the analysis of the Rydberg-Ritz combinations in the level scheme. The timestamped structure of the data was used for unambiguous separation of γ\gamma rays arising from the decay of 183Hg from those due to the daughter decays
