The protective role of melatonin on L-arginine-induced acute pancreatitis in adult male albino rats

Background: Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disease that has an increasing incidence worldwide. AP is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates ranging 15–40% in its severe form. Oxidative stress plays an important role in pancreatic acinar cell injury in case of AP. Melatonin (Mel) is proven to have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of the work was to investigate the protective role of Mel against L-arginine (L-arg)-induced AP in adult male albino rats. Materials and methods: Thirty-six adult male albino rats were used in this study. Animals were divided into four groups; Control group (Group A; n = 6), Mel group (Group B; n = 6), L-arg group (Group C; n = 12) receiving two doses of L-arg injection with 1 h interval in-between, and L-arg+Mel group (Group D; n = 12) receiving Mel 1 h after each L-arg injection. 24 h after the second L-arg injection, the serum levels of amylase (AM), lipase (LP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumour necrotic factor-alpha (TNF-α) were determined. Then, pancreatic specimens were processed for histological and immunohistochemical staining with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and the area percentage of VEGF and collagen content were measured by digital image analysis. Results: Microscopic examination revealed that animals received L-arg only (Group C) showed loss of the pancreatic lobular architecture with marked fibrosis, acinar degeneration, inflammatory reaction and marked oedema with vascular congestion. Also, L-arg-induced AP caused a significant elevation of the serum levels of AM, LP, IL-6. All these histo-pathological and serological parameters were markedly improved by Mel administration. Conclusions: Melatonin exhibits strong therapeutic effects in the course of AP. Hence, the use of Mel as adjuvant treatment in AP is recommended.

Attentional bias toward negative and positive pictorial stimuli and its relationship with distorted cognitions, empathy, and moral reasoning among men with intellectual disabilities who have committed crimes

The aims of this study were to examine: (a) whether men with intellectual disabilities who have a history of criminal offending attend to affective pictorial stimuli in a biased manner, and (b) whether there is a relationship between an affective attentional bias and offence-supportive cognitions, empathy, and moral development. Forty-six men with intellectual disabilities who had a documented history of criminal offending, and 51 men who also had intellectual disabilities, but no such history, were recruited and asked to complete a computer-based dot-probe task using affective pictorial stimuli with randomisation, along with measures of distorted cognitions, empathy, and moral development. Those with a history of criminal offending endorsed significantly more offence-supportive cognitions, had significantly lower general empathy, and more “mature” moral development, as well as a significant attentional bias toward affective pictorial stimuli. Attentional bias significantly predicted offence-supportive cognitions, and vice versa, having controlled for offence history, and Full-Scale IQ, but this was not the case for empathy or moral development. While the findings require replication, interventions which aim to modify attention bias with this population should be tested

A layered surface acoustic wave gas sensor based on a polyaniline/In2O3 nanofibre composite

A polyaniline/In2O3 nanofibre composite based layered surface acoustic wave ( SAW) sensor has been developed and investigated for different gases. Chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of finely divided In2O3 was employed to synthesize a polyaniline nanofibre/In2O3 nanoparticle composite. The nanocomposite was deposited onto a layered ZnO/64 degrees YX LiNbO3 SAW transducer. The novel sensor was exposed to H-2, NO2 and CO gases. Fast response and recovery times with good repeatability were observed at room temperature

A polyaniline (PANI) nanofiber based surface acoustic wave (SAW) gas sensor, has been developed and investigated towards hydrogen (H2) gas. A template-free, rapidly-mixed reaction approach was employed to synthesize polyaniline nanofibers, which utilized chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) was used as the dopant acid in the synthesis of the polyaniline nanofibers. Polystyrene sulfonic acid (PSSA) was used to re-dope PANI nanofibers after dialyzing with ammonium hydroxide. Then PSSA doped nanofibers were deposited onto a ZnO/64 YX LiNbO3 SAW transducer. The sensor was exposed to various concentrations of H2 gas in an ambient of synthetic air, and operated at room temperature

Polyaniline (PANI) nanofiber and PANI/semi-conducting metal oxide nanofiber composites based layered surface acoustic wave (SAW) and conductometric sensors have been developed and investigated towards hydrogen (H2) gas. Chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline was employed to synthesize pure PANI nanofibers as well as PANI/semi-conducting metal oxide composites. The nano-materials were deposited onto layered ZnO/64deg YX LiNbO3 SAW and conductometric transducers. The novel sensors were exposed to H2 gas. Fast response and recovery with good repeatability were observed at room temperature
