    Effect of Auxins on Shoot and Root Growth in an Endangered Medicinal Plant Guggal [Commiphora wightii (Arnott.) Bhand.]

    An investigation was carried out to study the effect of IBA and NAA on vegetative propagation of guggal[Commiphora wightii (Arnott.) Bhand.] through cuttings, at Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari. The experiment consists of ten treatments: IBA, NAA and their combination, each at 2000, 4000 and 6000 mg l-1along with control, replicated thrice. Ten cuttings per each treatment and per replication were planted. Planting media used were: sand, soil and vermicompost, in 2:1:1 ratio. Cuttings were dipped for five minutes in solutions of IBA, NAA and their combinations. Cuttings treated with 4000 mg l-1 IBA proved to be the best for shoot and root responses, viz., days taken to first sprouting (11.67 days), number of shoots per cutting (10.27), number of leaves in the longest shoot (44.07), length of longest shoot (51.69cm), diameter of the longest shoot (4.40mm), rooting percentage (61.19), number of primary roots per cutting (15.01), length of the longest primary root (26.36cm), and number of secondary roots (22.37) and length of the longest secondary root (21.40cm) per cutting. It was concluded that IBA @ 4000 mg l-1 was most effective for obtaining maximum shoot and root growth

    Awareness of lifestyle modification in females diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome in India: explorative study

    Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) adversely affect women at varying stages of their life and imperative to emphasis on prevention strategies since incidence of PCOS is on the rise. Study aims to explore perception on PCOS, awareness on life style modification, emotional attributes, concern regarding PCOS and utilization of physiotherapy services.Methods: The study was conducted in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, India. Self-made validated questionnaire was administered. Descriptive analysis was done. Perception on PCOS, lifestyle modification, emotional attribution and biggest concern were calculated as absolute frequencies and were reported as overall percentages. Chi square test was applied on the demographic factor’s influence on level of awareness.Results: 21% of the respondents are very well aware about PCOS. 51% reported as doctor was their main source of information about PCOS. 81% expressed that PCOS is manageable one. 62% aware that exercise helps in the management of PCOS. Out of this, 39% are doing exercise on a regular basis. However all the study participants reported, they have not had any consultation from physiotherapist for their structured exercise program.32% attributed to anxiety after the diagnosis of PCOS. 64% of the respondents aware that changing in diet or eating habits can influence in PCOS. However 95% of the subjects concurred to follow life style modification.Conclusions: Efforts need to intensify in creating awareness on the general public about PCOS. Absolute majority of the study participant uncoerced to follow lifestyle modification however emphasis needs to address on multidisciplinary approach in managing PCOS

    Study of Water Storage in Existing and Predicted Small Dams on Gadhi and Kasardi Rivers of Panvel Tahsil

    Water is an important natural component on the earth. We can’t survive without water. Therefore, it is necessary to conserve and use it properly. Panvel tahsil of Raigad district in Maharashtra receives a lot of rainfall during the monsoons, while the rural areas experience severe water scarcity during the summer. To overcome the water scarcity in the rural areas of Panvel tahsil, this research has been done to build small dams on the Gadhi and Karsardi rivers. For these ten sites have been inspected for construction of small dams on Gadhi and Kasardi rivers. At present, Chota Morbe and Gadheswar are two dams constructed on the Gadhi River. These dams supply 3,40,956 cubic meters of water to Panvel City and rural areas. When small dams have been constructed at the planned site, the water storage will increase to 6,80,052 cubic meters. If Small dams constructed on the Gadhi and Kasardi rivers, water would percolate under the ground and water supply will be available to the farmers in winter and summer season also. Due to increases in the water level, Borewells that supply water to villages will also have plenty of water till the summer season which will eradicate the scarcity of water

    [2.2]Paracyclophane (PCP) is a prevalent scaffold that is widely utilized in asymmetric synthesis, p-stacked polymers, energy materials, and functional parylene coatings that finds broad applications in bioand materials science. In the last few years, [2.2]paracyclophane chemistry has progressed tremendously, enabling the fine-tuning of ist structural and functional properties. This Minireview highlights the most important recent synthetic developments in the selective functionalization of PCP that govern distinct features of planar chirality as well as chiroptical and optoelectronic properties. Special focus is given to the function-inspired design of [2.2]paracyclophane-based pstacked conjugated materials by transition-metal-catalyzed crosscoupling reactions. Current synthetic challenges, limitations, as well as future research directions and new avenues for advancing cyclophane chemistry are also summarized

    The detection of variability from the candidate IR counterpart to the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1E1048.1-5937

    We report on the detection of variability from the proposed IR counterpart to the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar (AXP) 1E1048.1-5937 based on Chandra and ESO optical/IR deep observations carried out in 2001-2002. Within the narrow Chandra uncertainty region for 1E1048.1-5937 we found only one relatively faint (J=22.1+/-0.3, J-Ks=2.4) source, while the recently proposed IR counterpart was not detected down to a limiting Ks magnitude of about 20.7 (3sigma confidence level). This implies a remarkable IR brightening of this object, Delta Ks>1.3, on a timescale of about 50 days. Although our knowledge of the IR properties of AXPs is rather limited (there is only another source, 1E2259+586, for which IR variability has been detected), the observed IR variability of the proposed counterpart strengthens its association with 1E1048.1-5937. Our results make the IR (and presumably optical) variability a likely common characteristic of AXPs, and provide new constraints on this class of objects.Comment: 4 pages.     Water vapor release from biofuel combustion

    International audienceWe report on the emission of water vapor from biofuel combustion. Concurrent measurements of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are used to scale the concentrations of water vapor found, and are compared to carbon in the biofuel. Fuel types included hardwood (oak and African musasa), softwood (pine and spruce, partly with green needles), and African savanna grass. The session-averaged ratio of H2O to the sum of CO and CO2 in the emissions from 16 combustion experiments ranged from 1.2 to 3.7 on average, indicating the presence of water that is not chemically bound. This biofuel moisture content ranged from 33% in the dry African hardwood, musasa, to 220% in fresh pine branches with needles. The moisture content from fresh biofuel contributes distinctly to the water vapor in biomass burning emissions, and its influence on meteorology needs to be evaluated

    The importance of appearing trustworthy in the workplace: Performance analysts’ perspectives

    The discipline of performance analysis is founded upon the collection and analysis of objective and reliable data to support the coaching process. While research has begun to identify the potential importance of trust in applied sporting environments, there remains a paucity of inquiry that seeks to explicitly investigate trustworthiness in the work of performance analysts. To redress this situation Jisc online survey data was collected from performance analysts (n = 88, age: 37 ± 11 years, experience: 8 ± 6 years) practising across sporting contexts and geographic areas. Findings showed that: (1) appearing trustworthy to a range of working others was an important goal for performance analysts, (2) trustworthiness was considered essential for building positive working relationships, respect and perceptions of role-related competence (3) being perceived as trustworthy can generate desirable as well as help to avoid undesirable working conditions, including career progression and employment security, (4) analysts often seek to influence others perceptions of their trustworthiness by demonstrating important characteristics such as technical and tactical knowledge, being friendly and approachable, being punctual and hardworking, and evidenced-based, (5) an important facet of this was, often in conjunction with the coaching staff, concealing known information, particularly to athletes regarding poor performance to avoid psychological damage or where the data did not fit the coach’s approach, and (6) most performance analysts suggested the professional preparation and development of performance analysts needs to place greater emphasis on facilitating social sensibilities that practitioners can use to enhance perceptions about their workplace trustworthiness. The findings of this study generate new knowledge regarding the social features of performance analysis work, thus contributing to a growing critical social analysis of sport work in performance environments, as well as raising important practical implications for those responsible for educating the performance analysis workforce
