    Efficacy of Two Common Methods of Application of Residual Insecticide for Controlling the Asian Tiger Mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse), in Urban Areas

    After its first introduction in the 1980's the Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse), has spread throughout Southern Europe. Ae. albopictus is considered an epidemiologically important vector for the transmission of many viral pathogens such as the yellow fever virus, dengue fever and Chikungunya fever, as well as several filarial nematodes such as Dirofilaria immitis or D. repens. It is therefore crucial to develop measures to reduce the risks of disease transmission by controlling the vector populations. The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy of two application techniques (mist vs. stretcher sprayer) and two insecticides (Etox based on the nonester pyrethroid Etofenprox vs. Microsin based on the pyrethroid type II Cypermetrin) in controlling adult tiger mosquito populations in highly populated areas. To test the effect of the two treatments pre- and post-treatment human landing rate counts were conducted for two years. After one day from the treatment we observed a 100% population decrease in mosquito abundance with both application methods and both insecticides. However, seven and 14 days after the application the stretcher sprayer showed larger population reductions than the mist sprayer. No effect of insecticide type after one day and 14 days was found, while Etox caused slightly higher population reduction than Microsin after seven days. Emergency measures to locally reduce the vector populations should adopt adulticide treatments using stretcher sprayers. However, more research is still needed to evaluate the potential negative effects of adulticide applications on non-target organisms

    El estrés oxidativo y la hipertensión arterial juegan un rol muy importante en las enfermedades crónicas. Una alternativa para obtener péptidos con propiedades antioxidantes y antihipertensivas naturales es la hidrólisis enzimática de proteínas. El objetivo de este trabajo fue obtener fracciones de hidrolizados proteicos de concentrado de hemoglobina bovina (CHB) con propiedades antioxidantes y antihipertensivas concentradas. Se prepararon 4 hidrolizados a partir del CHB usando diferentes proteasas que fueron fraccionados por ultrafiltración (corte 5kDa). A las fracciones ultra-filtradas se les determinó la capacidad antioxidante (inhibición del radical ABTS+) y sus propiedades antihipertensivas (inhibición de ECA I). La hidrólisis enzimática incrementó la capacidad antioxidante y actividad antihipertensiva del CHB. El proceso de ultrafiltración permitió concentrar la actividad antioxidante de los diferentes hidrolizados proteicos. Sin embargo, para el caso de la actividad antihipertensiva no hubo diferencias importantes que justifiquen el empleo de dicho proceso (p < 0,05)

    Nonlinear statistical effects in relativistic mean field theory

    We investigate the relativistic mean field theory of nuclear matter at finite temperature and baryon density taking into account of nonlinear statistical effects, characterized by power-law quantum distributions. The analysis is performed by requiring the Gibbs conditions on the global conservation of baryon number and electric charge fraction. We show that such nonlinear statistical effects play a crucial role in the equation of state and in the formation of mixed phase also for small deviations from the standard Boltzmann-Gibbs statistics.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1005.4643 and arXiv:0912.460

    A burst search for gravitational waves from binary black holes

    Compact binary coalescence (CBC) is one of the most promising sources of gravitational waves. These sources are usually searched for with matched filters which require accurate calculation of the GW waveforms and generation of large template banks. We present a complementary search technique based on algorithms used in un-modeled searches. Initially designed for detection of un-modeled bursts, which can span a very large set of waveform morphologies, the search algorithm presented here is constrained for targeted detection of the smaller subset of CBC signals. The constraint is based on the assumption of elliptical polarisation for signals received at the detector. We expect that the algorithm is sensitive to CBC signals in a wide range of masses, mass ratios, and spin parameters. In preparation for the analysis of data from the fifth LIGO-Virgo science run (S5), we performed preliminary studies of the algorithm on test data. We present the sensitivity of the search to different types of simulated CBC waveforms.     \u2013 OBJECTIVE: Probiotics S. salivarius 24SMBc and S. oralis 89a comprised in the nasal spray Rinogermina are known to exert inhibition of harmful pathogens and ameliorate the outcome of patients with chronic upper airways infections. In this study, for the first time, the effect of this formulation on the modulation of the microflora of healthy subjects was evaluated, with particular interest on pathobionts and pathogens present. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Metagenomic identification and quantification of bacterial abundances in healthy subjects were carried out by means of Ion Torrent Personal Machine. In particular, nasal swabs were sampled one, two and four weeks after seven days of treatment with Rinogermina. RESULTS: The modulation of the abundance of pathobionts and pathogenic species (i.e., Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Prevotella denticola, Prevotella melaninogenica, Rothia dentocariosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pseudopneumoniae) was characterized and a significant temporary decrease in their presence was identified. CONCLUSIONS: The beneficial effects of S. salivarius 24SMBc and S. oralis 89a nasal intake was assessed but seemed to be restricted in specific temporal windows. Thus it would be interesting to evaluate also this positive impact of longer administration of this probiotic formulation

    Strange Exotic States and Compact Stars

    We discuss the possible appearance of strange exotic multi-quark states in the interior of neutron stars and signals for the existence of strange quark matter in the core of compact stars. We show how the in-medium properties of possible pentaquark states are constrained by pulsar mass measurements.     EUV jets, type III radio bursts and sunspot waves investigated using SDO/AIA observations

    Images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) at 211A are used to identify the solar source of the type III radio bursts seen in WIND/WAVES dynamic spectra. We analyse a 2.5 hour period during which six strong bursts are seen. The radio bursts correlate very well with the EUV jets coming from the western side of a sunspot in AR11092. The EUV jet emission also correlates well with brightening at what looks like their footpoint at the edge of the umbra. For 10-15 min after strong EUV jets are ejected, the footpoint brightens at roughly 3 min intervals. In both the EUV images and the extracted light curves, it looks as though the brightening is related to the 3-min sunspot oscillations, although the correlation coefficient is rather low. The only open field near the jets is rooted in the sunspot. We conclude that active region EUV/X-ray jets and interplanetary electron streams originate on the edge of the sunspot umbra. They form along a current sheet between the sunspot open field and closed field connecting to underlying satellite flux. Sunspot running penumbral waves cause roughly 3-min jet footpoint brightening.
