    Equipping Children and Pre–Teens to Read and Study Their Bibles

    There is a shortage of material which teaches children and pre–teens how to read and study the Bible. It is important for educators to help them become good Bible readers and interpreters. This paper presents five crucial steps that are important to instruct children and pre–teens in the skills necessary to work out the appropriate meaning and application of the Biblical text. Because children and adolescents learn by “doing,” this article suggests core activities to help them understand and develop Bible interpretation skills

    Three months journeying of a Hawaiian monk seal

    Hawaiian monk seals (Monachus schauinslandi) are endemic to the Hawaiian Islands and are the most endangered species of marine mammal that lives entirely within the jurisdiction of the United States. The species numbers around 1300 and has been declining owing, among other things, to poor juvenile survival which is evidently related to poor foraging success. Consequently, data have been collected recently on the foraging habitats, movements, and behaviors of monk seals throughout the Northwestern and main Hawaiian Islands. Our work here is directed to exploring a data set located in a relatively shallow offshore submerged bank (Penguin Bank) in our search of a model for a seal's journey. The work ends by fitting a stochastic differential equation (SDE) that mimics some aspects of the behavior of seals by working with location data collected for one seal. The SDE is found by developing a time varying potential function with two points of attraction. The times of location are irregularly spaced and not close together geographically, leading to some difficulties of interpretation. Synthetic plots generated using the model are employed to assess its reasonableness spatially and temporally. One aspect is that the animal stays mainly southwest of Molokai.     An integrative model of emotional intelligence: emotional ability as a moderator of the mediated relationship of emotional quotient and emotional competence

    The purpose of this paper is to propose a new theoretical and empirical model of emotional intelligence (EI) that incorporates the dominant paradigms in the field today – Bar-On (1988) emotional quotient (EQ), Mayer and Salovey (1990) emotional ability, and Goleman (1995) emotional competence – using a moderated-mediation framework. The paper proposes that emotional ability (potential capacity) has a moderating effect on the mediated relationship of EQ (preferred patterns) and emotional competence (actual behaviors) on performance outcomes. The proposal potentially resolves the content domain and nomological network concerns by incorporating the three paradigms into an integrative model of EI

    Fostering Emotional and Social Intelligence in Organizations

    This paper integrates diverse research to provide a theoretical model of the process whereby emotional and social intelligence (ESI) is fostered in organizations. The purpose of this paper is to provide: (1) an overview of the theory of ESI, including the historical contributions and current conceptualizations; (2) the impact of ESI on performance, including the research evidence and examples of organizations using ESI; (3) developing ESI competencies and a model for desirable, sustainable change; and (4) a call to action for education and management, including guidelines for fostering ESI in organizations. Unlike general intelligence or personality, the key assumption and rationale for the current paper is that ESI can be developed. Increasing ESI competences through the learning process can guide program design, implementation, and measurement for scholars and practitioners. Research has demonstrated that ESI competencies may be developed through a process of desirable, sustainable change called Intentional Change Theory (ICT)
