    Gene Expressio Array Exploration Using K-Formal Concept Analysis

    Proceeding of: 9th International Conference, ICFCA 2011, Nicosia, Cyprus, May 2-6, 2011.DNA micro-arrays are a mechanism for eliciting gene expression values, the concentration of the transcription products of a set of genes, under different chemical conditions. The phenomena of interest—up-regulation, down-regulation and co-regulation—are hypothesized to stem from the functional relationships among transcription products. In [1,2,3] a generalisation of Formal Concept Analysis was developed with data mining applications in mind, K-Formal Concept Analysis, where incidences take values in certain kinds of semirings, instead of the usual Boolean carrier set. In this paper, we use (Rmin+)- and (Rmax+) to analyse gene expression data for Arabidopsis thaliana.     M3Fusion: A Deep Learning Architecture for Multi-{Scale/Modal/Temporal} satellite data fusion

    Modern Earth Observation systems provide sensing data at different temporal and spatial resolutions. Among optical sensors, today the Sentinel-2 program supplies high-resolution temporal (every 5 days) and high spatial resolution (10m) images that can be useful to monitor land cover dynamics. On the other hand, Very High Spatial Resolution images (VHSR) are still an essential tool to figure out land cover mapping characterized by fine spatial patterns. Understand how to efficiently leverage these complementary sources of information together to deal with land cover mapping is still challenging. With the aim to tackle land cover mapping through the fusion of multi-temporal High Spatial Resolution and Very High Spatial Resolution satellite images, we propose an End-to-End Deep Learning framework, named M3Fusion, able to leverage simultaneously the temporal knowledge contained in time series data as well as the fine spatial information available in VHSR information. Experiments carried out on the Reunion Island study area asses the quality of our proposal considering both quantitative and qualitative aspects

    Electrical control of single-photon emission in highly-charged individual colloidal quantum dots

    Electron transfer to an individual quantum dot promotes the formation of charged excitons with enhanced recombination pathways and reduced lifetimes. Excitons with only one or two extra charges have allowed for the development of very efficient quantum dot lasing [1] and the understanding of blinking dynamics [2], while charge transfer management has yielded single quantum dot LEDs [3], LEDs with reduced efficiency roll-off [4], and enabled studies of carrier and spin dynamics [5]. Here, by room-temperature time-resolved experiments on individual giant-shell CdSe/CdS quantum dots, we show the electrochemical formation of highly charged excitons containing more than twelve electrons and one hole. We report control of intensity blinking, as well as a deterministic manipulation of quantum dot photodynamics, with an observed 210-fold increase of the decay rate, accompanied by 12-fold decrease of the emission intensity, all while preserving single-photon emission characteristics. These results pave the way for deterministic control over the charge state, and room-temperature decay-rate engineering for colloidal quantum dot-based classical and quantum communication technologies

    Oral Bromelain Attenuates Inflammation in an Ovalbumin-induced Murine Model of Asthma

    Bromelain, a widely used pineapple extract with cysteine protease activity, has been shown to have immunomodulatory effects in a variety of immune system models. The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of orally administered bromelain in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced murine model of acute allergic airway disease (AAD). To establish AAD, female C57BL/6J mice were sensitized with intraperitoneal (i.p.) OVA/alum and then challenged with OVA aerosols for 3 days. Mice were gavaged with either (phosphate buffered saline)PBS or 200 mg/kg bromelain in PBS, twice daily for four consecutive days, beginning 1 day prior to OVA aerosol challenge. Airway reactivity and methacholine sensitivity, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cellular differential, Th2 cytokines IL-5 and IL-13, and lung histology were compared between treatment groups. Oral bromelain-treatment of AAD mice demonstrated therapeutic efficacy as evidenced by decreased methacholine sensitivity (P ≤ 0.01), reduction in BAL eosinophils (P ≤ 0.02) and IL-13 concentrations (P ≤ 0.04) as compared with PBS controls. In addition, oral bromelain significantly reduced BAL CD19+ B cells (P ≤ 0.0001) and CD8+ T cells (P ≤ 0.0001) in AAD mice when compared with controls. These results suggest that oral treatment with bromelain had a beneficial therapeutic effect in this murine model of asthma and bromelain may also be effective in human conditions

    Stool microRNA profiles reflect different dietary and gut microbiome patterns in healthy individuals

    Objectives MicroRNA (miRNA) profiles have been evaluated in several biospecimens in relation to common diseases for which diet may have a considerable impact. We aimed at characterising how specific diets are associated with the miRNome in stool of vegans, vegetarians and omnivores and how this is reflected in the gut microbial composition, as this is still poorly explored. Design We performed small RNA and shotgun metagenomic sequencing in faecal samples and dietary recording from 120 healthy volunteers, equally distributed for the different diets and matched for sex and age. Results We found 49 miRNAs differentially expressed among vegans, vegetarians and omnivores (adj. p 0.22, adj. p <0.05) with the estimated intake of nutrients, particularly animal proteins, phosphorus and, interestingly, lipids. In omnivores, higher Prevotella and Roseburia and lower Bacteroides abundances than in vegans and vegetarians were observed. Lipid metabolism-related miR-425-3p and miR-638 expression levels were associated with increased abundances of microbial species, such as Roseburia sp. CAG 182 and Akkermansia muciniphila, specific of different diets. An integrated analysis identified 25 miRNAs, 25 taxa and 7 dietary nutrients that clearly discriminated (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve=0.89) the three diets. Conclusion Stool miRNA profiles are associated with specific diets and support the role of lipids as a driver of epigenetic changes and host-microbial molecular interactions in the gut
