    Half-lives of rp-process waiting point nuclei

    We give results of microscopic calculations for the half-lives of various proton-rich nuclei in the mass region A=60-90, which are involved in the astrophysical rp-process, and which are needed as input parameters of numerical simulations in Nuclear Astrophysics. The microscopic formalism consists of a deformed QRPA approach that involves a selfconsistent quasiparticle deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock basis and residual spin-isospin separable forces in both the particle-hole and particle-particle channels. The strength of the particle-hole residual interaction is chosen to be consistent with the Skyrme effective force and mean field basis, while that of the particle-particle is globally fixed to 0.07 MeV after a judicious choice from comparison to experimental half-lives. We study and discuss the sensitivity of the half-lives to deformation and residual interactions.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Eur. Phys. J.

    Deformed two center shell model

    A highly specialized two-center shell model has been developed accounting for the splitting of a deformed parent nucleus into two ellipsoidaly deformed fragments. The potential is based on deformed oscillator wells in direct correspondance with the shape change of the nuclear system. For the first time a potential responsible for the necking part between the fragments is introduced on potential theory basis. As a direct consequence, spin-orbit {\bf ls} and {\bf l2^2} operators are calculated as shape dependent. Level scheme evolution along the fission path for pairs of ellipsoidaly deformed fragments is calculated. The Strutinsky method yields the shell corrections for different mass asymmetries from the superheavy nucleus 306^{306}122 and 252^{252}Cf all along the splitting process.Comment: 32 pages, 8 figure

    Generalized Sagnac Effect

    Experiments were conducted to study light propagation in a light waveguide loop consisting of linearly and circularly moving segments. We found that any segment of the loop contributes to the total phase difference between two counterpropagating light beams in the loop. The contribution is proportional to a product of the moving velocity v and the projection of the segment length Deltal on the moving direction, Deltaphi=4pivDeltal/clambda. It is independent of the type of motion and the refractive index of waveguides. The finding includes the Sagnac effect of rotation as a special case and suggests a new fiber optic sensor for measuring linear motion with nanoscale sensitivity.Comment: 3 pages (including 3 figures

    Hepatitis Associated with a Sarcocystis canis–like Protozoan in a Hawaiian Monk Seal (Monachus schauinslandi)

    A Hawaiian monk seal (Monachus schauinslandi) died in captivity at the National Marine Fisheries Service, Kewalo Basin Facility in Honolulu, Hawaii. The animal was icteric, and the liver was friable. Microscopic lesions were detected in the colon and liver. Colonic lesions included multifocal, necrohemorrhagic colitis associated with gram-negative bacilli. The liver lesions included random hepatic necrosis and cholestasis. Asexual stages of a Sarcocystis canis–like apicomplexan were detected in hepatocytes. The parasite divided by endopolygeny. Merozoites occasionally formed rosettes around a central residual body. Ultrastructurally, merozoites lacked rhoptries. This is the first report of S. canis infection in M. schauinslandi, which is an endangered pinniped in U.S. waters

    Stereo-EEG exploration in the insula/operculum in paediatric patients with refractory epilepsy

    PURPOSE: Failure to recognise involvement of the insula / opercula (I/O) region is associated with poor outcome in epilepsy surgery. Recognition is challenging due to high connectivity with adjacent structures resulting in variable and misleading semiology, often subjective and therefore likely to be underreported by children. In this study we explored prevalence and characteristics of I/O involvement in paediatric patients undergoing sEEG exploration. METHOD: We retrospectively included all consecutive patients undergoing sEEG at our centre between 11/2014 and 01/2018 with at least three contacts within I/O and excluded those with undetermined seizure onset zone (SOZ) by sEEG. We divided patients into three groups: 1) SOZ in I/O, 2) spread to I/O and 3) no I/O involvement. We compared pre-invasive characteristics, sEEG results, surgery and outcome for each group. RESULTS: 29 of all 53 consecutive patients had an identified SOZ by sEEG and at least three contacts within the I/O and were included. 41% had I/O SOZ, 38% had I/O spread and 21% had no I/O involvement. Insula associated symptoms described in adult literature were not statistically different between the three groups. Complications due to sEEG were low (2 of 53 patients). Following I/O surgery, 63% were seizure free while an additional 26% of patients achieved seizure reduction. Postoperative deficits were seen in 75% of the patients but completely resolved in all but one patient. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest an important role of the I/O region with frequent onset or propagation to the I/O region (at least 64% of all 53 sEEG cases). Semiology appears less specific than in adults. Insula depth electrode insertion is safe with subsequent good surgical outcomes albeit common transient deficits

    Dual equivalence in models with higher-order derivatives

    We introduce a class of higher-order derivative models in (2,1) space-time dimensions. The models are described by a vector field, and contain a Proca-like mass term which prevents gauge invariance. We use the gauge embedding procedure to generate another class of higher-order derivative models, gauge-invariant and dual to the former class. We show that the results are valid in arbitrary (d,1) space-time dimensions when one discards the Chern-Simons and Chern-Simons-like terms. We also investigate duality at the quantum level, and we show that it is preserved in the quantum scenario. Other results include investigations concerning the gauge embedding approach when the vector field couples with fermionic matter, and when one adds nonlinearity.Comment: RevTex4, 14 pages; new version includes duality at the quantum level, and new references.
